The day one or day zero dlc now cost money? Unless you buy the Collector's Edition that is.

I thought that Bioware and EA's idea behind free day one dlc was to get people to buy the game quickly and to prevent -ehm- people making illegal copies of the game. (just info this is).

That is a valid assumption

I do not see why people are going off about this, They did the same thing with ME2. If you buy the CE edition it is not a problem. This is why I have bought the CE edition for both games. I knew this was going to happened. If you wanted the complete game you should have bought the CE edition like those of us who did. I reserved and payed this game in full the day it was revealed because I wanted the full experience. Do not complain because you yourself waited so long to reserve the game and were unable to obtain the CE edition. If I was unable to get the CE edition of the game, I would be happy they are giving me the option to still get some of the CE bonuses.

less than $60 - used, no MP, not the full game

$60 - no Prothean, not the full game

$70-$80 - most likely the FULL game

$90-$120 - FULL game with EXTRA content

so is $80 the new $60? ROFL.
and $90 is the new $80? oh god.

It's actually something like $800 to get the "full" game if you want to buy garbage figurines to get DLC that should be in the main game.

Those figurines unlock random item packs for multiplayer mode, so no.

you know it's hilarious, a few months ago when news of the prothean was leaked people were outraged by the very idea of a living prothean, now they are whining about having to pay extra for him

Robotic dog is a DLC character, Prothy is a central character, ahh why am I bothering, EA/Bioware has got me by the balls on this one, but I learn from experience, it will not happen again.

my issue is that it is in no way DLC... we have known about the DLC since the announcement of the CE... which is almost a half year... i just don't know what to say

So you expect for free what others spent an extra $20 for?

I expect the game I pay $60 for to be intact, and to not have to pay extra money for something that SHOULD ALREADY BE IN THE GAME, but has instead been ripped out to make a profit.

Where's your proof it has been ripped out?

Taking a squad member out of the game so that you have to pay $20 extra for the Collector's Edition = ripping content out of the game

Again: Why do you assume he was part ot the main game? What makes you think he was?

You're getting that value in the online pass for the co-op portion.   I'm sure that will be $10 for those who buy used.

Why buy used near launch when new would be just $5 more? In a few months a used copy will probably be at least below retail even when buying the pass so I don't see the big deal. PC has been doing it for years

They didnt tell us the squad member was a Prothean. The way they passed it off, they acted as if it was another Zaeed. Hell, it couldve been Zaeed! Protheans are such a big part of the story. It needs to be apart of the main game.

But here's the hilarious part.  What IF he was another Zaeed or Kasumi-type squadmate?

You know, lacking full dialog?  Like EVERY OTHER DLC SQUADMATE?

I mean seriously.  Just because he's a Prothean he has to be a full-member with a wheel?

Isn't this effectively the same thing as what happened with Sebastian (that was his name, right?) in Dragon Age II? Except in that case there was a big promotion to boost one's preorder of the game up to Signature status for a while.

It is, in fact, exactly the same.

Not sure how you're calculating this. I'm getting the CE for PC (in Canada) and I'm pretty sure it only costs $75-80. $120 would only be if you're getting it off Ebay or something..

store.origin.com/store/ea/en_US/html/pbPage.me3
According to Origin, you now pay $79.99 if you want the full game (Prothean is not cut out). So if the game with the Prothean is cut out it is $59.99, the day one DLC at $10 will cost $69.99. So yes,
$70-$80 for most likely the full game. And then if you want the extra DLC coming later, it can easily get to the
$90-$120 range. There is no miscalculation here.

apparently he is a part of the main game just wont be a squad member its like 15 pages back i'm not digging to find it

I think just one guy said that, now all the people who are defending Bioware are using that as an excuse.
Something about an Audio file, I think it was.
But that could mean the content was already in the game, you just download the file to unlock it.
Thats like rubbing salt in a wound.

I think the whole he is in the game just not as a squad member thing comes from people who have read the leaked script?

This I haven't read it, do not wanna spoil myself :P

Of course if that bolded is true.. that  just makes  it that much more worst than anything.

Honestly I think this was leaked on purpose to see the reaction  to the whole deal is... Same thing that Bank of America did with the whole 5 bucks to use your debt card .

Multiplayer isn't considered part of the main game? Point still stands.

Pretty much except the SE didn't cost extra.

It's brilliant from a business standpoint because they'll make a ton of money off of it, but very shady and just going to make people more and more wary of Bioware and EA marketing tactics. I can't see an excuse for this other than 'We want to make more money, and technically, you don't need him in the game just like you don't need Tali and Garrus as squadmates."

They're random item packs that you can just as easily obtain by playing multiplayer, so no, I don't feel your point amounts to anything.

as I understand day 1 dlc is things that they wanted in the full game but didn't have time to finish before the game goes gold. people realize that they need to stop making the game weeks before launch right?

I've never bitten my tongue so hard before typing a response, the Prothean is a lore character, now I'm not normally a stickler for lore, but when the entire story has been wrapped around his species, this is just an insult.

day 1 dlc that is not free is content cut from the main game to make money. its nickel and diming us. plain and simple. why people are ok with this is beyond me.. its just blind fanboyism.. plain and simple.

the difference between this DLC and Arrival is that Arrival is like a mini expansion that came AFTER RELEASE.. like years after.. it wasnt day 1 dlc. thus im totally fine with that. what a company releases after launch is their business.

also, releasing day 1 DLC that is free, as long as you buy game is new, is also fine. im not paying any extra for that content. if i buy the game new like im supposed to.. ill get that content.

what is not fine is limiting the free DLC to the collector's edition (which has limited quantities), and then charging $10 for those that bought the standard edition. the prothean DLC should be included with ALL versions of the game if its bought new.. end of story.. its how mass effect 2 did it, its how dragon age origins worked.. there is zero excuse for them charging for the content. its a money grab..

bioware and EA.. you should be ashamed of yourselves..

If any of you actually care about this, maybe we should just flood the
twitters of some of the producers/developers/marketers involved in this.
Can't hurt, right?

Let me know if there's anyone I'm forgetting.

I sent a simple tweet asking why the squadmate isn't free for all people purchasing new copies of the game, and would encourage you guys to do the same. Bickering on a forum with other members won't accomplish anything, at least the devs can hear your complaints this way.

It's not the same Zaeed was available in all 'new' copies.  Missing out on weapons or armor is fine, but missing out on an entire character and story-part is not.  Also, FYI, I ordered the CE.

You know, I would have a bigger problem with DLC like this if the core game itself did not have much content. If I paid $60 for a game that lasted only 5 hours, and then the developers wanted to charge me $10 for another 2 hours, THEN I would be upset.

But for a game like Mass Effect, where a standard completionist playthrough will take 40-50 hours? Where the storyline spans 3 games and gives you the ability to import your decisions from previous iterations? The sheer amount of effort and labor that goes into this kind of production is almost overwhelming when you think about it.

Could EA/Bioware provide this content for free? Sure, they could. But why would they? They're not a charity. They've already developed a great product. Now they're providing additional content that we're free to choose whether or not to buy. Nobody's forcing us to pay the extra $10.

If he/she/it WAS like Zaeed, many, many lore buffs like myself would be very, very angry.
Due to the fact he is a Prothean, they deserve alot of dialogue.
Hell, I think they might deserve their own alternate ending where they turn into a collector and rape everyone.
But I think thats pushing it a little.

So... if you're not going to play Multiplayer... it's best to buy the game used (and then just buy the DLC seperately to put the price back at normal price)... right?
