So can I. In a lapse of judgement she decided to play their game. After all, she's only human and we're emotional creatures. Unfortunately the only winning move is to not play it.SubspaceGirl wrote...
I'm not using the gender card. But I can understand why she said what she said.

Totally deserved all of this.
She's just proof of how much Bioware has fallen.
Yes because HARRASMENT, a serious crime punishable by law, is a viable form of displaying your dislike of someone's ability at their job...
What is wrong with some people on the internet? <_<
I agree, she is a wonderful person and truely an inspiration to us gamers, I would like to personally wish her well and hopefully she returns to work without the weight of this incident on her shoulders.

She does but I'll forgive her if she just quits from video games industry.
Its rediculous how far angry, insecure nerds will go on the internet just to ruin someone. I got about a million things that are better worth their time. For starters, not getting butthurt and taking something completely out of context. Next would actually be searching for a job. After that, moving out of their parent's basement. Etcetera.
Cry me a river or deal with it.

There's no way of settling the 'is this a gender/feminism' thing, of course, but I stand firm in my belief that she wouldn't be putting up with a quarter of this nonsense if she had a Y chromosome.
I stand firm in my belief that you are wrong.

Is this the only part you can wrap your head around ?? That she should have ignored being called fat on top of all the nasty stuff she has endured ?? If I was bullied and backed into a corner like she was . I wouldn't have turned the other cheek and walked away either.Draythe wrote...
Briiel wrote...
Ok when has calling a person FAT ever been a criticism ???Abuse has never been OK . EVER !
Calling her at home ? NOT OK ! Stalking her on the forums/twitter/etc ?? NOT OK !!Telling her to kill herself ?? NOT OK !! For those of you wanting to argue about what she said in response. I would have said FAR worse had it been me.
here I will quote some things people should remember and think about.
"Judge not lest Ye be judged and found wanting "
"If you don't have nothing nice to say , Don't say anything at all"
Fat is an adjective. It's not up to debate whether someone is or isn't. It is a valid negative critique of a person's health and appearance. The more extreme behavior shown by Reddit the other night is completely unjustified, but you can't just live in a little fantasy world where you are free from critique. She very easily could have just ignored it.

Here's the difference:
Person A calls her a fat ***** who can't write worth ****. I hate that person and think they are scum.
Person B (me) thinks that one thing she said was disappointing and, in a moment of weakness, she showed some immaturity.
I don't know for sure if she is an overall arrogant person, but that single line sure was.
There is no difference. A name call is a name call. Whether you swear or not doesn't matter, you're just expressing you're displeasure by saying something hurtful to someone else.

As disgusting as the attacks may have been I'd argue that trying to turn this into some feminist agenda is even more disgusting. She wasn't targeted by these trolls for her gender. In fact, she was the one who brought gender into the equation.
If anything feminism is the real 'cancer'.
Feminism is the greatest civil and human rights movement to ever have existed, and will be the most vital ideology in terms of improving the human condition in the remainder of the twenty-first century.
Rampant, vicious misogyny like that suffered by Hepler is (one of) the 'real cancer(s)'. Yes, people are attacking her for her statements regarding her personal feelings on gaming (which alone is intensely pathetic), but it is incredibly unlikely that the average man making the same statement would face the same level of abuse.
The internet can often be a hostile place, for people of all kinds. However, there is a special, passionate vitriol reserved for women who dare voice unpopular opinions on the web. I would be happy to link you to many examples and blogs in support of this statement, if you wish.
Back on topic; Bioware is deserving of respect and praise in coming out in defence of their unjustly victimised employee. I made a donation to Bullying Canada to also show my support. Good job Bioware. :]

Ladies and gentlemen, this is absolutely unacceptable.
Thanks for moderating this one so I didn't have to reply to it. Had absolutely ZERO value beyond justifying bullying and harrassment of Hepler, and whinging about how horrible BioWare is.
Just a heads up: If people want to give constructive criticism, then give constructive criticism. But back that up with specifics and explanations. 'This is awful because I don't like it' does not work for any discussion.

Agreed. But something like that cannot be left unfixed. Otherwise the 'trolls' will get what they want. I hate using that word because for some reason, losers sat behind a screen find satisfaction from being recognized as a troll. I think if someone had officially said something before Jennifer had replied then a lot of this could have be prevented. But I only know what I've been told. And I know EXACTLY what people on the internet are like, they say the most horrendous things to randomers and I can safely say if I was in her shoes, I would've said A LOT more than she did. So well done to her. Really.

I prefer to think of it as, the only losing move is to stop making games. And since Bioware seems fond of her, I doubt that'll happen any time soon.
Everything else is noise.

People would accept females in gaming if they didn't do the whole LOOK AT ME IM A GRRRL XD I PLAY GAEMS personality. Oh , and when anyone critsizes a writer or someone in the gaming industry who is female it's automatically sexist!!!
Feminism is an awful hypocritical thing.
