It`ll make the game more tearjerking. That cutscene in the demo is quite tearjerking.

I think its a social commentary on the BSN. They're calling us children.

Hack writing is the cause. They're going for cheap and manipulative cryfests from the Talimancers of the world. For Dragon Age 3, they're going to have an emotionally engaging scene where a puppy is tortured and then killed. Cheap and manipulative.

Any attempt to make you feel anything that you didn't feel before watching/playing/listening to something is "manipulative".

Bioware clearly has a fetish for kids.

The death of the child is apparently a representation of the people Shepard cannot save from the Reapers.

Cheap, shallow, manipulative, call it whatever you want, but for me personally the scene was pretty good. It wasn't over the top, just enough to tug slightly.

Seriously, there's the child in the demo, the little girl in the trailer and now there's another child escaping with its mother in the extended trailer. though that one gets to survive. At this rate, I'm fully expecting to see the destroyed earth populated only by children. Children suffering from terminal illness in an orphanage. And when you get there, the side quests will involve crying children asking you to rescue their lost puppies from the reapers. Said puppies will be flayed alive just as you reach them, so they can ram down your throat just how high the stakes are. It's intellectual and emotional laziness and I expected better from Bioware.

Humans react emotionally when we see children hurt or about to be hurt.. It should have been there from the beginning. ME 1 should have had kids of all races. We just never see them.

I would give my favorite grenade launcher to watch Wrex play catch the varren with his kid hehe..

I thought the same thing when I first saw it. I also thought it was unrealistic, what do any kids do when there is an emergency, run to the nearest adult. Then they get behind them on them or hold them.

It was well done, but a bit contrived and somewhat manipulative. It did grab me though. Even as I knew I was being baited, I wanted nothing more in the world than to Kill the reapers.

10 year olds like the one shown in that clip would have been on top of Shepards back holding on for dear life.

For some reason I immediately think of those horrifying little creatures called "children" in the old republic.

Please god tell me they don't look anywhere close to that in the final game..

I think it would have been even more emotional, if the child in the shuttle would have clamped onto the legs of his mother, seeking for shelter, while even the mother can't protect it.

But somehow...yes. It seems a bit like someone said:"It needs to be more emotional! Spam the children!"

It's a bit shallow, but I don't really mind about it.

The lack of visible children is because Humanity took the advice of the 21st Century visionary who foresaw the reaper threat. This Visionary was also known as Antoine Dodson, who told Humanity to:

"Hide yo' kids, hide yo' wife and hide yo' husband cos' they reapin' everybody out here"

This man also foresaw the Collector threat, so he can be trusted, he said:

"They're climbin' in yo' windows and snatchin' yo' people up, tryna' reap them"

Bioware wanted to show us children do in fact exist in the Mass effect universe. "Look! there's a child! They aren't just a myth!"

This. Also, statistically speaking, children will most likely exist 100+ years in the future.

I'd imagine its meant to make you empathize with whats happening in the plot, for instance if a child was in danger you would have to be some kind of cold **** to not save it
