it sounds more african than afro-carribean.
also i like it there is a lack of accents, relativly speaking.
If I'm right, it's Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. He's the English actor known for playing Eko in LOST and Wombosi in The Bourne Identity.

And the Jar-Jar comparison isn't valid. I wouldn't care about Jar-Jar's voice if he was a decent character
But he adds NOTHING positive to the film or to SW. (Honestly probably the most overrated sci-fi anyway)
Just because there are some vague similarities in the voice, that doesn't automatically make the character the same.

Jar Jar Binks wasn't hated because of the accent, but because his entire character AND the accent was played for laughs by exploiting stereotypes. You could have switched out the accent for a regular american one, and he would STILL have been hated.Raizo wrote...
It's like Bioware hasn't learnt anything from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Now ME3 has it's very own Jar Jar Binks. As someone who was born and grew up in the Caribbean I find this to be highly racist and offensive.
This isn't the case with Prothy, obviously. He isn't a character that is played for jokes, and neither is his accent. Absolutely NOTHING about him is stereotypical - quite the opposite. My theory on why he was given an african accent is because the culture of africa is old and powerful, and because it is the origin and cradle of mankind and the ancestral foundation of modern society, much like the Protheans laid the foundation of the current cycle of galactic civilization.
Also, Prothy's accent isn't Caribbean. If you really were Caribbean, you'd know.
THIS. SO DAMN MUCH.
I litterally could not agree anymore. I could probably try, but my head would explode.

In that hearing in ME2 there are at least 7 different Quarian accents. Most European, and few Eurasian and Middle Eastern.

His personal wiki has him listed as "Ian" in ME3. Given that games and movies use fake names for characters and projects, Prothean isn't a far jump from Ian. Besides, I've seen so much LOST, and I can spot that guy's voice anywhere. It's the same Ethiopian accent he used for Mr. Eko.

It was kind of like a stereotype of a Texan accent, but not rural southern.

Because a distinctive human/national accent on a alien species breaks the immersion.RiGoRmOrTiS_UK wrote...
seriously. what makes this accent any less appropriate for an alien race than an american accent?
It would be equally unfitting if it was a russian, french, etc. accent.

Bioware sent out some adds for voice actors in the Andromeda Galaxy but all the aliens there were fully booked.Xayoz wrote...

But seriously, almost every species in Mass Effect has human accents with the addition of added effects. The Prothean has the EXACT same voice system set up as the rest of them.

But we've heard distinctive human accents on characters before. Is your imersion broken when you hear Tali, K'al Reager, almost all of the Qurians, Miranda, or Garrus talk? They all have human accents. And before you try and claim that he's too distinctive and they all have filters, Prothy's voice has a filter similar to that of the Turians.

so is it ok that Garus has an American accent answer me that? why would it be wrong for the prothean to sound south African?
