While I like the notion of romance ... you know, two people developing a love for one another over time ... the need to walk out of the room while the porn scene rolls sort of dirties the whole thing for me. Getting all the achievments oughtn't make me feel soiled and in need of a shower :P

Anyone share my view that a porn clip is nasty, or do you guys think there's no such thing as romance without the porn?

you forget, most people obsessed with romance in games are single or in a unhappy relationship lol

Dude, compared to ME1, the ME2 sex scenes are tame.

As you wish, my appraisal differs. Do you, personally, require a graphical sex scene in order to understand and enjoy a romantic storyline?

The issue I have here is the word require. Its an interesting wordplay that traps the respondant if they disagree there argument is undermined prima facie. Few people would argue that they need a graphic sex scene to recognise that sexual relations have taken place. A graphic sex scene is neither a necessary or sufficient condition for a romance story. That being said done well and tastfully a la Mass Effect 1 (albeit with a lack of variety) they can greatly amplify the experience. A beautiful romance culminates in a consumation and to describe them a dirty is an injustice imo.

That being said it could be argued that to an extent the censorship of these scenes trivialises the relationship particularly in a role playing game where you are meant to be the character. I find that its a greater disconnect (or distraction to use the OPs term) to have a fade to black as now my character (that I am supposed to be) is privy to things of which I am not. As an analogy its like just as Im about to have sex I became spontaneously blind.

Something the OP said is that he endured these sex scenes in order to get the achievement, I contend that is why he felt the aforementioned distraction without really engaging with the characters the sex scene most probably amounted to a one night stand which has left him unsatisfied.

A final thought; The OP said he had to quite literally turn away from the screen when this happened. How did he feel about Shepherd beating up a woman (al Jisani), executing a surrendering adversary on her knees (Shiala), beating information out of a prisoner (Thanes quest), shooting hostages (LOTSB), shooting a fan in the leg, pushing a kid over and stepping on his throat to get info (Mouse), ordering Jack to kill a disturbed man, or baiting someone into a field of view so Garrus could snipe them. These are just a few of the actions possible not to mention the scores of people you kill. Personally I have no problem with the inclusion of these possibilities I bring them up to illustrate a point; that as a society we find the depiction of consensual sex more controversial than some pretty heinous acts of violence.

Food for thought?

If you came away soiled from a mass effect sex scene, I think that's less Bioware's fault and more yours.

There's nothing quite so disgustingly pornographic as forehead-bumping.

We can talk about spoilers in this subsection right?

The guy who played one of the full builds stated that some of the romance scenes are pretty raunchy and one is pretty much like softcore.

So look forward to seeing ME3 on Fox News.

I've played a lot of video games where you can romance someone, such as Harvest Moon. While I enjoy the tame romance where you simply kiss and spend your gameplay with them, they do not offer a realistic feel to romance. Romance in reality will lead to sex, as it is necessary for reproduction but also is a way for two people to come together and truly "love". With Mass Effect, I'm surrounded by future of our (fictional) reality. So yes, I would like to see my Shepard and my LI show how much they love each other, mushy dialogue and all. But is it "required"? No. The game company can simply remove the romance feature all together, but playing Mass Effect wouldn't feel so real, now would it?

SeminoleFarms,

To answer your original question as posed I do not require sex scenes to enjoy the romantic sub-stories and agree that Miri's is forced IMO. But the Paragon scene with jack and tali's are well done and add something to the characters themselves. It is my opinion that when these types of scenes are done properly and add to the spirit and life of the characters then they should be welcomed and encouraged.

uhm, how about a button you press to skip the scene if you do not like it?

i believe there is a button that allows you to skip dialogue that works for cut scenes too.

that being said, i liked the ME2/DA2 romance scenes, the build up to the sex, the black screen, which they left what happened during it to the imagination. i would use the skip function if the scenes are as the poster said about some being raunchy.

plus wasn't it said by a dev or someone in there that the scenes were going to be like ME2 in terms of raunchiness?

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. So I decided to help you out. Image IPB

Also, if you want to finish a romance with someone, but don't want any of that messy kissing stuff, you could always romance Tali or Garrus.

Actually, I'm not the one using that word, except in reply :P

Inter-species sex? Meh, no. Don't get into other species myself. It's not just the basic gross factor, but the reality that even being able to have sex with alien species is so far-fetched as to destroy any necessary suspension of disbelief.

Flying around faster than light, giant doomsday robots, intergalactic UN, that's all fine, but the moment two sentient beings of different species want to do the horizonal dance WHOA that's UNREALISTIC!

According to an old man like me who's probably older than 95% of the BSN community, no, romances do not require teh smeckz. But to everyone else on BSN, it's a case of 'R0MANCES NIED PR0NZ OTHERWISE IT N0 R34L'.

Kids, Google exists for a reason. Use the damn thing.

I've always preferred the romance scenes that are more emotional rather than physical. Garrus, Tali, Thane, and Jack's (Paragon) scenes were all like this, and they're my favorites. The other scenes are just awkward to watch, in my opinion. I'm not offended by them or anything like that, but I have directed my attention elsewhere for a few minutes until it's over. I'd like the ME3 scenes to be more like ME2's.

Seriously? That kind of response isn't exactly demonstrating a lot of maturity for someone who is supposedly "older than 95% of the BSN community".

And use google for what exactly? Do you actually believe that people do the romances just to get off? There are easier ways, y'know.

You can show full frontal nudity in a movie and no one bats an eyelid, but when it comes to videogames everyone freaks out over some alien side-boob.

Dude, blue side-boob. Short of bondage, that's very much NOT natural! Boobs should not be blue.

Oh I know what you'll say. They are aliens so it's ok. It's NOT OK!

Blue.

That is all.
