I have a mild dislike for the character.
One of the reasons is his arrogance. The others include forced friendship, over use in marketing, and people asking how anyone could dislike Garrus.

How could you dislike Garrus, Collider?

I used to really like Garrus myself, until I noticed his character arc is the same in both games and he has the least amount of dialog in 2. Don't really hate him though, more or less just I just think he is "okay"

Garrus should've been the main character in Mass Effect. In the beginning ME1, he was already investigating Saren while Shepard didn't even know that Saren existed. Before ME2 he was on Omega, instilling fear in criminals while Shepard spent those two years being dead. I'm pretty sure Garrus is doing something equally awesome before the events of ME3 while Shepard is being grounded on Earth.

Bottom line - Garrus is ridiculously cool.

I've found that, in general, Garrus is one of the most popular squadmates. However, there are always people who dislike a character for one reason or another and creating a thread called "why all the hate for [insert character here]?" is always going to get responses from those people.

I find it interesting though that the biggest reasons why people dislike Garrus seem to hinge on things that don't have anything to do with his character (over-representation in marketing and enforced friendship with Shepard).

Garrus is one of the most popular characters; the reason he's recently been getting a lot of hate is because he made the ME3 squad, and people are upset that he beat their favourite to get in. There's a similar situation with Tali and Liara.

Garrus and Shepard have the best bromance. Who could hate him?

Yes, and all the whining, whinging and harassing fans of a particular character ain't gonna change the squad lineup come March 6th.

If Garrus had stayed on the Citadel he would have ended up dead. Too much white, in society the police has to be gray. He would have ended up busting the entire citadel on drug felonies and corruption charges.

I didn't mean to start anything by my OP. I am new to the boards and was just curious. I am trying to gain an understanding. I have a saying "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even if they are wrong"........lol.
Seriously though, I can understand dislike for the way his character is written, or lack of dialoge in ME2(this bothers me some, however I like Garrus). I don't understand how you can hate a character for how the makers choose to advertise. That absolutely makes no sense.

Probably cause Garrus is a favored companion more then others besides Tali and Liara.

Or people just don't like him. People are entitled to there own opinion.

I never really cared for Garrus ( there was no character development between games, it's revenge again in ME2), but I don't hate him.

This isn't my personal opinion, but I think some people hate him because of the preferential treatment he gets over other squadmates. Mind you, Tali is probably more hated, because Garrus is actually pretty cool. The irrational hatred is owed to other people's favourites getting the shaft.

On the other hand, I've never been able to understand why so many people have an irrational hatred toward characters like Ash or Miranda, when their fanbases don't really do anything to offend. Still, different tastes for different people, I guess.

This.

I don't trust him. When he was after Sidonis and said something to Shepard about betrayal...it just didn't sit right with me. And then after reading his dossier about his family situation I wondered why he never mentioned his family to me if we're such good friends. He'll put a bullet between my eyes if it means saving his mother I bet and Cerberus surely knows that.

Actually, it seems to me that Garrus is the eternal sidekick character to Shepard. I don't think that's a good thing, but so far as he's being portrayed, at worst he might complain if Shepard does something he doesn't like.
