Avenger is not even close to mattock, only people that prefer to waste their bullets go for avenger over mattock.
A good use of mattock neat you and insane amount of headshots/kills its not even fun to compare,plus with ammo capacity upgrade it becomes a beast for any soldier/adept/vanguard.
The weapon also is light ( +170% recharge speed at level X upgrade) so you can spam your biotics with ease.

classes that worry more about weight limitations but still want to pack a mid-range weapon might prefer the Avenger, but Mattock is amazing, yeah.

I use the avenger for my adept. The main reason is it's lightweight. Any gun use from your adept should be supplementary anyway, it's all about singularity/warp.

So far, my favorite gun is the phalanx(scope). Power, speed, precision,very little recoil: all around great pistol.

Hope they fix Carnifex upon release, it's so OP. Only Widow has an answer to it's power.

M3 Predator.
Works like a charm, it has considerable stopping power, it's lightweight, and it's fast. Actually, I only carry the Mattlock as a back-up weapon on my Asari Adept.

I've been making use of the Mantis/Mattock combo on my Soldier.

Partially because I haven't unlocked many weapons and also because its been an effective combo thus far.

I love using Mattock+Scope or Phalanx+Scope, since I'm pretty terrible at actual sniping but decent at hitting things when scoped (and with the Mattock, I can get nice, high rates of fire).

On my engineers I use just a Predator pistol to keep my cooldowns at 1-2 seconds. It's highly accurate, has a good deal of ammo, and has a ridiculously fast fire rate.

If I ever unlock the widow I'm sure it'll be my fav sniper rifle. Looks sweet when I see people using it.

Phalanx that weighs nothing, is dangerous with an Asari Adept. Just wish I had a CARNIFEX!!!!!!!

Tempest now... Used to love mattock/phalanx but kept having to run for ammo even with clip upgrades. SMG i kept getting random unlocks for so... well. 80% extra clip, 40% chance no ammo used for the shot. 500-odd rounds, and doesn't mess with my recharge at VII.

Does about the same damage as my Avenger, and thanks to above I don't have as many "Where'd my 100 shots go?" as a guardian rounds the corner... Yeah, I'm not even going to try snipers, I'd fail quite badly.

I am still waiting for the Widow for my two level 20 infiltrator but the Carnifex is a beast. A mini sniper in rifle form. Just ran with it in gold and works wonders.

Scoped Phalanx is a great weapon. Impossibly versatile, good clip, good damage, useful at any range, barely weigys more than a Predator. Avenger is also good once it's stability is in check, love it on my Turian sentinel (Turians get lotsa bonuses regarding weapon stability, especially when it comes to ARs). Also, not a weapon, but few things in this game are as satisfying as ****-slapping fools to death repeatedly as a mighty krogan.

Wtf. 

Avenger has far less recoil than the mattock, weighs less, and has much better long range and spray and pray utility.

Every time you shoot the mattock it bounces down making headshots a pain.
