This feature request is to have the website send a refresh message to browsers for pages that have updated content.  Sorry if that's a bit vague, my web development knowledge is embarrasingly lacking.

For example, if I open a forum tab, leave and then get back to it ten minutes later, I should see the threads that were posted in that time I was away from my computer. I'm certain that other forum systems have this feature, possibly even the old BioBoards, so it must be possible somehow.

This feature should apply to at least:

Home page - Recent Activity list
Forums pages (thread listings as well as thread contents)
Group discussions pages

I sporadically browse the Social Site while compiling at work, so sometimes I'll have a thread open for half an hour or more when I return to work. It is a nusiance to have to remember to refresh a topic to see updates.

face book does it, but I don't think anything else does. Also, it would probably be a massive bandwith lag, since your computer would have to be constantly communicating with their server.

And lastly, this is one of those things where if they havn't already done it, there is probably a good reason for it.

I wouldn't want that anyway. I don't want to go to the bathroom and come back and have to go looking for that interesting looking thread title I saw...

Reall the refresh button at the top of the browser isn't that far away.

Potential lag due to constant server communication would indeed be potentially problematic.

You could also try doing a Google search to see if there are any auto-refresh scripts for GreaseMonkey (a Firefox plug-in), if you use Firefox. Or find someone with some time on their hands and ask them to write a code for GreaseMonkey to do it, as the scripts to run are only written in jS (javascript). And they'd be locally-run scripts, so no lag, :).

There's plenty of scripts to auto-refresh the browser available through a Google search, it's then just a matter of using GreaseMonkey to run them.

The original site doesn't.

I don't think this is necessary, personally. It's good to have things in the order in which I left them, until I refresh something.
