I just got the Salarian Infiltrator (been getting veteran packs like crazy for him), and was real eager to play with proximity mines, but I've run into some problems. First of all is the detonation radius. I understand that for its damage and cooldown, too large of a radius would be overpowered, but currently a enemy has to walk exactly over a mine for it to detonate. It's more effective as a finiky grenade launcher than it is for making minefields.
The other thing is with mines exploding as I place new ones. I'm not sure if this has to do with the maximun number of mines that can be placed on a field or not, but it seems completely random. If there's a maximum number of mines, it should state what that number is in the ability description, should only start detonating when you've reached the maximum, and start by detonating the earliest one placed. My money's on this being a glitch more than anything, but some clarification would be very much appretiated.
A few issues with proximity mines...

I've had the same experience. It's a strange skill and does not feel intuitive at all. I'm afraid I can't give any more clarification than that. =/

I confused by the mines too. Sometimes I can place one and other times I can play two. I'm surprised that there isn't an opportunity to raise the maximum number through leveling. But at least they recharge instead of having to refilled with ammo crates like grenades.

I use it like this! Tactical cloak and prox mine to anything.
The best use I've found though is if you lay it just in front of Guardians, they will obligingly walk right over it.
Also can take down an Atlas pretty easily with it.

Yeah, with all it's wonkiness it's essentially a harder to aim concussive shot, and I really don't think the developers were going for that. I really want to lay minefields down around me to protect me from jerks getting up close while I'm trying to snipe, but the way things are now, I'm lucky if I can get 2 out without them randomly exploding on nothing.

I usally stick them to walls in places where enemies will be going often, like on top of the ladder on firebase white, I leave then after a bit i get notice saying my mines killed 2or 3 guys across the map.

I only use them for the Atlus, I didn't put many points into proximity mines myself and focused all my main points on energy drain and salarian operative. The proximity mines do work great on the Atlus, combine them with focused shots from a sniper rifle (I use the Mantis) and you can take them down very quickly. Another way I use them is for groups of enemies, if you throw one at the feet of a large group it can take most of them down to about half health, so you can mop up with a secondary pistol if things get tense.

You can also kill Guardians quickly by shooting your Proximity Mines behind them when they start walking up on you.
