My Xbox 360 will not install the expansion pack. It says "You must have a hard drive to install this expansion pack. Attach an Xbox 360 Hard Drive and try again." My Xbox 360 has 2.9GB free and an additional memory unit that has 15.6GB free... what do I do?
'Cannot Install "Dragon Age Origins - Awakening"?

Not sure what others' experiences are with memory units, but it increasingly looks like DAO generally requires a HDD to install games. Even the official EA reps around here seem to confirm that.
Unless someone can point out otherwise it looks like you might be stuck.

I just figured out my Xbox 360 model (4gb) does not come with a hard drive, BUT that additional memory unit I have plugged in is a hard drive (holds 250GB)... so how do I get Awakening to install onto that hard drive?

Is there something big and obvious I am missing? I'm not good at this kind of stuff :/

You're going to have to clarify, for yourself at the very least, whether that 250GB is a HDD or a Memory Unit. The two are different. (Judging by the size I would suspect a HDD.) See where it is plugged in which will depend on your 360 model: is it the old white model or the newer black Slim model. With the old white model the HDD plugs into the 'top' or side depending which way you've positioned the console. The Slim models are internal HDD from what I understand. Or if you are plugging in via a USB port which would dictate that it is probably seen as a Memory Unit to the console.
If it's a HDD you have I would suggest removing it and plugging it back in. Sometimes a loose connection can occur.
If it is a Memory Unit, i.e., plugged into a USB port, then I don't think Awakening will install to that even though you have enough space on it. Again, will need confirmation on that but I suspect it won't.

My Xbox360 is the black model.
This:

is what I have plugged in.
My Xbox360 is classifying this as a Memory Unit.

It does look like you'll need a proper HDD which slots into the 360 itself and not an external HD in order to install games to. (Might be something to boost Microsoft coffers.) As you've stated your 360 classifies the HD as a MU, and if a game can't be installed to an MU....
