I have always been a PC game player.  Never considered a console but my son is bugging me to get one this Christmas.  Thing is I really don't know anything about them except what I can gleen off the internet.  Would really like to get a little input from gamers that actually use em.

Soooo... anything anybody has to say would be appreciated.  Currently I am leaning toward the X-box.

My biggest pet-peve is using the controller.  Is there anyway you can hook a mouse and keyboard up to a console?  Dumb question I am guessing but then it shows how much a novice I am regarding this type of gaming rig.

Thanks in advance to all who help me, it is appreciated.

:)

To me, the Xbox 360 is probably the best choice. Primarily due to there being a large number of games available, more pricey than the Wii but cheaper than the Playstation 3. Also has decent parental controls and such built in if that is any concern. To my knowledge, I don't believe a mouse will work with any console, and I think the Playstation 3 is the only one that can use a keyboard (but not usable to actually play games). They do make a little messenger pad that attaches to the Xbox 360 controller that is kind of like a mini-keyboard like a texting cell phone. But that just makes it easier to write messages and text chat through the Xbox 360. All three that are out have internet connectivity, all free basically, though you can pay for extra "privleges" with the Xbox with a gold account (vs. the free silver one).

Hopefully that is helpful, just remember to equip your heaviest armor or take Sten along if you plan to go shopping on Black Friday :-p

It really depends on your son and your interests (like, the age of your son, do you prefer JRPGS or WRPGS, does he want to play online, the amount of money youre willing to spend, and how serious of a gamer you guys are) Basically,

The wii is geared towards console/video game newbies and nintendo fans but is more for a younger audience due to the cartoonish/easier feel of all the games.

The Xbox is more for those who like to play WRPGS (western rpgs) and who are serious about playing online, out of the three it has the best online experience except you need to buy subscriptions to it, I believe its $50 for a year?

The PS3 is more for JRPGS (Japanese rpgs) and alot of the games have an anime sort of theme. The online is ok and free except i feel it has the hardest controller to understand and is made more for those who are serious about gaming.

I don't believe you can hook up a mouse and keyboard to a console, but then again I prefer controllers/gamepads and they aren't hard at all to get used to.

I would get a 360, as I am not satisfied with my wii, also the ps3 is too pricey and i dont like many if its games.

GL and if you want to, give me some more info and I'd be glad to help you more

I inadvertently left you guys with the wrong impression, apologies. My son is 35-years old and he is bugging me to get a console because he says I would like it.  The console would be for me and price is not a problem.  I always thought I would not like a console because of the controller as opposed to keyboard and mouse.  I admit I am a bit stuck and old fashioned in my ways but my son is wearing me down (a great kid who is not a kid anymore).

Regardless it looks like most are on the side of the X-box.  One thing for certain I want very good intenet connectivity.  And the more games available the better however I am partial to RPG's and get a kick out of a good FPS, Half-Life Max Payne etc.  Also play a lot of RTS.

There is also to consider how many hours you are going to spend gaming as the Xbox is reputed for it's three rings of death and bad customer service.

AH well that clears up alot. From what you like, I would go with the Xbox, it has good rpgs, the best for FPS' and good internet connectivity. All consoles lack in RTS', which is why I love my laptop. (Who needs Modern Warfare 2 when I have Wc3 and dota!) Don't worry about the controller though, its harder to transition from one to a keyboard and I did that in a week or two, infact its like having all of your hot-keys at your finger tips and the joystick is natural for moving around.

So this is all i have to say really, feel free to ask any more specific questions!

Actually as long as you get an xbox pro or elite or get an intercooler ($20), RROD is no problem, I've had my pro since release with an intercooler and play it constantly (including Oblivion, Fallout 3 AND Dragon Age) Not one problem

And I swing with a miss :-p

Ahh, well then... Xbox has the best selection of RTS's for the console. Halo Wars actually plays relatively decent with a controller, being exclusive to the Xbox 360 and actually designed to play on a console.

Going by personal experience and preference, I really like my PS3.

In my experience tech help and customer service was excellent. It all really depends on what kind of games you go for, I would check out what's available for each system.

If you're going to maintain a PC for RTS games (consoles don't have the majority of strategy games, and those that do get ported are often poor) then that does rather change things. As a fellow PC gamer who's looked at consoles I think the PS3 might be the best choice as the Xbox and PC do seem to share a lot of games (e.g. All of Bioware's console games until Dragon Age, and Mass Effect 2). Personally I've never found enough console exclusives to make it worthwhile buying it as a secondary machine but I'm not that bothered about singleplayer FPS games which the majority of console exclusives seem to be.

If you already have a gaming PC. Then get a PS3.

The 360 is a glorfied budget PC, and while for many people that's just what they want, if you are a PC gamer almost all of the 360's games will be avilable for you on PC already, and will probably run better.

The PS3 however has more exclusives, and those have been optimised for it's system.

Uncharted 2 is still the best looking and best playing game around.

Whatever you do, don't get an Xbox360. It'll die on you in a year or two.
Get a Nintendo Wii or if you have big buks to spend get a PS3.
The Wii is more focused on family and party games.

OP, your best bet is to try out the respective consoles (if you have the opportunity) and see what feels comfortable for you in terms of controller and interface (researching games/exclusives is definitely a good idea too). I enjoy my 360 and PS3 - both have their advantages and disadvantages. My 360 red-ringed a few years ago, was still under warranty, and is working fine today post-repair. It's the system I'd pick if I had to own just one, and I'm more satisfied with its graphics relative to PS3 versions of multiplat games, but the PS3 has a lot of things going for it too. The PS3's DVD upscaling is great, it's a Blu-Ray player, and there are definitely some great exclusives (although I'd give that category to the 360 on the whole). There's no substitute for getting each system's controller in your hands and giving it a try. But if you're on this site, and you are, don't get a Wii. There are some great things about that system too, but Nintendo is determined to ignore serious gamers.

Nintendo wanted a family-friendly console and games to match, and it reminds me of their previous consoles mostly. I'm not sure what other gamers wanted from Nintendo but there's always going to be a problem with comparing the Wii to pretty much anything else.

Rather than ignore serious gamers, they've just catered to a different market. It doesn't seem that different to what they've always done.

Actually a while ago (one or two years ago?) they explicitly stated that they were going to ignore the hardcore gamer market because there wasn't any money in it and that "hardcore gamers would still have Super Smash Bros. Brawl to look forward to be playing for many years".

Short to say, they've only recently discovered that the casual market lacks something the hardcore crowd had; Commitment and a devotion to stay with buying their products. The casual market is extremely fleeting and never sticks with anything. They are fad-based people.

Perhaps it's more to do with some casual games being fleeting, rather than the people not being committed to them.

Cause and effect really. The games made for that crowd are rather poorly glued together, but the casual market isn't after the same sort of "steak" we'd be after.

I don't think you could make a casual game that could hold the interest the way a hardcore game could, mostly because they are designed in a certain way.

But who knows. I didn't think the Sims would take off, but look what happened to that.

Most games are multiplat and can be gotten on a pc.

I would recommend a wii over the xbox360 or Playstattion 3 as it's a different matured beast.

There are plenty of fun casual games though, but it doesn't mean the same person isn't going to also play a normal boxed game. :)
