I just wanted to lend my support to Jennifer and to Bioware. I found her writing to be just fine. It is sad that those who did not crossed the Rubicon and wrote a lot of trash. Arguing a point is one thing. Name calling is another. Lying to attempt to destroy someone's reputation is even worse. That sort of thing reminds me of the dark side of junior high school. Thank you, Bioware for speaking up for your crew.

The fact that anyone thinks that anything Mrs. Hepler said or did even remotely justify this kind of behavior is saddening.  I'm really sorry that she's having to endure these kinds of attacks.  No game is worth going out of your way to hurt someone's feelings.  Period.

To the people engaging in this immature and disgraceful behavior, just what is it that you think you are accomplishing?  Do you think that by subjecting a Bioware employee to this kind of abuse  that somehow Bioware is going to make catoring to your taste a priority? All your doing is justifying them not listing to you with this.  And I'm saying this a player who desperatly wanted the Dragon Age franchise to continue in the vien of Baldur's Gate myself.  But why the hell should Bioware make anything for you if your going to treat them like this?

I have figured out the rules!

1. If you say something 5 years ago, you still feel the same way! Because no one evolves, grows, changes or modifies their opinions or thoughts in any way! Ever!
2. If I am upset with the product of a company, I can target any employee as being solely responsible because why? BECAUSE! Clearly that opinion they had five years ago is responsible for the product I am dissatisfied by. There can be no other logical explanation. I am going to pick a random employee. Epler! You are a DEMONIC ENTITY. Stanley, you like to consume innocent babies. AND PUPPIES. I am going to call you people every night to profess my hatred of what you did to Bioware!
3. I can call you a fat sow, tell you to kill yourself, call your house and harass you, but if you tell me to be more polite, you are being tyrannical, fascist and sweeping ALL criticism under a rug! After months of having to listen to my clearly mature panning of the employee who ruined all gaming ever, if said employee finally makes any snarky response, she is being immature! And should kill herself for what upset me in the first place! Resurrect herself and DO IT AGAIN for the snark!
4. If I didn't like something, it sucked. Objectively. Because I am the universe. Anyone who disagrees is a brainwashed fanboi/girl. Anyone who agrees, but disagrees with the way I have criticized it is also a fanboi/girl. And they suck! They should also kill themselves.
5. If I am a sanitation engineer, I really need to like poop. If I am a pediatrician, I really need to like kids. Because you know that is the most important thing. Since Ms. Hepler doesn't like every shooter, RTS, archeologist doing cartwheels game out there, she is totally unqualified to write anything. She is also unqualified to write anything if I don't like what she writes. Because I am the universe.

A small part of my brain just said- oh well, there was plenty of legitimate concern which could have been expressed politely. Someone could have said - Hey Jennifer, your comment about skipping combat worries me because...NO! What am I doing? No! You ruined everything that was wonderful in the universe Jennifer! HOW DO YOU LIVE WITH YOURSELF?!!

You make it sound like I have attacked her, all I have done is state exactly that, my argument and for my trouble I have been disregarded as a troll.

Yes. That is exactly my intention. As long as you defend the critics that went too far by bullying, personal attacks and insults, I'll keep making this point. You see, it is not about the critics being right or not. It is about the way they have packaged it. And that should never be tolerated. No matter the reasons behind it. ;)

I'm happy to see Bioware and EA formally support Jen. The attacks aimed at her have been nothing short of appalling and the people attacking her should be ashamed of themselves. Hopefully this will finally die down and people who don't want to support Bioware or EA can move the hell on with their lives.

This.

Really nice to see you come out and make a statement about this, the donation as well. I also concur with Jim Sterling's assessment of how this reflects on gamers as a group, really discouraging, although to be honest I've seen similar things from music, film and even literature fans before.

The sexism and homophobia in regards to "critiques" of DA/DA2's writing isn't just about people's reaction to the in-game material, it includes claims like "They only did this to appeal to girls and gays!" assuming that 1) this is true (because both are monolithic entities, dunchaknow) and 2) that if this were true, it would be problematic.

I won't argue that such claims haven't been made, but don't you think you're going too far by suggesting that any criticism of Bioware's writing is rooted in sexism and homophobia?

And gays and women certainly aren't monoliths, but marketers -- rightly or wrongly -- make generalizations about those two groups all the time in order to sell to them. It certainly feels as if Bioware is being guided by marketing considerations when it attempts to broaden its target audience. Perhaps, that's why Bioware hired Hepler, although what they saw in M.I.T.H. completely eludes me.

I have no support for cheer me up loli-pop time. She didn't deserve personal spiteful comments, but it should be noted bioware that something should change. Suppressing opinions and moving towards a broader market has a good number of previous hardcore fans at arms. It's gotten to this point, do you really want people to take it farther?

Broader marketing isn't the way to go. Not with passionate fans like this.

You want to know why? Because your justification is no justification, and you hardly need a mod to tell you that. You also, given what you wrote (with the childish insults thrown in and claims of Orwellian control), probably don't deserve a response from anyone official anyway.

Yes, because no human being deserves to be bullied, attacked or insulted. It was done to the point until she snaps. Those guys must feel proud of themselves, don't you think so?

They should respond by continuing to support the behaviors of privileged gamers?

You might as well have put "OR ELSE" at the end of your post.

Not simply because they were not polite, but because they singled out a single target and refused to treat her with the inherint respect and dignity that she deserves as a human being.  Plenty of posters, myself included, have criticised DA2 and Bioware's recent direction.  We've found honest fault with it.  But we've never gone out of our way to strip anyone at Bioware of their dignity.   We've tried to approach them with the utmost respect and love.  Do we sometimes fall short?  Sure.  But we apologise and try to avoid letting it happen again.  So hopefully, our opinions are worth hearing.  Anything expressed in hatered is not.

Thats it, I'm done, peace.  Nobody can seriously believe that criticisms are rendered invalid because they werent also being nice while saying them.  Its asinine and insulting.  That being said, Hepler, as previously stated, didn't exactly try to calm it down, she stoked the fires.  Not to mention another BioWare employee telling someone on twitter they were a "****ing moron."  This'll probably get removed, oh well.

I never said I defended the "bullies", infact I have said that the insults were rude and unneeded. I do not defend the attackers, but I will not defend Mrs. Hepler's and Mr. Flynn's (I think it was a Mr. Flynn anyway) comments on the day.

So... make games for our ("our" being very vague here) tastes or we'll be even bigger jerks to your employees in the future? Your negotiation tactics need some work. That sounds more like extortion than a request.

Criticisms are rendered invalid when they come from someone who can do nothing else but attack a person viciously and personally.

So, bye.

Well, your post in the screenshot qualified as asinine and insulting - as opposed to the entirely reasonable expectation that people with criticisms behave respectfully and with a modicum of decency when voicing those opinions. As for the person who got called a f---ing moron, gee whiz, wasn't it the idiot who made the cancer comment? I don't know why he deserves extra-special niceness in response. Goodbye - you won't be missed. And don't forget the tinfoil hat in case the Thought Police try to mess with your mind.

I didn't find out about this whole fiasco until a few hours ago.

I don't agree with Ms. Hepler's views nor her methodology on writing (She thinks Twilight is awesome? Ugh.), but at the same time, this vitriol is completely uncalled for and whoever did this crap should be ashamed of themselves.

At any rate, I will say that everyone is a tough guy behind a screenname and a keyboard.
