But just what can Bioware do to appease these people?

Stop the censorship of BioWare forums and be more open to discussion with people who happen to not like the game?  That'd go pretty far in terms of smoothing things over.  Censoring whatever you don't want to hear results in turning a distraught fan into an angry former customer.

What censorship? Cause from my time here they've been very tolerant of letting discussions criticising them stay open so long as the discussion is civil.  Heck this thread is an example of that.

Do you have links to unjustly locked threads?

Look 7 posts up from yours.  It was a picture of a post before it got deleted.  It was critical of Bioware but civil and thought out.  It actually related to THIS topic, too.

Referring to the moderation staff as 12 year olds on power trips is not civil.

And, as previously mentioned, it was off-topic aside from a brief tangent referring to the situation in question. So let's drop this tangent.

I'm just saying, if you want to improve customer relations, there's a great starting point.

"But he said something inappropriate about the moderation staff."

So lead by example and confront the issue in its entirety rather than delete it.  Suddenly the picture becomes completely one-sided in favor of Bioware, and you'll garner a lot more support overall as a result.

Censorship? Nah. If there was then as a critic I would be the first one to have noticed it. In my experience you can post just about anything here as long as one keeps it civil. I did get aggravated a couple of times. That wasn't smart and entirely my fault. If I don't provoke and post the same things then I even get some discussion going from time to time. That's neat.

Nope, sorry.

Firstly:
Bullying is an act of repeated aggressive behavior in order to intentionally hurt another person, physically or mentally.

Repeatedly engaging in the act is what makes it bullying. Jennifer was repeatedly targetted. She did not repeatedly insult the fans. Basic terminology.

Secondly:
I am not sure how one responds in a "productive manner" to someone calling you a farm animal and telling you to kill yourself. Do you start a discussion on methodology? Debate the theology of suicide? Ask for tips? Tell them they have a point and you will consider it?
Seriously.

Personally I'm baffled as to how people get her being bullish from comments made in exasperation after being bombared by morons.

Me neither. The only productive thing I could do would be turn around and leave because obviously further contact is pointless and will just result in me exploding.

The subset of gamers' reaction to Jennifer is so pathetic and very disgusting. Personally I believe her argument regarding "fast-forward option" is a failed one. But she has her right to have her own opinion regarding the matter and no-one should have responded to her in disgusting manner because of that.

Also I have to say that I was surprised and very disappointed to see Aaryn Flynns' "Whatever, f***ing moron" twitter reply, because I have a respect for BW employees for "who they are" and "what they do". In whatever the case, situation is giving this kind of low level response is not worthy to their positions.

I like to request from every BW employee to not to act like this in the future. I respect you guys/ girls for "who you are" and "what you do", no idiotic gamer can change that. But this kind of responses can. There is a saying among my local community "The dog thinks it can flat the mountain by barking at it. But the mountain won't get flat". So be the "mountain".

Why is it only bullying when fans do it?

Instead of responding to criticism in a productive manner to open dialogue and maybe change minds- BioWare employee Hepler insulted critical fans by calling them unemployed virgins. That is bullying.

Instead of responding to criticism in a productive manner to open dialogue and maybe change minds- BioWare employee Flynn told a critical fan to perform a sexual act on himself. That is bullying.

I certainly hope the $1000 donated came out of these two employees' paychecks. They are just as guilty as the fans. Set the example- fans have nothing to lose by voicing their opinions. But your company's reputation is tarnished by being brazenly hypocritical for allowing your own employees to bully fans while complaining about the inverse.

They were responding to a drooling mob.  On their personal twitter accounts.  If the ignorant sheep can't deal with someone having a human reaction to their insults, then perhaps the ignorant sheep should stop attempting to be internet bullies.

Thank you for your suggestion, bsphil, but I think we'll determine for ourselves how we deal with our forum. For the time being, we'll maintain the status quo, Moderation-wise.

Alright, what she did was sexual harrassment. Does that change anything? No. It's just as wrong and not excusable.

It seems that too many people are upset that we are moderating this thread, in their opinion, overly harshly.

This thread is here to show our support for Jennifer Hepler as a valued employee of BioWare. It is not to discuss the quality of our games, or the moderation on these forums or to fight between posters. THAT is why posts have been deleted. As with all our forums and thread you are welcome to discuss this topic in a calm, sensible manner within the Site Rules. If posts are made that are deemed off topic by staff or moderators, we will continue to moderate the thread as we do with all threads on these forums.

So if you want to voice your support for Jennifer and/or BioWare, great. If, for some reason you have the opposing viewpoint that we should not support Jennifer, post your argument in a rational manner. If you want to disucss our moderation policies you can start a new thread in the Off Topic forum or send me a private message.

Now, back to the subject at hand.

I haven't read through all 40 pages of posts on this thread but after reading the article on Gamespot, not only do I want to let Jennifer (and all of the Bioware crew) know how much I appreciate their creations - but also to point out, as a gamer for the past 30 years or so, the one thing I really hate about a lot of the games is the endless combat! An "Auto" fight, skip button or diplomatic option would be VERY welcome to me. I gave up on The Witcher because of the repetitive combat even though I loved the game, I wound the difficulty settings on Oblivion to the easiest possible to get through the combat as quickly as possible and I got sick of the seemingly random skirmishes in Dragon Age (although some of the big battles were awesome!). I'm looking for engaging stories that I feel part of. When I want mindless combat, I load up Postal 2 for some laughs! :)

You are more noble than I am.

I will resort to snark. Unfortunately as a person completely lacking in wit, it would fall flat. Then I would mope for days. It would be sad.

The thing people need to realize that if Jennifer had lashed out to a critic, they would have had a point in expecting an apology. She lashed out at people who were saying some pretty over the top crazy stuff. She didn't single out anyone.

As for her colleague. The people you work with, especially over a period of time become like family. There are still a lot of people who will feel all gnawed up inside if they stayed silent while death threats were being leveled at their colleague because it would have been unprofessional to do so. Sure, it is not the best thing to do in a volatile situation but what they did was at least human. I cannot say that about people who just resorted to barn yard animals and imploring she killed herself for what she said 6 years ago/for what they perceieve to be her writing skills.

Wow, quite sad. Why do people take these things so seriously. That scares me. I love games, and I think Bioware is one of the best game devs out there. But, if they make something I don't like, I won't go crazy. The fact that some people feel the need to lash out like this shows that they must not have been hugged enough as children.

I hope all the best to Jennifer.

To the people who harassed and threatened her, just wow. Over a video game? Get some priorities, get a life, I weep for humanity sometimes.

I would like to wish Jennifer Hepler the best and strength with everything that she does. All the bioware staff has made remarkable games far beyond most I've played, even if I didn't enjoy every aspect. Original ideas are just as important as old traditions. I just wish the bullying that the anonymity of the internet supports would stop, Just ignoring it and being a "mountain" can sometime be as bad as "good people letting bad things happen."

Regardless of picking people out, she represented her company. She made a statement like she did, WHILST she was getting hateful messages, and expects for children to not act like children? Are you serious? And to recify the situation she could've made her twitter private. She may be human but in the end, she deleted her Twitter because the comments got too much. Many people in the public eye know now not to "feed the trolls", she was just vindictive and expected nothing to happen.

Doesn't mean the abuse was less wrong. But it's quite clear she provoked them.

Rationalization and denial are sad things.
