So you're saying that the Mass Effect series you would consider to be an adult work of non-fiction? That is essentially what you're saying, you know. Interesting; I wasn't aware we had made contact with extraterrestrials and were capable of FTL travel.SeminoleFarms wrote...
Thanks! However, I'd consider this a game more than a work of fiction of any merit. *Text Removed*
Then it's a good thing there isn't any graphical depictions of sex in the Mass Effect games, huh?SeminoleFarms wrote...
That's *precisely* my point. Since not everyone thinks alike, any graphical depiction of the actual act of sex is going to be insufficient to the majority of people. Ergo, you don't include them, you simply allude to the fact that it has/is/will happen....
That's art. Attempts to depict sex always lead down the path to Skinemax....
From the ESRB website regarding the rating for ME2:
Even the ratings board states that there is no graphic depictions of sex, only that it is alluded to.During the course of the game, ... Players can also choose to have 'romantic encounters' with the alien/human henchmen characters; this involves watching a guided cutscene in which two characters flirt, kiss, and/or embrace: clothed alien/human characters may prop a partner on top of a space console, clear away the clutter from a bed-slab, unzip a future-blouse, or just talk it out. Though an alien/human may gyrate her hips while on top (fleeting—one-to-two seconds), actual sex is never depicted—the camera cuts away to space furniture and ceilings.
--
To now answer your "question": No, I don't believe graphic depictions of sex are necessary to enjoy the Mass Effect games. However, I do believe that the "Romantic Encounters" are necessary, as they improve the characterization of your selected squadmate.

You feel there is no need to show romantic scenes during the course of a story that tries to build up a relationship, others do.
I think why some of us enjoy "the scenes" is because they are the "payoff" if you will. Hey, my Shep has been trying to balance saving the galaxy, drumming up support for the cause and starting to care for someone and if he succeeds, the payoff is seeing that relationship blossom into something rewarding. In the games, the scenes are a visual visceral validation of your actions in order to cement that relationship.

OP: The sex scenes in ME are porn and make me feel dirty.
BSN: They're not porn.
OP: The visual depiction of sex in ME is tasteless. I feel nothing for my LI.
BSN: Try a different LI. We Garrusmancers *wish* we had porn. <_<
OP: I only do human hetero relationships playing as Sheploo. In fact, just Miranda.
OP: Miranda's sex scene is tasteless.
BSN: Ok, we'll give you that. Don't do it, then.
OP: I want the achievement.
BSN: Good day to you, sir.
Well, you've done your copulatory duty in ME2. You can get back together with Ash in ME3, but you'll probably have to do the deed again. Lie back and think of the achievement, hon.

From ~ The Escapist
Here's to hoping we see an improvement in ME 3!
Like I said in a previous post;
I want a mesh of Me1 & ME2!
The tastefulness, Romance, & Individual scenes of ME 2
And
the realism romance of ME 1, Because As tasteful as Jack or Garrus was,
I prefer to not lose my immersion by going (" Are they humping in their
clothes or something.."ಠ_ಠ) or feeling cheated n Disappoint (*Head
Bump* fades to Black) ಠ_ಠ... "WTF!"

A "porn scene" is definitely not something I would want,if only because I think full on digital nudity/sex would look terrible. ME1-like scenes (possibly revealing a bit more) would be more aesthetically pleasing, I think.
There's also that, and maybe this is going to sound weird, but I think a "porn scene" might not "fit" in the game,as in it's too,um,life-like. Like,I wouldn't want to see Shepard using the toilett or brushing his teeth either...

This whole thread had an usually high standard of argumentation and wording (for BSN at least). I'm impressed. But this post made me laugh so hard I scared the cat (she had dozed off somewhere on page 5).
I think I'll have to use "Lie back and think of the achievement, hon." in RL from now on.

42 year old mum here....your playing a game in which you kill people....shooting them in the head, setting them on fire, freezing them and blowing them apart, etc....yet the concern is tame love scenes?....SeminoleFarms wrote...
I think it's funny how asking a simple question like this leads to the gratuitous "how old are you" stuff and all that, accusations of trolling, etc. It's like a "firewall" lol! I'm 53, five kids, seven grandkids.
I realize there's even worse porn on television, but I think the quality of television has been going downhill for a long time. Maybe computer games, now that they've been ruled an art in courts, are going to supplant television.
I just wish Bioware would lead the art side, you know, instead of becoming the "Skinemax" of video games with all the low-reputation that brings with it.
That's what I don't understand about society, our happy acceptance of violence and hate....but sex and the natural body are an issue?...It's non-sensical.

TBF it's now been appropriated by technical communities and has through that spread to all sorts of people who have neither read a Heinlein novel or wielded a soldering iron in anger.
As for parochial... well I think that among the many wildly varied and interesting takes on sex we have represented in our number, there is plenty of room for softfocussexuals like seminole to ensconce themselves without us necessarily thinking them parochial.

While I like the notion of romance ... you know, two people developing a love for one another over time ... the need to walk out of the room while the porn scene rolls sort of dirties the whole thing for me. Getting all the achievments oughtn't make me feel soiled and in need of a shower
Anyone share my view that a porn clip is nasty, or do you guys think there's no such thing as romance without the porn?

And to me, they hardly qualify as porn.
Well, I have certainly gathered that everyone is highly defensive of Mass Effect, and have little use for the word "porn" heh heh heh!
So in your mind, graphical depictions of the sex act are necessary in an enjoyable romantic storyline?
No, but such scenes can highlight the intimacy shared by two people and reveal the underlying emotions in their characters. In truth, it is entirely up to the writers and what they are trying to achieve. Mass Effect has always been rated M for mature because of its mature themes. Some players have had the same LI for two games running and ME3 will represent the culmination of that romance. Set that against the backdrop of annihilation and you can understand the powerful emotions evoked by that.
However, you seem to have a puritanical view towards such things and it makes me question why you even purchased an M for mature game instead of T for teen or E for everyone. It's like walking into a strip club, paying the cover, and being offended by the naked women in there. It doesn't make any sense to me because you are essentially authoring your own disgust.
