And here is where I say to you, if you want to skip gameplay, go play an arcade shooter.  Gameplay, after all, is not synonymous with combat.  The interactive story is also a fundamental part.  Why this need to pass judgment on how others play the game?

Fast-forwarding through combat isn't the same thing as skipping gameplay.  True, outright skipping, at least of the nature the anti-skippers are up in arms about, would be using the console to set quest parameters.

Having a button that serves as a faster and more convenient killallhostiles tab OR spamming the escape key to speed through a cutscene isn't really the same thing at all.

You didn't think that the official Bioware thread for supporing Hepler would be an inappropriate place to bring up finding common ground with her abusers on the basis that they had legitimate gripes?  There are several other available threads for that, I'm fairly sure.

@Hafling. Well, after a storm comes a calm. The only thing we can hope is that in another decade or three people realize that the internet is not a place to do everything we want. Movement are beginning to show up.

And I understand your frustration, but bioware simply cannot give into this specific kind of bullying. It would just be wrong and reinforce the ones that act this way that if they behave like that they will get to destroy what the rest of us like.

I just hope that all this hate for Jennifer ends soon... the things that people do sometimes still amazes me. Irrespective how she replied back on twitter no one deserves to be treated like that in public there is always another way to sit down and have a civilized debate...

This is not the thread for a discussion about gameplay versus story.

Let's end that tangent now, please.

so gameplay as defined by you is sitting through the interactive film, and making choices on the dialogue wheel

How does "gameplay" differ from a choose your own adventure book then

Deleted to comply with wishes of the mods here.  Sorry!

I love Hepler's work, on both the DA franchise and on TOR. The smuggler story on TOR has some of the funniest, best written dialogue ever, with scenes that are pure Han Solo/Indiana Jones/action adventure. in a way that none of the other class stories are.

She wrote the smuggler storyline? That's awesome. I love playing Smuggler! Next to Imperial Agent and Bounty Hunter definitely my favorite. I think she did a great job on that (like all the other writers for the game).

The attacks on her family is the part that sparks my own anger. The forums are full of the usual Haters and trolls, and they are bad enough. But coming after family? Insults are the least of your worries then, IMO.

It is my wish that EA bans all accounts to forums, games, DLC, media, stores, etc for these offenders, as well as any other legal course that may prove actionable. Some may see it as hitting mosquitoes with a wrecking ball, but skeeters spread disease, and these pests willingly chose to draw first blood.

They proberly would do so, if they could track them down. But these specefic attacks didn't happen only on BSN.

It is good to see Bioware standing up for Jennifer Hepler.

I was quite shocked to see this happening, to be honest. To see a fandom I used to have such close ties with mired in something so utterly reprehensible is saddening indeed.

And the "reasons" are utterly laughable to begin with.

Bans are easily enough gotten around, unfortunately, for people who are determined enough to do it, and one needn't be a member of the forums to purchase of Bioware's products, so that isn't a practical solution.  But anyway, I don't think a lot of people realize how little of this actually happened on the Bioware forums.  Bioware wouldn't have allowed these attacks, considering just how vicious they were, to just go on and on and on for months.

This is the only Social site that I use; visit some other forums only. So my personal intel on such is rather scant. But if these louts used something like Facebook to attack her, and Bioware has active accounts with their games and such, it is my hope that they will also aid their own affiliates curtail such criminal actions.

But a ban from EA is not a small thing to many gamers, as every EA based game is seemingly affected. And if you take away their toys, you might spank these infants where it hurts.

I admire your reaction Bioware and I salute to Ms. Hepler for giving them some of their own medicine.

If you´re throwing punches at someone you should also be able to take them, simple as that.

As for all your skip gameplay points, that is a bit different i feel. Those are common yes, but that is to skip usually when farming stuff, walkthroughs im sorry doesnt count. it isnt to really skip but as a help. Now when i usually skip or see people skip it is only "after" a person has been through it before. such as an mmo or playing through a game or scenario multiple times. Much like skipping cutscenes. When we know what is gonna be said, or when we die iin a fight, and have to suffer through the cutscene again.

These all involve speeding things up.  Which is precisely what Hepler was referring to with a fast-forward button.  I can't stand puzzles that involve nothing more than trial-and-error, such as the tile puzzle in the Urn quest in Origins.  Puzzles of that nature are little more than timesinks as far as I'm concerned.  Anything that requires me to take notes in order to keep track is a recipe for migraine-inducing frustration.  Going online for the solution is absolutely a "skip button," or a "fast-forward" button insofar as it can literally reduce the time it takes me to get past the puzzle by several hours.

The same goes for Walkthroughs.  Not a true skip, perhaps, but many players resort to them to save time and frustration.

What, exactly, is the difference between hitting a button that skips a cutscene, and hitting a button that skips combat?  Yes, many people only do that when they're already familiar with how a scene goes.  So what?  Why is it okay for people to skip a cutscene they've already seen once or several times, but the idea of skipping combat brings about such umbrage?  Literally the only difference here is that one involves a cutscene, and the other combat.  Why is one okay to skip but not the other?

I wonder why people adamantly against the concept don't already raise holy hell that there's already a "killlallhostiles" cheat feature.

2 reasons to me anyways. a cutscene is always the same, unless its something like DA where you have multiple choices, unless you have seen them all. But combat can always be played differently. More importantly it is a game. You dont go see a movie just to press the skip button, not if its a movie you like and interested seeing. You dont read a book just to skip pages. The same with a game. Not the first time around anyways.

as for tracking down those customers, well i would imagine if it were possible, they would do so, but wishful thinking doesnt change that, if say all the customers bioware games dragged in were people like harrassers and bullies would bioware just stop making and selling games altogether? because they are taking a stand against not wanting customers like that? Thankfully it isnt that way of course.

Since this skipping notion has reappeared again, I remind others that these are already in place in abundance; just rather hidden like the Awesome button.

Exploits and console commands; folks use them, at least many seemingly do in solo games. The various walkthroughs, Wiki's, and source books seem to be jammed full of ways to max abilities, gold, time savers, etc.

* DAO appears to have many Players at high level when departing Lothering.
* Skyrim seems to have a rash of bucket thieves, rock Stealthers, arrow switchers, etc.
* ME series seemingly has ways to bypass mini-games besides Omni-gel, simply by hitting console buttons quickly.

And then command codes. Devs use them, and so do many Players. Skyrim; which apparently has more fighting; less dialogue than Bioware fare as a rule makes such codes simple. Had to look up unlocking a door yesterday as it might be needed. The code was 'unlock'. It seems that all Jennifer Hepler did was inquire as to making such an option in the game; not hidden.

Then the vermin aforementioned in this thread came out of their hidey holes and attacked her and her family.Time for an exterminator to rid the forums and games of such pests, and I nominate any of the linked TOS partners and affilates used in these attacks to smite 'em.

Hell, if I were selling a product and the only people who ever bought it turned out to be entitlement bullies like the ones who went after Hepler?  I'd quit selling in a heartbeat.  I won't ever cater to people who believe that buying something entitles them to make threats against my person or my family.  I'd haul their asses into court and have it explained to them through fines and imprisonment .

Happy ending would be Helper saying everything is "aaaallllllllllllllllllll riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight". But I admit I know next to nothing of her personal life. So let's hope this whole incedent isn't lemon on a wound.

Well, that may be myself, Bioware, EA, fair minded indv that dislike bullies, non-apathetic members of the community, and perhaps those that have a wider peripheral view than themselves; just a guess.

Someone got trolled on the internet (never happens) and it's a big deal because she works for Bioware.
