With my vanguard, I only ever run around with a SMG (keeps my recharge at 200%). With Charge + Nova (and heavy melee), I rarely need to use my firearm. Shotguns, unfortunately, are too heavy for my character.

If you're maxed out on carrying capacity and you've got decently high number weapons, you can carry a the Shuriken and either the Phalanx or the Predator and still have 200%.  I was running out of ammo sometimes when I ran with only the Phalanx until I realized that I could take the Shuriken too and it didn't make my cooldowns any longer.

My vanguard only carries a phalanx. My engineer started off with a sniper rifle, but I've been trying out SMGs now since I've been getting tons of mods for them. I prefer power cooldowns instead over multiple guns.

1 weapon for every class. if you need ammo just go to one of the 5 ammo boxes on the map

using phalanx and tempest give me pretty quick coolddowns for both infiltrator and sentinel. phalanx with scope allows me to 'snipe' enemies that are far away and then i just use cryo blast/warp and tempest on unshielded enemy. takes them down pretty fast.

but yeah, i rely on my powers a lot so i equip light. going to try and equip 1 weapon next time i play.

Vanguard: Claymore I
Engineer: Phalanx VI/Tempest IX
Quarian Engineer: Avenger X
Adept: Phalanx VI/Tempest IX
Asari Adept: Mantis IX
Infiltrator: Avenger X
Salarian Infiltrator: Widow II
Krogan Soldier: Revenant/Mantis

Don't play the Human Soldier or Drell Vanguard. I should really try the Drell though.

I am playing infiltrator(human one with upgrade to weapon weight) and I use widow + phalanx. I need two weapons, because on gold you can't one shot enemies with defenses up, actually seems it is some kind of bug, because it doesnt matter if I use mantis/widow with cloak up/down it still take 1shot to strip defences and then u need to finish enemy with full hp bar, my strategy is cloak=>widow=>cryo blast=>phalanx kill=>reload widow=>repeat. Actually in some cases you need to kill several targets in the row phalanx fit really well here.

For my Adept I just focus on recharge.

For my Engineer I find a balance. I found that the scimitar, and carnifex works fine.

For my Soldier I don't give a ****, and I go balls out using the heaviest, and strongest weapons I have.

While ammo is mostly available throughout the majority of the map, I have run into a couple situations on silver difficulty where I ran out of ammo with one weapon, while cornered in location not near ammo resupply, so I'm of the belief that SMG/Pistol combo is better than the recharge tradeoff.

I also prefer to heavily fire my weapon between power cooldowns (even as a caster class with 1.5-3 second cooldowns) as I feel like the DPS is likely to be higher that way than simply trading off for the extra 0.2-0.5 seconds of cooldown. On my level 20 sentinal with Tempest SMG/Phalanx Pistol cooldown has been between 100%-147% (as I got higher weapon versions), which was MORE than adequate.

Truthfully though it all depends on how you play... some people just WONT shoot their weapon enough regardless, and quite frankly "if you aint gonna use it, you might as well lose it." - So you have to take into account how YOU will play yourself. I easily make use of the extra weapon, while I've seen other players that dont need/dont justify the 2nd weapon.

Being power dependent (Melee vanguard) it is best going with a good pistol like the Phalax and nothing else, so you can charge as often as possible. 200% recharge speed is very handy.

If you are weapon dependent, then I'd go with two weapons, one heavy, one light.

I play one pistol only.
As I have only Engineer and Infiltrator.
Both are pretty high lvl.
As soon as my cool down is done, I am casting another cryo / incinerate.
The pistol is more than enough.
Incinerate (max) takes a good piece of health and stuns the enemy - a few deft phalanx shots and they are down, especially if you hit head.
With Infiltrator a Cryo pistol melee combo will easily do. Also having the ability to cryo spam, means you can take out multiple enemies as you can easily keep a whole bunch of enemies frozen at the same time.

Don't really see much point in bringing two weapons unless you are a sentinel or a soldier. For the Krogan, it depends. Why? Because you don't need weapons to begin with ;)
