Thermal Clip reload animation violates lore

Hi again everyone.

I've been watching gameplay footage for ME3 from the local community and have noticed yet another inconsistency with the ME lore.

As all of you may have noticed, the player in-game reload animation has been altered. Now we see the thermal clip being inserted into the weapon which pushes out the old one. This is especially obvious when reloading the sniper rifle.

This is a huge lore mistake.

ME2 established that when we reload our weapons, all that is being ejected is the spent HEAT sink, not the entire thermal clip. This is what the animation portrayed whenever we reloaded our gun in ME2. We would **** the gun which would eject the spent heat sink that was carried within the thermal clip.

NOW in ME3 the player actually replaces the entire thermal clip after every reload.

This needs to be fixed or maybe Bioware has created another change to the thermal clip system that will be explained in the codex.

Thoughts?B)

EDIT: Example of the reload concept in-game for ME2: www.youtube.com/watch

lol nice attention to detail william, But if the ME laws were written from ME1 and the first ME book then you will find that they have been wrong since ME2. The entire concept of a weapon that stores the heat and can never be fired again without a so called thermal clip because it is unable to cool down itself is absurd. But its far from a game breaker so I let it slide..

Clearly an appeasement to the GOW crowd who are used to the active reload system.

The lore died after ME1, sadly.

Yes, lore died after 1 because they retconned the way ammo works a few times. Lol. Is this board always like this?

More often than not. :D

But, I do  wonder what potential ME3 footage is being referred to at this point.

It's not violating if the lore enjoyed it.

The lore exploded after ME1 or it took an arrow to the knee. Either or.

Yes my good man/woman this board is all about the "fans" v.s. Bioware. Ahh the fans... <_<

I guess I don't see it as such a big issue. If the heat sink is ejected, then obviously another has to be inserted. In order to make it more visible and not look like Shepard was pushing nothing in they went with the full clip. And it's not like they didn't fundamentally change how the guns operate once already.

ME2 codec establishes the transition to thermal clips.  Now, a game mechanic which would not break the lore would be that we can operate a weapon without using up a thermal clip if we let it cool down a-la ME1, but if we let it get to overheat, the weapon has to have the thermal clip replaced, or it can be manually ejected, instantly cooling down the weapon (instead of waiting for the weapon to cool down).  Running without a thermal clip is probably something that the weapon software won't allow, thus why you can't shoot the gun without thermal clips.  But their use kind of like coolant flush in Mech Warrior would be more faithful to the ME2/ME1 lore.  But, I'm not complaining.  It's a very minor inconsitency made for the sake of game mechanics, and it doesn't exactly break the suspension of disbelief.

I didn't notice the entire thermal-clip replacement animation, though.  It's not a game-break issue, as in alot of fps's, if you do a tactical mag change, it merely 'refills' the mag, and you don't get a partially spent mag later on or next mag (well, ghost recon did do this, however).  That's sort of the same kind of error as the one that is being pointed out.

Yes, frankly the gun mechanic in ME1 was rather boring once you loaded up on with Spectre Weaponry and Scram Rails. You could make it more interesting by putting +500% weapons heat ammo in every weapon, but it was really broken. This lore needed violation.

Very interesting. Although one would probably prefer the weapon to overheat and malfunction than the user to lose his life because it didnt let him fire. Besides this point is moot as the new lore states that the thermal clips never loose its stored heat... which breaks the laws of physics itself..

BioWare just didnt have a decent enough idea for the modification of its original lore to accommodate for the much wanted awesomeness of a reload action which they thought by design would make for better marketing value..

hmm why we discuss this. For the sake of discussion !

The lore was set in sand, not lasered or carved into stone, in ME 1. This is called Retconning people, this happens to a series where advancement takes precedence over a story. The story is written to fit the game, and you edit to justify the game. The Lore in ME 1 wasn't even solid.

If they've been doing this for twenty years in 40k, what makes you think its compact heresy for Bioware?

Because deviation is rare in a progressive story where the foundation of Mass Effect is ME Revelation and ME1. Cant blame the fans for wondering why suddenly something doesn't make sense.

Well played, Sir/Madam.

Anyway....

The thermal clip thing, while not my preferance, isn't the end of the world. I can live with it.

The only thing I really dislike is the generic weapons for all factions bit, which tends to contradict the background lore somewhat.  But *shrugs* I can live with that too.

Also I thought the lore died during ME1 when Kaidan was able to spam his powers.

You guys are funny!

Look, it's not difficult to justify a change in the established lore in a fictitious universe because you can make up any explanation you want. I would accept it just like I accepted the thermal clip changes in ME2.

What I am miffed about is that this may be an animation mistake that won't be explained in-universe. Immersion is the function of any story told and when you start tampering with that immersion, it ruins the experience of the game.

A perfect example of this was the load screens and end of mission frames that were inserted into ME2. I don't know who thought of those changes, but they destroyed the immersion established in the first game. Elevators and air lock loading screens were always the better solution because the player had a reason to keep the controller in their hands even during between-sequence loads.

Am I being picky? I don't think so. Playing an RPG is akin to reading a novel. When I pick up the book and read, I expect to be transported into another universe. The books job is to keep me immersed in that universe so that I assume the character of the narrator. Videogames are interactive novels designed to tell stories that are malleable to the choices of the "reader". I hold such forms of entertainment to higher standards than novels because not only is it supposed to be more involving, but I also paid almost 8x the price for it.
