This post is for future reference.
So I've been thinking about taking the plunge and going for a gold run with my buddies. My highest class is a lvl17 asari adept with a phalanx IV, fully upgraded stasis bubble and throw. I've got plenty of cobra missiles, thermal clip packs, and ops survival packs.

So I'm asking advice for those who have completed gold/silver. What should we bring along and what do we need to know? Am I even ready for that matter? Should I wait till i'm lvl20?

Asari with stasis is a good start. Another good thing to have is an infiltrator in order get have someone to cloak and revive.

Full team with all the stuff you have(medigel and what not)

Someone who is good at taking out each type of defense(Armor, barrier,Shield)

Ammo types like armor piecricing help a lot( Insta kill guardians which can overwhelm you) as well as helping with turrets and mechs

Knowing the map and your strategy for objectives

Knowing your team and having some past knowledge of their play style

And most importantly...Bring a turian sentinel.

make sure everyone has microphones and always stick together as a team.

Make sure you have an infiltrator as a medic.

Stasis the crap out of every phantom you see.

Use your shield boosters when in trouble (you have no idea how many people i see forget they even have the things)

A skilled team that can work well together is basically the key to beating gold.

If you're the one bringing the Asari Adept, it sounds like you have the core abilities for it. Having Warp up to level 4 where you can upgrade the Biotic explosion damage helps a lot against Turrets and Atlases.

For the mission consumables, you can only use two of each per mission no matter how many you have stockpiled. In the case of the Cobras, save them for timed portions where the Atlas is either the objective, or is blocking the objective.

Do not be afraid to make a tactical retreat. The enemies all have variable movement speeds; if a swarm of Phantoms appears, fall back so you're not under fire from their allies while trying to take them out. The worst thing that can happen in Gold (heck in any difficulty) is for you to get flanked.

You need a full team of high-caliber individuals. Low-level characters won't do much. Also, communication is key. If you don't have a mic and can't communicate, things may not go too well.

As other's have said work with a good and balanced team.

Make sure your team rations its medigel and cobra missiles. You really should try and save them all for the last two waves.

Make sure your team can tactically hold down a position together.

Make sure all your teammates are using their highest level characters. They should try and focus on class setups that allow them to quickly drop an enemy's shields.

I beat Gold on both maps with a team composed of Salarian Infiltrators only, and it worked perfectly. Captain Kirrahe would be proud.

This, I played with a team of randoms with no mics and killed gold, people just need to know what they are doing.

You definitely need an aggressor that can draw a lot of fire. Vanguard is a must for me. I beat gold already and I can confidently say you do need someone to draw lots of fire! Especially with the turrets, atlas, and phantoms!

Also, an infiltrator for objective missions and revives

I'd say you cannot do this without teamwork. And anyone who says "they got lucky" or they "killed gold" with a random team is obviously lying. This is truly a challenging difficulty and very fun!

Obviously, because its impossible for four people who know how to play meet on quick match right.

My all-infiltrator team, for one, played entirely on defensive, always digging in around the extraction area. I think it works better than a mixed team, since everybody can use tactical cloak, which is extremely useful and I'm sure we wouldn't have won without it (really useful for reviving a teammate in the middle of a horde of enemies). Playing aggressively, with classes like Vanguard and Soldier, is a lot harder since you'll always end up taking a lot of damage and our defenses are pretty poor on Gold difficulty.

So that's my advice: form a team of Salarian Infiltrators only and make the extraction area your fortress. Save missiles for as long as you can, using them as a last resort only. Use tactical cloak every time you have to revive a teammate under fire or completing objectives like (de)activating the four terminals. If your fortress on the extraction area is compromised, tell everyone to use tactical cloak and move to another position, but returning later. Engineers can repair the Atlas, so make them a special target just like the Phantom and the Nemesis.

You're tactics are obviously different from mine but I didn't have it hard at all. My 200% power recharge rate let's me use biotic charge(← recharges 100% of shields) almost instantly. I lead the guys away and the infiltrators/soldier take it out with ease. I died maybe once and that was because a bug(didn't let me charge even after it cooled down)!
Truth is, you'll have to find something you're good at and find a team that would effectively use your skills.
