That said, heres my two cents. I think Mark Meer has done a pretty good job voicing MaleShep. I still give the edge to Jennifer Hale, whose performance as Femshep ranks as one of my all time favorite voiceacting gigs in gaming. Meer is very good though, and is not terrible as so many on this forum claim him to be.
And there are some areas where he's is better than Hale. Such as when Shepard is angry. MaleShep's delivery sounds very pissed comjpared to Femshep's. And Meer is much better as expressing exasperation. Witness the meeting with Conrad Verner in ME2.

Don't care what the overall haters "argument" is, but BioWare could've picked a big name to play Shepard and cut the budget for Femshep which is, face it, the secondary version to the game specially in the marketing department. And that wasn't the case. Mark Meer is there because his voice fits Sheploo, the official Shepard. Here's what you can do if you don't like.

If it hadn't been for Hale I likely wouldn't be playing Mass Effect at all. I don't like saying this because Meer seems to be a cool guy, but at the same time his voice is just a complete no. There were a million options better suited if you ask me.

He even did "I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite convention on the Citadel", lol.
Don't get me wrong, I love Hale's acting, but I tend to identify Meer as *Shepard*.

Someone on another site said it best. "When I hear Mark Meer's voice, I think, 'That's Commander Shepard.' When I hear Jennifer Hale's voice, I think, 'That's Jennifer Hale...again.'"

He did Mordin well at the E3 Demo. All Salarians and Vorcha sound good anyway.

But my "canon" Shepard is mostly Renegade, and I simply cannot imagine him without Meer's deadpan, semi-bored voice. It makes the character for me.

There's a reason as to why Mark is Shepard, and it's the same reason why Jen is the female Shepard, he's got the talent to be that character, his voice is clear and he doesn't has to fake it to imply emotions as Jen sometimes does IMO.
Because he doesn't even bother to emote as Shepard. Which I blame completely on the direction he's given, becuase Mark Meer is talented and CAN act well, for whatever reason, the directors had him act with as little emotion as possible in ME1 and most of ME2

i love the bit where in ME2 you bump into conrad verner, if you choose the renegade option and shoot him in the foot.
shep goes "this is not acceptable" in THE best tone ever.Better than hale's delivery imo.

To each his own. Personally I think claiming 'he doesn't even bother to emote' is a little like claiming that black is white, as it simply requires attention to what is displayed for it to be proven wrong, but then, thats opinions for you.

Same here. The guy is seriously underrated.
This.
One of the things that drew me into Mass Effect initially was how much Commander Shepard reminded me of some of the Staff NCOs and Mustangs (officers that started off as enlisted men) I knew while I was in the Marine Corps. Part of that is the writing of course, but Mark Meer's excellent delivery also lent authenticity to the role.
In comparison Hale tends to over emote at times. For Hale or FemShep fans that might make certain scenes more dramatic, but for me it just makes Fem Shep less believable as a career military officer. Now before I get flamed, let me state that I think Hale is one of the best voice actors in gaming and she is very good as Fem Shep as well. But Meer absolutely nailed the role.

Taking into account only the Mass Effect series however, I like Hale for Paragon, and Meer for Renegade. When Hale does Renegade it sounds like femshep should live up a cold mountain somewhere with an eternal thunder storm outside, cackling to herself and wearing an obscene amount of velvet. And Meer just sounds kinda bored as a Paragon.
