At least, when compared to Combat Drone. After playing Engi twice in the demo, and main-ing a Quarian Engineer in MP (Cryo is so sick!), I can safely say that 9 time out of 10, I would much rather have Drone as
opposed to a Turret.

So, instead of just complaining, I thought I would make some suggestions of how to make the Sentry Turret better.

Feel free to agree with/add to/refute my claims as you see fit. Image IPB

I'll start with what I do actually like about the Turret:
  • Long engagement range. As it stands, this is the only thing that really sets the turret apart from the drone. Turret engages enemies from a very respectable range.
  • Final rank (Rocket Launcher or Flamethrower) amps up killing power significantly. However, is it worth spending all those points just to get there? Not to mention, Combat Drone also has rockets...
  • So long as you're guarding an area with only one or two entrances, the Turret is pretty decent at holding its own provided you can find a nice spot for it. Although, I would argue that Drone also does a good job at
    this.
Problems I see with the Turret:
  • On paper, it has roughly the same stats as the Drone. However, when you take into account the lack of mobility, the turret leaves a lot to be desired. Where an enemy grenade would obliterate a turret, a drone will usually waft safely away. Where a turret needs to be replaced every time a new wave of enemies approaches from a flank, the drone automatically seeks them out.
  • When it comes to its actual firepower, Turret definitely seems to lack a certain... gravitas. The short bursts are cute and occasionally stagger enemies, but I feel like if it were constantly firing (even if it did
less base damage) it would be far more useful and fill a different niche than the Drone. I would use Drone for knockback and occasional damage, and the Turret for suppressing fire.
  • A minor complaint, Cryo Ammo doesn't seem to proc enough to warrant 5 (!!) upgrade points.
  • The Visuals:  the Turret just seems diminutive and, well, unimpressive. Most of the time, I can't tell when it's been destroyed amidst the chaos of more flashy combat effects. The Drone, on the other hand, is pretty
hard to miss, what with it being a giant ball of neon and all.
Possible fixes I would like to see for the Turret:
  • Make the Turret not activate a global cooldown, and instead only have a cooldown on the power itself. This would make it far easier to have both Drone and Turret working in tandem, similar to how a Vanguard can combo Charge + Nova. Unfortunately, this fix would have much bigger implications on single player than MP (since no classes have both Turretand Drone).
  • Increase it's base shields. If it both had its superior range AND was able to take more of a beating, I think it would be a viable alternative to Drone. As of right now, Turret takes little more than a couple bursts or a wayward grenade to take it out, even when maxed.
  • Make it so it's always firing (or at least firing more often) instead of doing sporadic bursts. Again, coupled with the lack of mobility, increased fire power makes more sense anyway. This would also make its Cryo ammo more desirable.
  • Increase it's size by about 50%, amp up its hovering particle effect, or make UI circle around it (I think this represents its "health," like the Drone) much more visible. Anything that makes it easier to keep track of in the midst of a firefight.
...

So, just my two credits.

I agree. As of now the turret feels like a waste of time and not worth the points I invested into it (and making me wish all the more for a respec options).

It just doesn't seem worth it to use, except maybe to get a few assists (worth about 20 points). It just makes me envy the cerberus turret all the more.

I would have rathered one like the Cerberus op deployed. That looked a lot more useful.

Overall I agree mobile drone wins over immobile turret even if you can throw it.

I agree with OP. except for having the drone and turret out? is that what you meant? thats crazy talk. But yeah the rocket turret with cryo ammo that I have..... is terrible and i wish i never got it... every skill in the game is awesome and makes me smile. The sentry turret.. is terrible... just terrible... and the rocket... is terrible.... i'm sorry.. i love this game and pre ordered after playing the multiplayer demo but... the sentry turret is the worst skill i have used. i would love to see it fire MUCH MUCH MUCH more often even if it did less dmg just make it fire more!!

Well on Bronze it's taken out in about 10 pistol shots. So...

Sucks how the Quarian Engie is useless because of it. I agree, a buff would be in good interests.

Yeah, Sentry Turret needs a buff. It's hard to tell when it is still on the battlefield, and when it is, it's hard to tell when it deals any damage. The only time you see it acutally do something is when you unlock the flamethrower upgrade.

Good to hear that others have had lackluster experiences with the Turret.

Maybe a game developer will realize that and it will be tweaked in a later patch; I think it's too late to change anything for release (games are already boxed), but there's always hope for future updates.

"Increase it's base shields." and "Increase it's size by about 50%, amp up its hovering particle effect, or make UI circle around it " - I support these.

Haven't tried it in MP, but I got some decent use out of it in Single Player. I basically look at it as one more thing the enemies are focusing on besides me; between it and the drone, I was able to pick off enemies easily and lock them down. It's far from perfect, but it has it's uses, and it's better than nothing on the battlefield.

It would be cool if it was sort of like the Cerberus turrets in its firing patterns and power. The Cerberus turret as it stands it a powerful suppressing weapon-firing several rounds in each burst- as the turret stands, it fires a very quick burst that deals barely any damage to bronze level enemies. It needs to fire longer, more damaging bursts, maybe then the weak health would be compensated for. Right now I hate them, they are like crappy combat drones, which don't move and are incredibly hard to see.

If it were as powerful as the Cerebus turrets, it would be overpowered. You wouldn't even need any of talents or powers; just keeping throwing in the turret and let it mow down everything.

I powered up the turret as a Quarian Engineer this weekened, and I think it's got a little more use than a lot of people give it credit for. I basically use it for a good backup weapon; once you give it the rocket launcher, it's great for covering your back and controlling the battlefield. Enemies tend to walk right past it and it shoots them in the back. If you put it in the right spot, you can really whittle down enemies before they even get close to you.

The Combat Drone is still better and more versatile, and I'd probably put my points there first, but between the Combat Drone engaging enemies at close range and the Turret tearing them apart at long-range, you can go crazy.

i think the turret is a good talent to have. I think its good and hey, if it wasn't or you don't like it, you can always use it as fodder and throw it behind cerberus shields or other enemy lines as a distraction

Also - and it could be just my imagination - but the turret seems quite good at taking out Guardians. I swear I saw it take down two of them with shots in their mail-slot.

They said from the start that the turret wasn't going to be a kill all weapon just something to get the enemies attention.

Personally I love the turret.

First, you toss it like a grenade, meaning you can lob it around corners and over ledges.  There are several spots on both maps that I scout with the turret.  In comparison the placement mechanics for the probe are quite limiting.

Second, with the missle upgrade the turret does a pretty good job of mopping up phantoms that flee.  Phantoms do not run away from turrets or engage them, so if a phantom flees, just toss your turret after it.

Would be a nice damage option is a Drone army Engineer.

With a Protector Drone (seems to work a lot like Combat Drone including the 3 targets hit talent) and a Combat Drone running interference a Turret could burn/Rocket in safety.

Back that up with Chain Overload spam and I reckon you got a winner.
