I mostly play Engineer and Vanguard. Both rock on Bronze and it's very easy to waste mobs without cover with a lvl 20 Quarian Engineer, even on Silver.

However, when it comes to Gold, my skills are being tested. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. In fact, I understand this game well enough to know for certain that I'm doing everything right. I know how and when to use my powers, but come on. Three or four Atlases each wave starting with the 5th. I don't have that many missiles, neither do my squaddies. And I lack the appropriate powers that would help me much. Cryo blast does nothing against shields and I didn't invest much in Incinerate. Teamwork? Right, like my Infiltrator squaddies, spamming Tactical Cloak and fragging mobs with their Widows, will do any good, once they run out of Cobra missiles.

The only possible explanations I see are these: either the game just doesn't want to provide me with strong enough weapons/mods/enhancers, or the Engineer is indeed not the best class to pair with Infiltrator or Adepts, if we talk Gold. I've been trying to get a Revenant or a Widow for ages, or at least the infra-red scope mod for sniper rifles, to be able to see through smoke. The Avenger does no good at all, the Mattock's ammo stock is too low. You can spam a trooper through your 4x scope all day long, aim for the head, waste a crapload of ammunition and MAYBE then he will actually die. But as soon as that happens, four Phantoms will be coming after you, two of them being cloaked btw.

Do you have any suggestions?

Put down your quarian and use a human. Quarian engineers are nice for tech bursts, not so nice for stripping defenses off an Atlas/turret/phantom etc.

Thanks for the advice, then I'll get Overload instead of Cryo blast. However, I'm not sure this will resolve my underpowered arsenal issue. It takes way too much time/resources to take down the weakest trooper, unless you're uber good at headshotting moving targets with a Mantis.

Agreed about the quarian - human engineers are more useful with overload (which is insanely good) and combat drone which will help keep you alive better than the turret. (Go for the shock evolution rather than the rockets) Its strange that the supposed tech race of mass effect are being dealt the short straw. It would also have been nice if we could pick our 3 powers from a class set rather than have them foisted on us.

Also recommend the pistol with scope - much better than a sniper rifle for the engineer. You'll get 200% cooldown reduction on your powers meaning they are always ready to fire.

I'm not used to your particular class, but when I'm playing gold I like a Krogan soldier, Asari Adept (usually me), and Salarian Infiltrator on the team. I don't care so much about the fourth spot as long as it's not a crazy/hyper vanguard.

Not sure about other class, but for engineer, use human engineer with max overload and incinerate. Put points to improve your power damage. Use weapons that will improve on recharge ability (I use Mattock V only or Phalanx X only with scope and extra damage so I can help teammates pick from far away). Engineers are best at defense stripping but they're also canon fodders (like me ^^). Use your pet drone (getting points into shock helps stagger enemies) to distract enemies leaving them open for teammates to attack them. It's best to stick with the group and strip the barriers of a phantom when an adept stasis while other rain fire on it. Take out the phantoms and engineers first as they can be a pain when you're surrounded by them. Supporting others is important. And spam those powers :D

Save cobras for wave 8 and above (use them when you see 2 atlases and few phantoms clustered together or when its an objective of eliminating the targets and they happened to be one of them plus you don't have much time). In earlier waves, where they are spread 1 or two, they can be strip down by your powers.

As for infiltrators, they're the heart of any team IMO. Cloak+revive is a life saver and they can snipe unaware enemies. I usually stick with the adept and help cover the flanks in case an enemy is coming. Always stick with the group and move in pairs. If you're swarmed by enemies, separate in pairs but not so far so that you can revive each other. If an infiltrator's down, provide cover while others revive him. He's an important part of the team. Always check your corners and surroundings for enemies coming in from flanks so that you won't get cornered.

Playing as engineers won't get a lot of points like infiltrators or vanguards, but they are a valuable support as do adepts/sentinels. Surviving together is the best part of gold rounds. You'll punch in the air when the full extraction achievement pops :)
Hope that helps ^^

human engineer all the way, i have overload maxed, focusing on damage & 1 chain reaction, rocket combat drone, lvl 4 incinerate, and maxed fitness. only using the phalanx pistol with power & thermal clip mods so i have 200% recharge bonus and continually leading my team which has asari, krogan, and salarian infiltrator.

