I have a Tempest VIII, a Shuriken VII and a Hornet I and I have atleast one character for every class, but I can't find any use for the submachine guns.  If I want some for close range I use a shotgun, if I want something that can spray a lot of bullets I use an assualt rifle, and if I want something light weight I use a heavy pistol.  I've tried using them as back up weapons for some of my classes but I never end up pulling them out so there's no point in carrying the extra weight around.  They're the only weapon type I can't find a use for.

So what classes do you use submachine guns for? Am I missing something or are they really underpowered?

Submachine guns are close range and to be used with extended mag, the tempest with 90 round clip allows you to literally walk and fire continuously, its funny actually how insane it is, then quick reload and continue firing.

Also assault rifles are generally better, but aren't nearly as good for hip fire or moving and firing.

As for my use, I use with my adept, works extremely well from my experience...

The main function of the SMG is to be used with a sniper rifle or a pistol which may be better for long ranged use while the SMG can do mid/close with ease.

I used the Tempest for my Asari Adept, but I later switch it out for the Assualt Rifle.

Pistols are more than good enough in close. My infiltrator carries only a sniper because if the enemy is that close, then I cloak and run or heavy melee.

SMGs feel like the most useless class of guns. Much prefer an AR, sniper, shotty or pistol depending on class.

My vanguard has a 90 clip Tempest SMG along with 184% CD bonus. Shotgun is much more heavier than SMG and useless at mid-long range. The Avenger AR is also very competitive because it is light and packs a punch.

I agree though the Hornet is *useless* in terms of cost. The beauty of the SMG is constant rate of fire which staggers enemies at close range, which will help immensely on higher difficulty when you can't gib someone with a biotic charge/nova.

Now if only we can Akimbo those SMG baby....

If you can aim, then SMGs are useless. A heavy pistol provides better DPS at the same weight cost - period. They can also be used at either close or long range, whereas the low accuracy of the SMGs makes them ineffective beyond medium range.

Now that anyone can use any gun, and MP characters are restricted to only two weapons... I really don't see the point of SMGs anymore.

You are all saying this negative stuff about SMGs when we are facing Cerberus, but what about when you are getting swarmed by a horde of human husks? You will want a shotgun or an SMG that you can just pray and spray, Pistols and sniper rifles won't fast enough to take down targets that have no regard for their lives

No use for any of them. I don't play vanguard so I can't use them instead of a shotgun, and the heavy pistols are better for lightweight DPS, the snipers are better for distance and the assault rifles are better all-rounders.

Fair enough, I'll probably want an SMG for those, or a couple team members with SMGs and a couple heavier weapons for the heavier krogan/turian/asari husks

I tend to play with just a shuriken (scope+ extended mag) equipped when I play sentinel. I use it for long and close range and it gets the job done for me plus it weighs less than shotguns and AR's so more power recharge bonus is always good.

So?  Use the predator pistol.  It'll do more damage, and if you really need the ammo then you can take the extended mag.  The refire rate is very high and I'm sure it'll do wonders for thinning crowds.

Seriously, if you actually think that SMGs are good then you probably just can't aim.  Putting rounds on target is not hard.  You shouldn't need to spray out two dozen just to hope a few land somewhere near where (or who) you want them to.

I've been using the tempest on my infiltrator. I cloak and get in close and take them out before I am uncloaked. I played a shotgun infiltrator in mass effect 2 but I didn't want to haul the extra weight and so far it has been working pretty good. Of course combine that with a heavy melee and a complete build built around melee and my infiltrator is a beast!

Against Cerberus I will always choose the pistol over the SMG because that is the nature of that enemy, they slowly advance and flank you.  But when it comes to husks I will do my first round with an SMG, if I feel it is as unnecessary as you claim it is then I will switch, I'm not an idiot.  It's a matter of playstyle.  You are also forgetting that they can stagger more oppenents than a pistol could in the same time frame which is another anti-horde defense that it offers.  Pair it with incidiary or cryo rounds that puts out more debuffs as well.

Mature.  For the record I can aim, and I know when and when not to use an SMG.  But I'm not here to prove myself to you, on the internet of all places.

I'm doing this too :D Just changed my infiltrator from using Avenger to Tempest and I'm liking it!  Cloak + cryo blast + Tempest in CQC combat gets the job done with quick cooldowns. Now if only I get lucky and draw out extended clip for SMG...

IMO smgs are pretty useless, avenger is not much heavier and its a better all around gun. plus the smgs kick like a mofo
