Is there any way to exit the grasp of Phantom or Atlas?

Is there any way to avoid the instant death caused by Phantoms or Atlas Mechs?
Once I mashed my keyboard and mouse like hell and got out, and I'm not sure if I did something, it was a glitch, or someone else shot the phantom that was holding me, or any sort of strange interference and deus ex machina that was not supposed to happen.

But I don't like the possibility of getting insta-killed, so I prefer sitting back with the Widow.

If a team mate kills the phantom or atlas before the end of the animation you get dropped/let go. I don't think there's anything you can do once you're stuck in the animation though. If an asari adept hits a phantom with a stasis or the phantom is controlled in some other way I believe this frees you as well.
Also, for the Phantoms, their kill move looks like their normal melee attacks so it's possible you didn't actually escape the kill move.

You both are doing something very wrong then. Killing phantoms as a vanguard is very easy as charge and nova give you the perfect tools for keeping them stunned, which gives you ample time to assault them from close up with your shotgun. Even a heavy melee is very much possible then, especially as it comes with the benefit of completely incapacitating the phantom if its barrier is gone.
As for getting killed mid-animation, there's a simple solution: just make sure you don't stand too close. It works just as well as it sounds trivial.

My tactic is, Charge, Nova, jump back with Space, Repeat.
The problem is that sometimes the Atlas or the Phantom can grab you after Charging there and then you're doomed.
