I notice that in the description of Nova it says "Barrier strength determines blast intensity".
What I want to know is that is it based on the percentage of your barrier or your actual numerical barrier strength?
I'm wondering if I upgrade my fitness for increased barrier, will that increase the force and damage of Nova ?
Nova and barrier strength

Good question.
...I have no idea.

i think it's based on your barrier number. at start

Good question indeed. Maybe a dev can shine some light on this.

I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to check, just risky.
Bronze, get close to a target, nova at max shields (from behind to preserve shields). Take note of health lost.
Bronze, get close to a target, wear down shields, then nova. Take note of health lost.
I've always "guessed" that it's based on current shields...which is why speccing into Barrier Charge is optimum.

That's my guess too. Yesterday I finally got to play the MP.
At some point, I was able to fully evolve charge and I chose the Barrier option. I left Nova at rank 3. I can't honestly say anything about the health on enemies, but I certainly noticed a louder "boom" for Nova. I started it using more often than before, even when it wasn't necessary

I would like to know about that as well. Can the last Charge talent (the one that increases barriers by 50%) increase Nova damage?

I think is based on current barriers, because going nova with almost no barriers does 0 damage (but staggers).
Is one of my tactics when in a huge group shot and pick weakened targets and to do damage do a 1/3 nova or 1/5, stagger them and run the **** out.

Manveer answered my question about this which is:
damage * (current shield/max shield)
damage * (current shield/max shield)

Did a test on silver and I think the damage dealt of Nova is based on the percentage of your remain barrier. Here's what I did:
For Nova, I went for more charge force and damage at lv.4, and 50% barrier cost at lv.5, and 100% more damage to shield/barrier/armor at lv.6, and my fitness at lv.5 only. My plan was to test the damage of Nova and then upgrade fitness to lv.6 for 25% more health and barrier, and then test it again.
Before fitness upgrade, my nova charge did about half the health of assault troopers. After the upgrade, the damage is still the same, about half the health of assault troopers. Therefore I conclude that the damage of nova is based on the percentage of your barrier, not the numerical number.
On an interesting side not, I have the 50% barrier cost evolution of the skill and I assumed that each Nova cost 50% of my maximum barrier. If I have less than 50% of barrier left, then it will deplete it for a less powerful Nova. Also I will be able to perform 2 Nova in a row with maximum possible damage if I don't get hit in the mean time. After the test, I just discovered that this is not the case. Whenever I chain 2 Nova in a row, the second Nova does significant less damage than the first one. I think that the damage of Nova is based on the current remaining percentage of your barrier regardless of your lv.4 evolution.
The 50% barrier cost evolution is not as powerful as I originally thought......

@Elecbender : partially true - he said it figures out barrier % first. Basically it uses your barriers to determine how much % to cut Nova damage by. Full Barriers (regardless of the number) would do 100% nova damage. Anything less, would end up doing, of course, less.
That 50% barrier use nova upgrade is survival vs pure damage. No one should take it thinking it'll up your damage. Even 'if' a second nova follow up was a little more damage then the other upgrade (which its not, its actually less dmg) you'd have to use nova 'twice' in a row which would take longer.
