Mark Meer's Commander Shepard voice is awesome, and easily matches Hale. They both have their high and low points in the series.

However, Meer wins overall because he also voices the Volus and Vorcha. THE VORCHA. Think about it. My vocal cords feel strained just thinking about it.

There's a reason as to why Mark is Shepard, and it's the same reason why Jen is the female Shepard, he's got the talent to be that character, his voice is clear and he doesn't has to fake it to imply emotions as Jen sometimes does IMO.

Because he doesn't even bother to emote as Shepard.  Which I blame completely on the direction he's given, becuase Mark Meer is talented and CAN act well, for whatever reason, the directors had him act with as little emotion as possible in ME1 and most of ME2

though I like Meer as a paragon shepard, another reason I like Mark Meer is because he rarely has shepard show emotion and that is what I prefer in any hero/heroine just throw the emotions out the door.

They're both fine, but not what I could have wished.

Meer was not very good in the first game, he improved in the 2nd and is amazing in the 3rd demo.
I still lol everytime he says "aboot" or "oot" or something. Makes me thing of Terrance and Phillip.

Hale is generally good, I just wished for her to soften her voice a little. Femshep sounds like she is trying to imitate a man with every line.

I prefer Meer. It's hard to explain why. There's one specific moment in ME2 where you're trying to get into the plague zone to find Mordin, and the guard doesn't want to let you in. The line is "If I find looters, I'll kill them. If anyone gets in my way, I'll kill them too." Meer delivers this line with some exasperation, like "don't you know who I am? I'm Commander Shepard. Do I look like I give a f*** about looters?" Hale really overdelivers; she's dripping with malevolence during a pretty mundane conversation. If femshep could have a mustache, she'd be twirling it and tying the guard to train tracks. Meer's delivery of this line is so much better, and femshep is full of really offputting overacting like that. I'd rather Shepard sound exasperated than psychotic.

I like him for paragon, but I think Hale is a lot better for renegade.

I agree. I only have two sheps- my cannon paragon male and non-canon renagade female. The voices work well.

I never liked Meer's voice as Shepard it seem to hoarse and put on, however his work as Niftu Cal and Mordin were brilliant, the man's got talent... but I can't stand male shepard... too robotic.

I tried playing a Femshep in the demo but I hated it, after getting used to Meer and his voice acting Hales just sounded pathetic and oddly timed

He's awesome, his paragon voice delivers just the right tone feeling to the character. I have no problem connecting the voice to my characters appearance, it fits like a glove.

After getting used to Meer, Hale's voice acting lacks certain "warmth". I guess some people like the ice-cold voice, but I don't.

I prefer Meer's voice work compared to Hale she is far too emotional for me to take her seriously.

I think the perception going around for years now that Hale's voice work was "so much" better than the guy who does Male Shepard is pure fanboy/fangirlism. I loved her voicework on KOTOR and more recently SWTOR but I never cared for her voice work on Mass Effect. She tries way too hard to sound "tough/butch" and it's always sounded awkward and forced to me. I always wished that femshep was more of a unique experience when compared to maleshep rather than exactly the same with female skin. As a result at times it feels like femshep is impersonating a man which just doesn't work for me.  I've always preferred male Shepard's voice actor.

See I feel the exact opposite.

Meer's voice work seems cold and flat to me, like Shepard doesn't care at all about what's going on. very bored and monotone.

Conversely, Hale's voice acting has spirit and brings personality to the role. She seems anything but cold to me.

I've always liked Meer's voice acting for my paragon shepard. Hale's voice just grates against me and brings me out of the game. Personal opinion though, as it should be.

Mark Meer conveys what a space marine would sound like to me.

He sounds calm, cool, collected and confident. He does a very good Paragon and a very sarcastic Renegade, I feel.

I can't take Hale seriously. She often injects to much emotion in every line and over does it. Say what you want, but I'd rather have a Shepard that sounds like he has it together - more realistic - then somebody who can't control how they feel.

I've never heard any "oot"s in his speech, he isn't even from the area where that accent exists.

seeing as sheploo looks like one of my old high school teachers, and male shep's voice even sounds like him, I have to say I love the voice too. And considering he can do the voice of male shep AND all vorcha, the difference and quality of delivery for both is astounding.

The one line that really captures why I prefer Meer occurs down in the cargo hold when examining Grunts tank,  There's a renegade-ish response to EDI's recommendations of:  "I won't be second guessed on my own ship, BY my own ship".

Hale's delivery (which I didn't catch until I saw it in a Youtube vid yesterday) was very understated. A slight bit of menace but not much of it, and the inflection was nonexistent. Took an interesting line and turned it into a really flat joke. Meer absolutely nails it, just the right level of exasperation and most importantly the right inflection at the right points to really sell the pun. It's those little things.

I find after playing so much Sheploo by default, that any changes feel just too weird, hehe.

If there's one thing that stands out in this thread, it's that everyone is really lucky they went the route of creating two distinct 'takes' on Commander Shepard (from the voice standpoint). They followed the 6 Ps:

Proper Planning Prevents ******-Poor Playthroughs

: )

Meer's voice is too flat to me. Admittedly, I haven't stuck with him for very long (and I've heard he gets better). But half an hour into my first Mass Effect playthrough and I was diving back to the start to see how FemShep sounded, and I've been really happy with her ever since.

Meer is the reason I've literally never done a full Broshep playthrough. And I wish that was exaggeration. I've tried it in ME1 a few times and every attempt results in me quitting at some point before the evidence hearing on the Citadel. I heard his voice was better in ME2, so I tried that too and then I ended up quitting before even leaving the Cerberus tutorial facility.

If it hadn't been for Hale I likely wouldn't be playing Mass Effect at all. I don't like saying this because Meer seems to be a cool guy, but at the same time his voice is just a complete no. There were a million options better suited if you ask me.

listen to yourself - you nearly didnt play a game because you didn't like the main characters voice... how utterly f-ing stupid is that. you are a loser sir.:wizard:
