I must be doing it wrong, because sentinels don't feel particularly tanky to me. IMO the class has always suffered from a lack of identity and hybrid tax. Someone tell me how to do it right and I might play them more often.

I think that's the thing about sentinels, they can do a bit of everything, I've seen some charge up close with assault rifles and their tech armour on all through the game...
That said, my Turian sentinel plays the role of the sniper. With an added 20% to headshot damage (along with lots of weapon damage increase) it can hurt the enemy badly. Then I have maxed overload and warp. I scope centurions and nemesis' and hit overload, then headshot them...works like a charm. Warp is not instantanious like overload, so I use it if I'm flanked up close, since the enemy will be staggered by the hit it'll give me the chance to realign my sight, plus it makes them suspectible to the point blank shot...
Tech armour...I have two ranks in it and occassionally use it when I'm crowded by a lot of powerful enemies and need the extra shield to get away, that said I don't activate it until then, because it slows down the recovery of overload and warp.
Hope that helps.

Jack of all trades master of none deal.........I quite like them through, never had an issue.

You can play fairly aggresive, defensive, tech or biotic based, or a combo....no wrong way to play it really

The whole jack-of-all-trades / master-of-none thing is misleading.  Since you can't max out all your skills by level 20 all characters are better off speciallizing in a subset of skills.  Sentinels just have a wider flavor of skills to choose from.

I've got a turian sentinel (lvl16ish) with passives maxed and overload maxed to chain and carrying just a scoped Tempest.  This allows him to:
-Spam overload due to the low cooldown. Just as fast as my engineer.  Love that overload works on barriers.
-Lay down very effective supressive and targeted fire.  I'm shocked at how little muzzle climb there is with the Tempest compared to ME2.  Maybe this is another turian race trait, but regardless it makes a scoped Tempest an effective weapon at every range, event taking out troopers far across the battlefield.
-Soak up lots of damage, with or without tech armor on.  This lets him get much closer to the front line than my engineer, giving them a bit of a support advantage over engineers.

I don't think anyone really has an issue with the Turian Sentinel. Its those of us Sentinel lovers who are stuck with the crappy human that are hurting.

Can't Tank on the higher difficulties and No Tech Abilities. It really hurts.

Title is misleading. Should change it and mention "Human sentinel".

Nothing wrong with the human sentinel, at least I don't think so and I prefer using her over my Turian.

This.

With their small shields, even the 25-40% DR is not even noticable on gold -> Leaving you as an absolutely gimped version of asari-adept.

Yes it doable on gold...anything honestly is with a good team carrying you, but you won't be doing them any favors by choosing an asari-adept without stasis and longer cooldowns aka Human Sentinel.

If I'd want to play an up-front, tankier class I could just play a Vanguard or Soldier I feel.

Also if you went 40% DR that means you have an -80% to power. If you're going to be weapon heavy why not use soldiers who have more life and shields.

what are you people on about? Turian Sentinels are tankier than anything that's not a raging krogan. And I'm pretty sure it's only -60% to power.

and you can only call vangaurds tanky if you really stretch the definition...

I run Turian as well for my Sent. Sniper rifle and either sub machine gun or heavy handgun for me.

Tech Armor IMO is only good for one thing: When you need to take a few shots while disabling or activating something. Otherwise, the penalties and benefits just don't match up enough to use constantly. Detonation just isn't worth the effort either, considering you can Overload and even Warp for more damage and quicker refresh (without any penalties).

I had the best game with a sentinel last night! it was so awesome, it was only the two of us(because the rest of our team left), they where level 4 and me being a level 12 engineer, we lasted till wave 10. It was the most bad ass MP experience i ever had, i love sentinels!

What is it about the class that makes it so underused?

The Sentinel is by no means weak. It commands the team with it walking-tank approach.
The turian sentinel is by far the most fantastic class.
Spam overlord with Avenger X or warp with Avenger X.

What's your view?

The Turian Sentinel is indeed fantastic. My first character to level 20. If you are playing a turian sentinel though you should really try out the Revenant when you get it. You'll feel like John Rambo.
