Okay, quick topic to see if anyone feels the same.

I, like many, many others, hated the random unlocking system. I wanted to play the different races, and I wanted to do it now. Or at the very least, I wanted an unlocking system that gave me a clear objective, like "hit level 15, get a turian", or something.

But now, I've gotten about 35hrs into the demo. And I have three races, every weapon past v.IV, and I'm itching to unlock more. I tried to put that in perspective after I finally got my quarian.

See, when I unlocked that quarian in a veteran pack, I actually bursted out like a little kid over it. It wasn't a, "Finally, jeez..." It was more of a "OH! OH! OHHHH! **** YEAH! I got my quarian! Yes!" About 30hrs in. In Gears, a somewhat similar multiplayer/unlocking experience, I never had that reaction. Sure, it took until level.75 to unlock the best Carmine, and it took until lvl.100 to get the sweet golden omen skin, but it became more of a chore checklist than anything.

I checked on my Xbox Rewards site to see how much I've played Gears, and I'm nearly up to 500hrs, almost entirely in multiplayer. Judging by how much my friends and I are digging ME3's MP demo, I think it's safe to say I'll be going into the triple digits in hours playing. If that's so, then shouldn't I be glad that my race unlocks are few and far between? Maybe Bioware's smarter than I am. If I unlock all of them quickly, I'll gravitate to one or two races more, ignore the others, and burn out more quickly. But if I just keep buying packs, I'll play what I unlock when I unlock it. And if I keep up a 3-chars-every-30-hrs routine, then I'll have everything unlocked after a substantial amount of time playing. Isn't that kind of what I want to begin with?

Take my turian sentinel for example. He was my second unlock. I don't really like turians; if I had to pick with race I'd want to unlock last, it'd be turians. But because he was brand new, I dropped my other characters and just played him right away. Didn't like him at first, but that new character smell wouldn't go away. Now I've learned how to better utilize his powers and slower status, and while he's still not my *favorite*, I'm pretty damn good with him.

All this said, it would still be nice if race unlocks/upgrades happened a tad more frequently in the main game; I'm still just wanting a purple asari, dammit. <_<

Exactly. There's a REASON why opening packs of cards (Magic, Pokemon, etc) is so much fun: you don't know what you are going to get. When you open that pack and get a really awesome and expensive rare, the rush you get is way better than if you had just bought the card online or something.

Yea, the struggle of getting your favorite race and getting the options to customize it, and the guns you prefer, will be worth it.

Don't see why everyone is so impatient.

congrats on getting your quarian, even though she'll be gone when the demo/beta is over :D. lol.

Exactly. That is why this system is here.

Well, partly agree. While I see the benefits and fun of this system, it does tend to get annoying 'unlocking' the same character/weapon/mod again and again, especially if you don't need.
But then again this is a demo with only two kits available. I think this system will truly start to shine once it is actually complete.
So, no worries here.

I think the difference in frustration is for the people who've never gotten anything good (more species, cooler weapons, etc.) out of the system, despite playing just as much as you have. In 35+ hours, you got 'three races, every weapon past v.IV' and such, while many (myself included) have put that much time in and gotten....all color options unlocked for Human Male Adept, a class I don't even like.

I got a krogan soldier in my starter pack, and very little else of consequence. I'm sure that when I get my second alien, it'll be just as good as you say, but until then it's extremely frustrating to know that no matter how long I play, there's no greater chance of me getting anything than there was six days ago when I started.

Many weapons/races/mods were locked in the demo so you'll be seeing a lot more variety in the packs in the full game, also there will be other packs to buy as well.

I was stuck with my male human adept for a long long time. Then I finally unlocked a Salarian Infiltrator and I was all HOLY OH MY GOD HOLY CRAP WOAH I GOT A SALARIAN.

It is quite the rush yes..

I have no aliens and it doesn't bother me at all. I like the idea of aliens as rare classes and a surprise to see in a MP game, and with whom it is a unique experience to play with. In other words, I don't think that they should be very common because it ruins the exotic feel when you play with or as one. Random weapon unlocks are another story though.

Indeed. It's a little dull in spending 20k credits just to get 3 rockets and a mod for a gun you don't use. Once everything is unlockedd there will be a lot more variety.

Staindgrey, Pokemon was the first thing that came to my mind when I seen those unlocks, and I loved it. I still do, the unlocks system was made for me to be honest.

@Chadeaux, keep in mind - you unlocked all customization options for all your future Adepts, if you'll unlock a different race - they will also have those customization options, so it's not like you wasted them.

It is a tad unfair, but such is any other random booster pack system. I only unlocked weapons and upgrades up to N7 rank of 35 and then got a Quarian engineer and a Krogan soldier in two packs one after another.

Pretty sure that's not true. I have all of my customization options for my human sentinel, but none for my turian sentinel. I think that's why it's a "human sentinel" card, and not just a "sentinel" card.

EXP goes to all of them, but visual customization is specific.

nothing wrong with the system, crazy players have already unlocked almost everything so its not like its impossibly hard...

i just hope they dont let people buy credits with real money to spam the boxes.

What I like best is that the leveling system is inclusive to the class. I don't have to go through the process of leveling up a Human, Drell, and an Asari Vanguard. When I get the full game, my Asari!Vanguard will already be maxed out. Same for a Salarian Engineer.

Yes I actually have a love/hate relationship with the unlock system haha
  • I like it in the fact that its rewarding when i unlock something I want or need, i get pretty excited for it
  • but i also find it frustrating to drop 20k on a veteran pack to only get smg parts i dont use haha
  • However i think its good because when i get some of these unlocks be it classes or weapon parts it actually makes me try different stuff out.
  • Ive played every class but Soldier and Infiltrator and have found fun in playing all of them be it a certain race or standard human class.

Uh, your progress in the demo won't actually transfer to the full game.

And yes, this is a nice system. Instead of getting so and so much experience to unlock an item, it's left up to probability.

As much as I agree, I'd like to see minor tweaks.

Just, like, for example: I've gotten the Human Female Vanguard card enough times to change her lights twice, maybe three times over. I'd really like them to stop giving me cards for stuff I've maxed out on.

I haven't gotten anything good yet, but I am hopeful!!! : ) (not a single unlocked character, but I did get a Viper Sniper Rifle) One day!!!
It's an interesting system, and I think it adds to the game. If you could simply buy what you wanted, the numerous 'power gamers' would become annoying. "Why didn't you bring more medi-gel?!?! or XYZ, your gun sucks, buy a better one or don't play at all!!!" I can't wait to get a Drell Adept, and hopefully I won't have to wait for ever.

If it were not for this unlock system, I would not have tried the classes that I did. :) I have every third character for each class, every weapon (with several at X), and I am level 99.
