It's not that I'm unfamiliar with this specific genre of games.  I've gone through the BGs and the NWNs and the KOTORs.  It's not that I don't enjoy challenges.  I appreciate a good challenge, and I usually have the patience of a saint to dying over, and over, and over, I usually play on the hardest difficulty first off on a new game.  Nightmare sounded scary, so I did hard this time around.

My party's level nine and I die horribly...alot.  My main is a human warrior aiming at being a tank.  I've done Redcliffe and castle and my second stop was the Dalish camp, at which part I'm in the middle of the ruins right now.  I've been experimenting very heavily with my party to try and find a sweet spot to enjoy.  I've done  my tank, Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliara, specced as a tank, supporter/controller, and ranged archer respectively.  I've been tilting the stats of my main character between str, dex, and con (something like 20 con right now, 29+ str and 22+ dex), and otherwise appropriate stats for the other characters.  I'm only level 9 so my equipment is what I've got...heavy tier 3 armor on my main, medium on Leliana/Sten.

I just...get the feeling I must not be doing something right when almost every fight feels like complete, overwhelming murder.  Even on normal this seems to hold true, and easy only makes the white cons more trivial; the yellows and oranges still eat me for breakfast.  Let's take the current dungeon for example...

Possible spoiler:

Three chambers in a row, a virtual army of white con skeletons jump us.  My main, with sword and board, always has threaten and shield wall active, and has 3X the armor value of the next closest character (in this dungeon I've tried using Sten as a melee DPS, wearing whose 2handing in splint mail).  She's ahead of the rest of the part, and attempts to run in and hit them to gain aggro.  At least three run RIGHT past her, before I can even pull off a threaten, and pound on Sten usually, if I've managed to stop Morrigan from running in to do her fear prematurely.  I had thought the high armor value along with threaten should've negated this, but I guess not  I keep Morrigan and Leliana at a distance, having all three of those characters focus their fire while my main tries to land in those threaten hits.  Because of shield wall and threaten she has almost no stamina to do anything but the very rare taunt, but without either of those she seems to fail in a matter of seconds.

Almost every ability bought has been in the shield and sword tree, the few that aren't were in the warrior line up to Bravery.  Now when the skeleton swarms on my main, a few always leak off to attack Sten or the others.  If its Sten, he usually dies in a matter of seconds, even if I have him become a health pot fiend, which is somewhat counter productive anyway since he's not hurting anything while chugging.  Meanwhile Morrigan's maintaining the icy swords and the either the single or AoE vulnerability hex(to help with the icy swords I imagined, or whenever she throws in attack spell to help burn the huge swarm down fast enough) as well as occasionally hitting that PBAoE 1 second stun spell, and Leliana's maintaing rapid shot and song of valor.

A few of the swarm die, but usually Sten always gets mobs I can't pull off of him who murder him before he can do much of anything.  Once he's down my main is now usually falling like a brick, sometimes saved by a timely forcefield leaving ONLY an auto-attacking Morrigan and Leliana to try and pick off the rest before the forcefield falls and they murder my main.  If I've forcefielded before this, Sten always grabs aggro in seconds and is murdered.  Actually, every other fight is a pretty approximation of this formula, just replace armies of undead with a single revenant (with or without the overkill army of undead with him...) or the lone dragon I've faced.  i tried mixing it up with Alistar acting as a sort of off-tank (or vice-versa) to try and distribute the hurt better, but usually one tank dies way too quickly and obviously the DPS isn't quite enough to endure.

And that's pretty much been my experience so far.  Almost every fight involves needing to use injury kits afterwards, as its only those rare, disarmingly easy fights that seem random that this isn't true.  I feel that the level of crushing difficulty I'm seeing is a bit off, even for hard so I must be doing something wrong...I'm pausing almost every other action, I've gone through various tactic sets including the default ones provided, I just seem to be insanely overwhelmed almost every fight that I don't win in seconds.  Please, is there any advice or strategies that I'm just maybe missing?  Does it just get better later on if I somehow miraculously survive now?  I'd be very appreciative of any help ;)

There's a really good thread called something like "if you find the game too hard but don't want to switch to easy". Sorry I don't have a link

You'd have much easier time with 2 mages. I'm having difficulties with my rogue, Alistair, dog and Morrigan -setup on normal. I've also noticed that you need some heavy CC in some parts, like the part you mentioned for example.

Make sure Sten does not have Threaten turned on.

Leave your party farther behind- line them up well back in a known safe area, press H for them to hold position, then go pull with your tank.

Get some better AOE CC spells for Morrigan as soon as possible- Cone of Cold, sleep, or glyphs for the combo.

Consider dropping Sten in favor of Shale. Shale can attract and keep aggro much better than you can at low levels, which frees you up to fight more actively, peel monsters off your ranged troops, etc.

If in doubt, go to the Mage tower and get Wynne. I've said it before, but to be honest, playing with Wynne is like lowering the difficulty by an entire level.

Taunt immediately. Taunt is the only non-modal ability your warrior should be using outside of the odd shield bash on casters.

Cone of cold. That's pretty much the whole game. Get one mage casting CoC on one or two of the toughest enemies and keep them frozen while you chop up the others. Then have your whole group mop up the tough guy. I think you can get CoC by the time you get to Lothering, if not before. Pretty boring, but it almost always works.

Ignore your other stats, pump STR to 38 immediately. Put on Blood Dragon Armor. Win a lot.

If you don't use Wynne, give Morrigan a heal spell & consider giving her the Healer specialization eventually.

Unlock the Dalish area to buy Elfroots & make unlimited potions.

#1 Tactic slot for every char ... If their health drops <50% or 25%, use least powerful healing poultice.

Use pause a lot.

Consider ditching Leliana's archery path. Dual-wielding/backstabbing does grossly more DPS. I gave her Duelist & her performance in combat skyrocketed.

Taunt / Rally / Warcry are really the only things you should be spending your stamina on. Occasional stun bashes on casters or Ogres or Dragons being the exception. Get your Weapon and Shield skills up fast - not being able to be flanked is Good.

Do whatever you want to do with Morrigan, but give her some heals. Mages rock in this game, can't really go wrong no matter what spells you choose.

It's very effective to lure enemies in small groups instead of rushing to the middle of the room where six warrior and two mages are waiting for you. I'm playing on hard, my party consistes in my 2H warrior, alistar, leliana, morrigan, and i've got no major difficulty problems aside of the dragon

Pause often, have many health pots and... cone of cold ^_^
