In Origins, 7 of the 12 specializations can be learned through purchasing manuals from vendors. They are not available by all vendors, only certain ones will carry certain manuals.

Other ways to unlock specializations are through companions teaching it to you or through in-game events/quests. I don't want to spoil anything more for you here if you don't want that so I will say no more.

dragonage.wikia.com holds most of the info about the game if you are interested.

ya i went all through the wiki before i posted this, but i read there that you can purchase the Ranger manual from the dwarven vendor in the Party Camp, but i cant see it in his inventory. Is that because im playign with a mage as my main character?

No, it should still appear no matter what your class is. Tbh, it's very odd if it's not there.

i also dont see the following items from the party camp vendor as per wiki page:

-Final Reason
-Bergen's Honor
-Manual: Templar
-Manual: Ranger

*it should be noted that in my game (and first play through) that i got the Templar upgrade just by talking to Alister in the party camp. I was surprized and happy that i got that, and THOUGHT thats how the Templer upgrade was supose to be aquired after i saw that - but after reading the wiki that you have to purchase it from the party camp vendor, now im really concerned.

**system upgrade to 1.05 patch done MID-GAME, clean with no mods.

***just reloaded my first save of the party camp vendor to recheck his first-visit inventory list - NO MANUALS!
So i decided to check wiki on Varathorn's first encounter inventory list and found out that you get a Manual: Shapeshifter!  So i reloaded my save of his first encounter - guess what, NO MANUAL WITH HIM EITHER!  ;(

ok now im pissed off!

Final Reason and Bregen's Honor are exclusive to the Collector's edition, and *not* part of the Ultimate Edition.

Also, is this your first visit to the party camp with that character?  Bohdan's inventory "resets" after you leave the area and come back a second time.  Items you sold to him disappear, and other items appear.

You can do either.  Some specializations can be aquired from NPCs if you get them to like you enough.

Had you any mods installed at any time?  That could be an issue, even if you removed them.  However, the 1.05 itself shouldn't cause any glitches like that.

Varathorn's inventory (and the inventory of some other vendors) adds new items after the main quest is finished in that area (and depending on how you finished it).   Don't know if the manuals are pre- or post- success... the wiki should day.

Also, note that vendors will not be available if you already learned the specialization from an NPC... so if you learned "Shapeshifter" from Morrigan, then Varathorn won't have it.

Response to Raen:

-ty for clearing up the -Final Reason/-Bergen's Honor question, this explains why i dont have it as im playing Ultimate.

-I double checked my saves and i NEVER have had any manuals from any vendors upon first visit and future visits. Confirmed same results prior as well as after 1.05 upgrade.

-I am playing as a mage, only upgrade speicalization is 'Arcane Warrior'. Alister and Leianna both got their 'Templer' & 'Bard' specialization upgrades only after i had a long conversation with them in the party camp (2nd visit).

-Im playing on Ultimate Edition for my very first time playing DA - NO mods have ever been downloaded or installed - ever!

-Only hero/companion that came with a specialization when they first join the party was Morrigan (shapeshifter). And no companion has taught any specialization to date (as i have no need to).

I really want to make Leianna a ranger, i hope you guys can help solve this?

Not sure what's up.  I suggest doing a directed Google search.  In Google's search bar, type...

site:social.bioware.com your search terms

I still dont have ANY specialization manuals from the vendors in my game. But, I just thought of something.  I heard other users saying that when they reinstall the game (as i purchased & reinstalled Ultimate the same week as purchasing Origins as i fell in love with the game) that their speicalizations are re-locked and manuals missing from the store.

http://social.biowar...y-724010-1.html

Q: Sounds almost identical to my situation, could this be the problem, if so, how do i fix this?

Q: Also, since this is my first run at playing the game, how does a companion upgrade a specialization on the second playthrough?

You go through the same method as you did the first time. Example: Asking Ali all the stuff for Templar.

No clue about the rest. We have extremely limited ways to do much on the PS3. All we can really do, for most odd problems, is delete game data, the options file, and reinstall it all or restart the game, literally or entirely with a new dude.