Asari adept + sniper(not necessarily infiltrator, other classes with a decent sniper rifle are also fine)

Asari adept for phantoms and sniper for major dps.

You don't really need cobra missiles for atlas. Just spam attack it and it will be down pretty soon.

Asari adept, salarian infiltrator (pref with widow). Anything else is fine although other defense strippers like turian sentinel and human engie are good

If you have an infiltrator with the rank 6 cloak evo (sniper) have him solo the atlas with a mantis/widow, it does insane amounts of damage. Going into gold make sure everyone has atleast 1 of each item.
Vital- SAVE YOUR ROCKETS
I can't stress this enough.
I don't start popping rockets until wave 7+ when things get overwhelming, and try to use them against paired atlases to get the most bang.
Also make sure you have fitness leveled somewhat, it helps even on casters. :3
If you need any more help/tips message me.

You can make any class work in gold, but this is what works for me:

-Human engineer. Great defence stripper, decent CC. Equip with a light but powerful gun for maximum CD. I like Carnifex or even my Mattock X.
- Turian sentinel. Again, decent CC and defence stripper. You can really feel the extra survivability out on gold. I use to roll with the Mattock X, but recently switched to the Widow for more lethality and loving it.
- Asari adept. Spamming stasis bubbles all day, every day. Phalanx X.
- Infiltrator with Widow. Cloak for damage boost and running away from stuff.

Thanks for the advice, but this thread is outdated. Since I've maxed out my Infiltrator and gotten a Widow, Bronze has become a child's play for me, and Gold is the only challenging mode left.

Okay first get rid of the
Quarian. Use the human and max out
Incinerate and overload. You can go for single damage overload or chain. That doesn't really matter since they both work well on Gold and Silver, but you must take neural shock. That is a must.

Okay besides that what do you need for gold? First get an Infiltrator and make sure he has the Widow and knows how to use it with cloak. Thats how you deal with the Atlas without the rockets. Oh and try and save all of rockets for rounds 10 and 11. If your sniper is doing job right you shouldn't need them until then anyway.

Second get an adept Asari. Stasis will save your life. Nuff said there.

So yeah the only classes you really need are Infiltrator  and adept. The other two classes can be whatever you want as long as you have overload somewhere in there you guys should be fine.

On a side note Vanguards, adepts, and engineers work really well together. Stasis then charge for a biotic explosion, those can put the Atlas down pretty quick btw(biotic explosions I mean, not stasis then charge), or overload and charge. Both combos kill phantoms pretty fast.

So yeah the above is not the only way to do it. Its just the best way I've found so far.

Volus Adept, their Biotic Wind sweeps enemies away. Best class in game.

the tempest is great for stripping shields off an atlas it takes allot of rounds but you have over 500 just hip fire from cover till their gone and bring a heavy pistol (carnifex if you can) and you'll still have 200% recharge (but 185% with carnifex)

Well, I have a Quarian engineer as well and I have the same problems. However, this is just against Cerberus I'm thinking that the Quarian cryo explosion will be very needed against reaper husks. What good is stasis going to be if banshees can biotic charge through the bubble and human husks rushing in from every direction? I still believe they gave certain races their set powers for a reason because some will be better against certain enemies than others in the final game.

I love my Quarian engineer (level 17, mostly thanks to getting five or six of her in spectre packs). I've yet to even give silver a try, but since I now feel very comfortable in bronze with a half decent team I plan on testing silver tonight.
Shame to hear that the Quarian may not be useful on gold, I'm a huge fan of cryo explosions :).

Is it possible to get 200% recharge with the Carnifex by the way? It's at 150% for me if I recall correctly.

Husks are instantly killed by any skill that lifts them off their feet so
Shockwave
Pull
Throw
Lift

as well as biotic explosions (which the above will also trigger on those who have been hit by warp within 10 seconds) will also instanty kill husks as well as majorly damage them

if you use the n7 typhoon with a human soilder with adreline rush you dont have to reload !!!!!!!        plus it can instanly recharge your sheilds ,  keep firing til you are low on your clip then use adreline rush it will fully reload your clip for you if you only carry this one gun and have it slightyl upgraded your powers will recharge before you run out of ammo in your clip, thus  no reloading using this with the thermal ammo pack aswell and bye bye reloading ,
