When you go to rescue the elven alienage's leader as well as others.... if you beat the mage and you tell him that you should leave him to the elves... he tells you that he'll increase your health significantly by using up the lives of the elves in the cages..... you will get negative rep from Leliana first of all (about 18, somewhere in that range) and it's only +1 to your constitution.  Also the store in the alienage did not open for business afterwards.

However, if you decline his offer and finish him off, not only are you doing the "good thing".... you get to loot him for some decent stuff to either use or sell, get to whoop that cocky mofos a**... but the store owner will sell you items which included for me, a book that gave me +1 to my attributes (which I added to constitution anyway) as well as a point to spend on a skill.. and it only cost somewhere between 12-18 gold.. not to mention for some he may or may not sell extra backpack space (for me he didn't, but I believe it's random for most people as to where they get it other than a few spots... for example I found backpack upgrades from merchants my friends didn't and vice versa).

Plot timeline SPOILER:

I haven't seen anything here on it, so I figured I'd share that with everyone.  And if you are reading this, as a mage I didn't get to enter the alienage until partway through the landsmeet mission going towards the end of the game.

It's a pretty terrible awful. +1 Constitution and + Morrigan influence, while losing influence with others and the loot/XP from killing him. I didn't know about the shop, so that's even more against it.

Heck, I took the middle road my most recent run and spared his life for surrendering, which nets you nothing at all. My Warrior's a nice guy like that.

I took his offer on my dwarven rogue and hoped to see a "Thank you, now die (Attack)" option, but alas...

I always wondered how much health increase you get by accepting his offer. I didn't check it in my first playthrough though. I just accepted because I wanted to be evil. But since there's no really good or evil in this game, just "profit", and now that I know it's only +1 to con which can be aquired in a more profitable way by killing him, my Blood Mage will kick his ass

You can also just let him go, which I did. My character generally never killed anyone unless it was totally necessary.

You let a blood mage that has no regret about sacrificing and enslaving people go?

I suppose I judged him to be beyond redemption.

My character didn't kill Loghian or Jowan or dozens of other people, but the Tevinter blood mage slaver? Yeah, he died.

There's a store in the alienage?

The Tevinter Blood Mage slaver guy is one of the few guys you can't really justify letting live. At least the other characters try and at least pretend to be sorry for what they did, and cast doubt as to whether they are lying or not, but him, you know he's a mofo and his offer right from the start lets you know that the guy is not only beyond redemption but that letting him live will probably cause more death later, and so you're obligated when playing nice merciful characters to gut him like a pig...

From an RP standpoint, I felt that it wasn't the place of the Grey Wardens to possibly start an international incident with the mages of Tevinter when I had already accomplished my goal of freeing the elves and getting the evidence I needed.

I always kill him. Avernus too, as well as that female blood mage in the Circle Tower.

I never killed the blood mage female in the circle, or the desire demon milking the Templar. I sort of hoped something would come of it.

Anytime I see (Kill) as a dialogue choice I pick that one. It offers the most satisfaction.

I made the guy a counter offer, leave all your money and the slaves and you can live. He refused the offer so, I declined to let him re-negotiate.

Yes, there is, but it only opens up after you resolve the slaver issue.

You can allow him to live. If you spare his life he gives you increased health from Blood Magic. I don't know if your overall health pool is increased but when your about to slay him he offers this deal. I did accept his deal, and granted me a nice bonus. But in my defense I was a Blood Mage.

My char wouldn't let him get away with the slaves, but wouldn't necessarily have killed him if there had been an option to let him stay alive but leave the slaves behind. From memory he just attacks again after you say you won't let him take the slaves, so he had to die.

I don't think simply killing that guy would have had the slightest impact on the overall slave trade

He tried to kill me! He dies! (both with my do-gooder human noble paladin and my mean killer city elf Rogue which of course had his dad in there!)

The slavers are one of the few groups where my character never shows any mercy. But she is a City Elf. And that mage did just try to win her over by offering to sacrifice her daddy.

I simply let him go after fighting him. Needless to say, he has to leave everything - money, elves and the letter.
It's a matter of traditions, and he's not to blame that slavery is still used in his country. Aside from that, he does have an official okey-dokey from Loghain, so his operations in Ferelden are sanctioned. It's Loghain who's to blame in this case.
Besides, that Caladrius guy is really amusing.

Then again, I always play as a mage, so I tend to show mercy to fellow mages, if I can. I understand that a city elf will, most likely, have no doubts about killing him.

Not at all. If you defeat him, you can tell him to run and leave everything (i.e. elves, money and letter). He simply says it's very generous of you, considering the circumstances, and leaves.

You need to have very high persuasion/cunning to pull that off.
