Her reply was also extremely unprofessional to be honest. Still doesn't warrant that type of treatment though, it was probably a desperate lash back.

I thought playing the gender card was incredibly unprofessional. There's plenty of women working in games. The majority of people who have a problem with her take offence at the quality of her writing, not her vagina.

I wholeheartedly agree that all of the attacks on her were reprehensible, but I also feel that it's fair to say that her quote "I just figure they're jealous that I get to have both a vagina AND a games industry job, and they can't get either." was incredibly unprofessional and somewhat deluded. "They are all just jealous" is the most shallow, vain retort a person could possibly have, even to personal attacks. The people that attacked her are idiots, but her response did not show much humility or insight.

I think she hit it on the head. She has power they don't have, and is a *gasp* woman to boot! She doesn't have to be 'humble'. Getting into the industry as a woman is hard, and staying there (specially for as long as she has) is harder. More power to her.

Hit it on the head?! That is a terribly sexist and double standard way to look at it. Lets rework some things here. " I just figure they're jealous that I get to have both a dick AND a games industry job, and they cant get either". Thats right ladies, you need to get laid, quit being so bitter.
See what I did there? Nothing about what she said in regards to her job and genitals should be looked over or disregarded because if a man said that, it wouldnt be tolerated.

On an unrelated field, I want to comment about the DLC for ME 3. I was looking over how Action figures, gaming peripherals, pre order bonus's (one of which includes a squad member and only comes with the special edition) and finally playing a demo for a unrelated game. I just have to say as a customer this is a very shady practice and not what I have come to expect from a company I've supported for almost 10 years. Getting nickel and dimed in Mass Effect 2 was bad enough but 3 isn't even out yet and the known DLC for is just too much. I know Bioware can be better than this. All of this greedy practices worry me.

Both are true.  She was unprofessional, but that's fine with me.  I think everyone that attacked her, called her names, and harrassed her by calling her fat or 'the cancer that is killing bioware' is an idiot.  I'm just saying that her most-quoted response was, unfortunately, almost equally disappointing.  She's probably a great person and a hard worker and all that, but in that one tweet, she came off as pretty arrogant.  Probably a moment of weakness, but anyone who calls other people jealous even for the most ridiculous stuff, is just cocky.

This is just the tone of my first post. A "cocky" woman. How dare. lmao

Proof, there it is.

Oh but I do blame them and they deserve every inch of derision they get.  Disliking a game or even feeling "betrayed by a franchise"  doesn't justify the abuse particularly when people have been posting criques of the game for nearly a year now.  They had a forum for constructive criticism and no one has been silencing their voices.  It also doesn't justify harassment.  Their actions were vile and deplorable and hurtful.  The old adage about sticks and stones is a false one for there are many who have committed suicide over hateful taunts because words wound.

Also, the nonsense about the it being the "internet" is just that.  Nonsense.  The internet can now be rightfully considered a public sphere.  It's no longer a place for just us and nerds and geeks; the internet is essential to how we communicate and live out daily lives.  What happened to Jennifer Hepler on Twitter was the equivalent of a crowd of people surrounding her on the street and taunting her.  It was gross.

People do know that Reddit isn't the cause of this right?

A quick google search of the comment 'Hamburger Helper bioware' points it towards 4chans video game board, /v/. The same ones that apparently flooded the forums when DA2 released and the same people who lowered DA2s metacritic score to 1.

Reddit's behavior got way out of hand with the phone calls and threats and so on, but you can't blame them. She's earned a lot of dislike over Dragon Age 2's writing, of course they're going to call her out on it. It's the internet. You either grow a tougher skin or leave. Personally I'm not a fan of her work at all. Really don't think someone who doesn't play games should be writing for them.

When I don't like a game, I **** for a few minutes, take it back, trade it in, or buy a new one. I don't call parts of the dev/writing team "fat", call them at home, etc. But that's just me. <_<

Nobody should expect to be immune to criticism. This situation got out of hand, but you can't expect everyone to suck up to you.

No but it would be nice to be treated like a freaking human being. I don't walk up to someone irl that has done something I don't like, tell them they are a **********, and expect a professional response.

Fat is NOT cristicism. Sorry.

It is actually. Not really relevant to writing for video games, but it is.

Ok when has calling a person FAT ever been a criticism ???Abuse has never been OK . EVER !
Calling her at home ? NOT OK ! Stalking her on the forums/twitter/etc ?? NOT OK !!Telling her to kill herself ?? NOT OK !! For those of you wanting to argue about what she said in response. I would have said FAR worse had it been me.

here I will quote some things people should remember and think about.

