I meant to bring this up a lot earlier than today, but somehow I never did.
Now, we know no powers bypass shields. Not a single one, but given what some powers do, I have the impression that some were meant to bypass shields, because otherwise they're just too useless. The main ones that come to mind are the freezing ones (ammo and tech) and Miranda's slam.
Any other thoughts out there?
Powers not bypassing shields

With the enemies, AI, and cooldowns, if more powers bypassed shields the game would be a bigger cakewalk than it already is. To balance it you would have to change up the cooldowns, enemies and how they react to make the game worth playing if you did much in the way of changing powers. It is incredibly easy to make guys fly or burn or freeze no matter the level if you know how to use your powers to get the most out of them. Just go to YOUTUBE and watch a few gameplay vids of people tearing up Insanity on all classes.

Seems more like "half-baked powers" to me. Slam is just lame (it doesn't do that much damage and knocks people over where you can't hit them), the only use I got out of it was messing around using it against Husks as a soldier, and Cryoblast doesn't seem necessary.

@mcsupershort: You could always try playing a harder game if this is not challenging enough for you. May I suggest Commander Keen or something like that? Or perhaps The Unfair Platformer?
I would also point out that calling a game a cakewalk is entirely subjective. If you've mastered the genre and you're still seeking a challenge, it's simply time to find something new to start with. Things you have mastered no longer give any challenge by definition.
@FOZ289: Half-baked powers that would've actually been useful if they could incapacitate a shielded opponent.

Well, you were asking for thoughts, and enemy tendencies can be noticed quickly enough to be able to exploit them.
So basically, ME2 gameplay would need to be improved and rebalanced so that powers would not seem useless.

I'm shocked that two years after this game's been put out there are still people who find ME2's rock-paper-scissors game unsurmountable.
Anyways, BW did rebalance things and now in ME3 you can use 100% of your powers on 80-90% of all enemies and make devastating results... Yet the result of that is that ME3 is harder than ME2 ever was...
I dunno, 2 years ago this topic might've been somewhat relevant, but ME3 kinda makes the entire OP moot.

Sorry you find my thoughts so against you, but you asked, and i answered. This is a Strat and Build forum of a 2 year old game, thus mostly you will find either REALLY latecomers or people like me and capn that have played the game to death and fully understand the powers and how to play. Once you learn the game a bit, you realize that trying to force a square peg into a round hole doesn't work, but if you use the correct power at the correct time enemies die and do so quickly. Go to youtube and search my name and you will find a caster Adept playing on Insanity for the entire game in mission videos, and having ZERO issue with protections or needing a boost to them, I think capn also has some Adepts, as well as a few others. I am not currently playing ME2, Skyrim and a rerun in ME1 currently taking my time so I have moved on a bit, but I enjoy the forums and this game still.
You act as if you can't do anything with powers on Insanity, and it has been proven time and again, that you can use powers effectively and have a blast while doing so on all levels of difficulty. Please don't ask for people's opinion and then belittle them just because theirs is different than yours. Calling this game a cakewalk wasn't a shot at you personally but a reasonable comment about the hardness of a game especially compared to others that the hardest levels are defined by how many times you die more than how fast you can clear the level.

I don't have any adept videos. I didn't make any until very recently because I wasn't active on this forum until really a few months ago. However I have played adept on Insanity, and I have way too much time playing ME2 to be considered sane.
I realize everyone has different levels of experience with the game and that is fine. But there has been way too much complaining about the powers in ME2. All in all I find it more balanced than the first game. You just need to learn the mechanics. Many just didn't want to do that. Personally I don't care if someone doesn't have the time, but when someone spams troll posts about how adepts are terrible and the powers are useless that just strikes me as silly. This comment is not directed at the OP, just at a broad range of topics started by certain individuals frequently in the past. I think Adept is quite powerful when played correctly, especially mid-late game. No it isn't god mode like in ME1 but it is still very good. Perhaps the best class against husks and melee creatures because of the crowd control potential.
Now to get right to it the best protection stripping in the game is in general the weapons. It might seem odd but that is how it works. Of course Overload, Warp and Incinerate are good against their protections, and can be used against others as well. So use a squad that can bring those abilities to the table if need be. However your starting weapons as adept are SMGs and Pistols. Those cover Barriers / Shields and Armor respectively. It is somewhat tricky to use the Shuriken effectively at range, but it can be done with some trigger control. If you have the Kasumi DLC then do her mission early for the Locust, you might find it more forgiving although it is weaker against shields and barriers.
Another thing to do is use Singularity to stick protected enemies. This even erodes their protection over time, and they don't shoot back for a while. It is also one of the best powers on the husk heavy missions to set a husk trap.
This is already somewhat long and I am just scratching the surface. There are complete guides and vids on youtube. I watched mc's Adept series and it is straightforward and would be good for someone to watch who wants to learn the class.
