Reddit's behavior got way out of hand with the phone calls and threats and so on, but you can't blame them. She's earned a lot of dislike over Dragon Age 2's writing, of course they're going to call her out on it. It's the internet. You either grow a tougher skin or leave. Personally I'm not a fan of her work at all. Really don't think someone who doesn't play games should be writing for them.

When I don't like a game, I **** for a few minutes, take it back, trade it in, or buy a new one. I don't call parts of the dev/writing team "fat", call them at home, etc. But that's just me. <_<

Nobody should expect to be immune to criticism. This situation got out of hand, but you can't expect everyone to suck up to you.

Well...while I agree that may not have been the best response....when someone personally attacks you like that do you always act civil? Because I don't. Sometimes people don't think before they speak...and sometimes people forget that these guys at Bioware ARE people too.

I'll preface this by saying that the personal attacks are inexcusable and completely trollish.

But, its the internet. You have anonymous ****s. DON'T FEED THE TROLLS. And yet thats exactly what Aaron Flynn and even Hepler did with likewise trollish responses. Justified? Sure. Did it make them feel good? Sure.Just as much as the trolls felt good in attacking Hepler. But they're just sinking to the same level of immature BS as the instigators. Its not like they're making some off the cuff remark in person in the heat of the moment- they're typing the stuff out, both sides have time to think about what they're typing before they respond.

And I don't understand why the hullabaloo about this all of a sudden. /v/ has been going after Hepler since before DA2 came out, more specifically since this promo video came out over a year ago. Did they not see this before now? Its been kind of hard to miss if you do any sort of reading about DA2.

The reddit post was very recent as was Jen's joining of twitter. The severe abuse began only a few days ago.

As for "feeding the trolls," I guess some of us just got tired of complacency and enabling through silence.

THIS. That kind of crap has driven me from this social network which used to be an awesome place to be.

All this ridiculous drama over a few mediocre twitter trolls. If only you devoted this much attention to your QA.

No but it would be nice to be treated like a freaking human being. I don't walk up to someone irl that has done something I don't like, tell them they are a **********, and expect a professional response.

Fat is NOT cristicism. Sorry.

No, I do blame them. She is one member of a team of writers and she is the ONLY ONE who gets this treatment. It's wrong.

This. I could see ****ing on the forums sure whatever. But insulting the writer and calling her fat?

Do they just have no life? Are they that pathetic and insecure about their so called pinnacle of gaming experience being lessened? It's time to go outside or find another game folks if you really think its that serious. Or get some help.

You want to b****/flame the writing? Fine whatever. But doing that to the writer is where you crossed the line.

It is actually. Not really relevant to writing for video games, but it is.

You are completely missing my point.  It's not her professionalism that is irking me.  She could have said "I disagree with you stronlgy, you mother*******."  And I would not have had a problem with it.  Of all of the unprofessional things to say, she chose to say "They are all just jealous."  The only people that say that, are people who believe others are likely jealous of them.  In other words, arrogant, vain, shallow.

I'm not missing your point, I'm tearing it down and now you're backpedaling. You mentioned her professionalism first, not me, so yes, it was a point in whatever argument you're trying and failing to make.

Your only 'point' here is not a point at all but essentially a name-call wrapped up in wanna-be-high-ground-hyprocrisy. You're calling her "vain, arrogant, and shallow".

That about sum it up? Speaking of trolls...

Actually I think you'll find that this was 100% Reddit's doing. More specifically the /r/gaming subreddit.
People at /v/ have nothing but kind words for Jennifer Hepler and the fine folks working at bioware.

Good on you Bioware. Soon as I have some spare money, I'll be donating. Not many employers are willing to do the right thing for their folks. As for her reply? Unprofessional, probably but you know what? When people breach the social contract of distance between dev and gamer, when they find her personal information and harass her at home? All bets are off. Rock on Jennifer, and thank you again Bioware.

I'm not to sure about what happened apart from what i've read on the dtoid thing, but it's just sick. Whether you're a fan of her writing or not, this kind of treatment is just utter BS.

If i'm bein honest i wish she would reopen her twitter account, as though she was giving those haters a two fingered salute.

Down with this sort of thing! (in a father Ted voice)

This is just despicable.

I mean, I think she's a godawful writer that shouldn't even work in the industry. I also think that Biowares writing as a whole has degraded so much over the years and most new Bioware titles aren't even hardcore RPGs. But I don't critisize her appearance, if you want to call someone out don't use petty insults.

She's not the reason why Bioware is currently in decline. You can blame the whole company for pandering to an audience that probably doesn't hasn't even picked up a CRPG before.

I'm glad the moderators of /r/gaming shut down the thread and made a new thread saying why (a thread that was filled with reason instead of blind hate like the first one).

Her reply was also extremely unprofessional to be honest. Still doesn't warrant that type of treatment though, it was probably a desperate lash back.

You're right, I mentioned that she was both unprofessional and deluded.  Then I said her unprofessionalism wasn't what irks me.

Both are true.  She was unprofessional, but that's fine with me.  I think everyone that attacked her, called her names, and harrassed her by calling her fat or 'the cancer that is killing bioware' is an idiot.  I'm just saying that her most-quoted response was, unfortunately, almost equally disappointing.  She's probably a great person and a hard worker and all that, but in that one tweet, she came off as pretty arrogant.  Probably a moment of weakness, but anyone who calls other people jealous even for the most ridiculous stuff, is just cocky.

Ive seen various references to this story, but not the story itself. What happened?

In a nutshell, someone took an interview/forum post of hers from ages ago (over a year?) and doctored it to include things she'd never said, then used it to fuel a hate campaign. But you can find more with a basic google search if you want the whole sordid story.

That's ridiculous.  What is wrong with people?

Oh but I do blame them and they deserve every inch of derision they get.  Disliking a game or even feeling "betrayed by a franchise"  doesn't justify the abuse particularly when people have been posting criques of the game for nearly a year now.  They had a forum for constructive criticism and no one has been silencing their voices.  It also doesn't justify harassment.  Their actions were vile and deplorable and hurtful.  The old adage about sticks and stones is a false one for there are many who have committed suicide over hateful taunts because words wound.

Also, the nonsense about the it being the "internet" is just that.  Nonsense.  The internet can now be rightfully considered a public sphere.  It's no longer a place for just us nerds and geeks; the internet is essential to how we communicate and live out daily lives.  What happened to Jennifer Hepler on Twitter was the equivalent of a crowd of people surrounding her on the street and taunting her.  It was gross.

I still think Aaryn Flynn put it best. Good to see her getting some more official backup, though. Some people are just a waste of oxygen, and the cretins who've been involved in her harassment definately qualify as such.

What I find funny is that she even responded.

This is the internet people. Yes, it's terrible that people are 'bullying' her and calling her names. But this is the internet where this happens on a daily basis. She shouldn't have let the trolls get to her and just deleted the account.

But instead he made the problem even worse.

It's awesome you guys released an official statement. The internet is so full of swarming bullies. The moment they smell blood in the water it is just awful. This kind of stuff and the comments people were making about her personally actually made me physically ill. I hope she's feeling better today. It must be great to have such a nice supportive team to work with.

Reddit is really a disgusting site. Did you know that they didn't ban links to child porn until a week ago?

These are the kinds of people attack Ms. Hepler for her writing. And it's not her lack of experience or the fact that she dislikes video games, but because she's a homely overweight woman succeeding in a field usually dominated by white men. They can't accept that, so they choose to lash out and libel her.

When is tort law going to catch up to the internet? These people spreading lies should be sued.
