I didn't really care, that kid was pretty stupid and had a bad voice actor anyways. If they wanted to make us emotional, they would have probably killed off that stupid kid's dog or something.

Speaking of dogs, I felt way more emotion when the bad guy shot your dog in the head at the end of Fable 2 than seeing transport kid getting blown up.

That scene in Fable shows how to play off our protector emotions, transport kid shows someone aware of the concept trying to get a cheap thrill.

@Major League:
Anyone notice how people make stupid posts about 'killing kids', when if they stopped and thought about if for more than the impulsive 3 seconds it took to mash out that string of text, that it's obvious if you have a heart, to notice that killing of those whom are defenseless (children) and weak/debilitated (elderly) stirs the protective side of those whom DO have a heart and want to protect those in need. No? Unsurprising.

@Medhia Nox:
If you care about others besides yourself, which is the driving force behind CDR Shepard and those whom are like-minded to him/her should not need the reinforcement of the death of a child and those that tried to rescue him to want them o fight harder, but such are the things in a war, and especially one whom is so one-sided in the opening moments of the demo.

It has nothing to do with Narcissism, which in truth makes no sense for you to even reference in this context.

you do realize it's a video game and your trying to judge us by our actions over a video game?  reminds me of the time i was compared to hitler for making a joke about Quarians and concentration camps

idc that they killed a kid, but i want them to try and get our emotional interest, without using the same idea over and over

So you probably don't want me to tell you that every time you finish a world a kid is randomly killed then. I thought the one where the kid walks in front of Normandy's engines and is vaporized had excellent cinematics and you could really feel the sound of the engines rev up.

At this point I expect another "emotionally engaging" moment where an old lady with a stretcher is trying to outrun a husk.

No BW is killing kids because we asked for kids to be in 3 and since 3 is about reapers eating, killing, and enslaving people (hence we have to stop them) kids are part of the population and as such aren't immuned to reaperfication. The kids serve to show the evilness of our enemy they don't say aw look at the poor 10 year old he's sooo cute lets not kill him, but his parents TOTALLY THERE GUT EM'. I did tell everybody before if you want BW to have kids shown in 3 you better be up for implied child deaths too.

A few games to date games that have implied child death:

Velvet assassin (go to the ghetto see the little kids abandoned shoes, and small dead bodies with blood on the wall)

Siren aka forbidden siren ( travel with a young 6 - 8 year old girl if shibito find her she implied dies)

Assassin's creed rev. (woman and baby both die)

Games that have actual kid death

Fable (well kind of the guys kid gets turned into a trollish imp thing and you have to kill it)

Dragon age (you kill Conor)

So killing kids in games like movies, books, ect is nothing new.

So...because I don't get upset that a pile of pixels in a pre-rendered cutscene "dies" I don't have a heart?

Don't forget Dead Space 2, you kill hundreds of mutant toddlers and 5 year olds.

I wouldn't call it weak attempts, just some things won't have much of an effect on us compared to others. Like for example, I believe those who do have children would be more emotionally attached to the kids than those who don't have any.

Who was asking for kids? It is a bit odd that there were no kids before now (outside of that weird baby conversation in ME1 that you have with complete strangers) but that is par for the course for many games.

Anyway, I thought the kid dying in the beginning of Fable 2 as well as the death sequence at the end of to be far more moving. I don't take issue with kids dying, I take issue with the entire plot point being getting an emotional reaction from killing a random kid.

Hopefully the game moves beyond the sappy killing of children...cause I hate kids. When little billy died in the shuttle it warmed my heart.

Any form of victimization is seen as a "weak form of emotional grab".

For whatever reason (I have my theories, best kept to myself) - gamers cannot deal with anyone in their video games being weak. Everyone needs to be able to carry a gun... everyone needs to be hard as nails... and everyone needs to be able to show no emotional scarring over the events that have gone on around them.

In essence... a large quantity of main characters in video games need to be purely fictionalized teenage fantasies about what it is to be a grown up.

More children should die. If it were up to me, that shuttle would've been filled with annoying ass kids to be exploded.

Honestly, if the Reapers blew up a school bus there would probably be less of an issue.

I want Banshee's to impale all of the children.

So, if I don't know anything about Mass Effect, I would see the commercial and a kid dies then I'll download the demo to watch another young toy ship enthuesist die. It gets watered down real fast I think.

Or at least that is what the writers think about games (and people who read comics).

As far as going after the love interest for the reaction. Eh. I don't think ME is that kind of game. Sort of like how you don't go watch a summer action flick to get a lecture on trade politics (why I think Star Wars ep1 did so poorly). Yeah, good writing needs to be there but you can't cram everything in there.

It's all part of their subliminal messaging to make little children afraid of playing outside with toys.

Come inside and play video games.

@Taleroth: I LIKE IT!

Seriously... what was that little girl doing outside in a field of sunflowers? Don't you know it's dangerous outside?

And why was she playing with a warship... gender confusion! It should have been an Easy Bake Oven!

I say the kids were included to show how serious this conflict with the reapers will be.