"Judge not lest Ye be judged and found wanting "
"If you don't have nothing nice to say , Don't say anything at all"

I don't mean to sound overly negative, but do you guys really think this is going to help? All this "anti hepler" campaign really amounts to is a few weirdos on the internet telling each other that she sucks and than spamming her public profiles. This response seems disproportional to the problem, and I don't think it's going to accomplish much more than letting the perpetrators on 4chan and reddit's gaming boards know that they're getting to you, and if the trolls smell blood, things are just going to get worse. This "support Hepler" campaign may have good intentions, but all it's going to do is feed the trolls.

fantastic response; thank you, bioware.

and to those of you who condemn ms. hepler's response: you may find it irresponsible, but keep it to yourself. bringing it in here implies that she was in any way responsible for the disgusting actions of the bullying masses. this woman was bombarded with constant hate for days and even called at her house. how would you react in that kind of situation?

But it was an ignorant comment and we're allowed to discuss it here. It doesn't warrant her poor treatment but it was extremely unprofessional. She in NO WAY brought it upon herself but she added fuel to the fire.

As prior posters have pointed out, she wasn't speaking on behalf of Bioware, so why the hell should she be expected to be 'professional'? Why is she obligated to play nice and polite when people are making horrible, sexist remarks and calling her at home? Oh, right, because people will shriek 'don't feed the trolls' if she doesn't. Ugh.

Jennifer Hepler, you have all my support, I admire you deeply and I can only dream of being an awesome writer in a male-dominated industry, as you are. To the Black City with the haters. >:(

While reddit was entirely out of hand, is it really fair that any serious criticisms of her work(and believe me, there's quite a lot) should be negated since supposedly those people are "jealous of her vagina and her job"?

But that's just it, women would laugh at a statement like that because of ludicrous it would sound in a industry full of men. Of course you have a dick. Nothing special in that scenario...

That's the thing about trying to reverse comments like that. You have to reverse the situation in which they were said, also. If women were dominant in the industry and men were not it might make sense, but as is, it doesn't function well as an argument.

then why, i wonder, aren't they attacking david gaider, the lead writer for dragon age, with this same kind of vitriol? these idiots called her ****ing house.

I can only speak for my own posts in this topic, but I agree that her being unprofessional is somewhat excusable in this.  It's just that what she said wasn't just unprofessional, but shallow and vain as well.  Telling people "You're just jealous" is pretty much the worst thing to say if you want to be taken seriously.

I'm not missing your point, I'm tearing it down and now you're backpedaling. You mentioned her professionalism first, not me, so yes, it was a point in whatever argument you're trying and failing to make.

Your only 'point' here is not a point at all but essentially a name-call wrapped up in wanna-be-high-ground-hyprocrisy. You're calling her "vain, arrogant, and shallow".

That about sum it up? Speaking of trolls...

It was most definitely a moment of weakness. If confronted with hate and insults of that magnitude, who might not make a comment to a friend in order to buoy your flagging self-esteem? And yes, just for more context, her "jealousy" remark was sent to a friend on twitter, not to the haters, and not to the public in general. A DM might have been more prudent, but I don't blame her at all for saying it.

What I find funny is that she even responded.

This is the internet people. Yes, it's terrible that people are 'bullying' her and calling her names. But this is the internet where this happens on a daily basis. She shouldn't have let the trolls get to her and just deleted the account.

But instead he made the problem even worse.

I don't think you appreciate the extent of what actually happened. There were people calling her at home to insult her, for christs sake.

Fat is an adjective. It's not up to debate whether someone is or isn't. It is a valid negative critique of a person's health and appearance. The more extreme behavior shown by Reddit the other night is completely unjustified, but you can't just live in a little fantasy world where you are free from critique. She very easily could have just ignored it.

So we're not allowed to call her comment immature and downright idiotic? Yes it seems harsh, but come on, she's a full-grown woman and she posted something like that?

I guess maturity is a diamond dozen.

Nice to see a public show of support, there's no excuse for the type of malicious idiocy that some people displayed over this, and a lot of them seem to forget that the BioWare staff are people just like them, not some imaginary object to throw hate at from the safety of their keyboard. She had every right to respond as she saw fit, I'm sure I'd have been the same after seeing some of those messages.

They're attacking hepler because of her THE WORST PART OF WRITING FOR GAMES IS PLAYING GAMES interview she did.

That's why. Inexcusable, but that's why they're attacking her. It's not based on sex, not everything is sexist.
