NWN2: MOTB, Planescape: Torment and DA: Origins has it's moments.

Though not that strong in terms of writing, I love Bastion's narrative.

The Witcher 2
Hands down.  (It also had the most story/plot interactivity I've seen in a game.  With about 1/3 of the game (quests, area, etc.) dependign on one of your (many) choices.)
Portal 1 & 2 also excellent, though different style obviously.
Oh, and I happen to love the Deadly Rooms of Death (DROD) series; though that's a bit niche I realize.

Grim Fandango, the best gaming narrative of all time.
Planescape Torment
Sid Meiers: Alpha Centauri
Suikoden II
Ultima IV, V, VI, VII, VII Part Two
Heroes of Might and Magic IV
Final Fantasy VI and Tactics (VII is overrated to hell)
Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
The Longest Journey
Legendof Zelda Majora's Mask, hands down the best written Zelda.
and many more.....

Sorry, in my opinion Dragon age is not a good story, it's a good game but the story is not that good.

Even if the story isn't spectacular, I don't know how anyone can say it wasn't well-written.

It wasn't well written, it spend too much time trying to develop its unoriginal lore than telling a cohesive tale.

Warning. This post contains a lot of waffling.

All the games I've played either have a plot that is too simplistic (nearly all of the Mario Games) or a plot that is too complex (all of the Final Fantasy Games FFVII onwards. Before FFVII they were the opposite extreme).

Well written game maybe Twilight Princess. Sure the plot isn't all that complex, but it's engaging. There is a lot of pathos thought the story.

Bioware games are decent when it comes to plot, but what makes Bioware stories great is their characters. Larger than life characters really steal the show.

Final Fantasy's strength is in their characters too. FFXIII seems to be the exception to that rule.

FFXII is the only game in the series to pull of the whole multiple opposing factions without being too complex. You know preciesly who all the enemies are. You know who is trying to userp who and you know who the spineless power craving maniac is. You know what each party member thinks about the situation and you know what you have to do about the situation. It's a little bit on the convoluted side but it's well written enough for you to get the gist of what's going on. Just don't delve deeper into Final Fantasy games (your head would explode).

No games really take the title for well written. As for Resident Evil they are extremely scary but the fear factor is ruined by exposition delivered by evil Umbrella agents trying to explain their convoluted plans. Is it just me or does Umbrella's motives make no sense? The films were even worse for this. They might as well ditch the plot and focus all their attention on shooting zombies (which is the only thing Resident Evil gets right).

Perfect Dark is silly fun and has a good plot. No engaging characters. Though there is a cute alien who talks like Mordin.

You know what? I can think of a few games that really excelled in the plot department.

Forced Unleashed!
Infameous!
Bully!

I was going to put Dragon Age Origins but the A plot is a bit cliche. Do loads of quests that involve far more interesting subplots to reunite the world against the Reapers I mean Darkspawn. Come on Dragon Age Orgins and Mass Effect 3 have the same plot.

I haven't played the Deus Ex games.

Actually Final Fantasy VI was just right deep enough, but not convoluted. Best in the series.

Twilight Princess....lol....Majora's Mask is FAR better storywise, its the best in the series when it comes to writing.

It amuses me that people include just the first half of a game in a "best of" thread. Words do not do such an intellectual travesty justice. Also, it's supposed to be 5, making a list thirty games long defeats the purpose. Narrowing it to five forces you to think. Also Zelda...in a best writing list? Seriously?

1) Chrono Trigger
2) Xenogears
3)Final Fantasy 6
4)Baldur's Gate 2
5)Persona 4

Bioshock - Honestly, one of the more touching stories I've played in a long time. Just the whole atmosphere of that game really brings you in and Would you kindly still clings to my dear gaming heart, lol.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution: So many touchy subjects when it comes to humanity and the overall future.

KOTOR - This game is the reason I got future Bioware titles.

Red Dead Redemption - That barn scene near the end...

Mass Effect Series - Even though, I prefer the first one's story, the second one really got to me with certain characters, so I'm hoping ME3 will be a good mixture of the two.

Honorable mention - this ending to Bioshock 2 really choked me up Neutral Ending

^I actually prefer this over the "good" ending.

If you don't have original Bioshock, you aren't a connoisseur of video games.

Bioshock isn't as good as the psuedo intellectuals on the internet like to make out. It's what the film version of The Spy Who Loved Me would have been if Ayn Rand wrote the screenplay.

Agreed. Half-Life series is crazy good. Half-Life 2 is still THE game that left the biggest impact when I played it. It was completely surreal at the time.

Half-Life was the one that got me into gaming, I was 10 when I first played it. The G-Man has a special place in my heart. Half-Life Opposing Force is my all time favorite game

Bioshock, Deus Ex HR, Red Dead Redemption Portal 1-2 all have amazing writing and voice acting

I was going to include Metal Gear Solid... then "This is just like one of my Japanese animes!" and "It's so beautiful. The sky, the snow, the caribou, and most of all... you." came to mind. >_<

Phantom Dust
Mass Effect Series
FFX
Half-Life Series
BioShock 1
KoToR series, excluding SWTOR

Phantom Dust especially. Even though the game was mostly text (outside of its narrated CG sequences) the writing mixed incredibly well with the games audio/atmosphere making it a very believable game world.

Deus ex series, baldur's gate series, kotor series, nwn2 mask of the betrayer was really personal and great, Max Payne series is extremely underrated, and I guess mass effect can be thrown in there.

CoD is a lifechanging experience. But GoW also derserves honorable mention, since it does make my spurs jingle, jangle.

dam it, was just going to post some "lol cod story best" but you beat me to it.

Do you know that  the ending of   Black Ops was considered the best in video game history...

I flipped so many tables the day I read that article.

Yeah, I'm guessing the majority of people who voted for that were kiddies thinking "OH WOW WHAT A TWIST BEST ENDINGZ EVAR".  I mean, it WAS a twist, but by no means original.

BioShock is easily one of my favorite endings, because its twist was a freakin' TWIST.  To use a simple video-game mechanic like that and make it absolutley essential in the plot... just a great, great ending.  Actually, the whole game was fantastic.

My personal "Best Written Games" list would have to be:

- Dragon Age: Origins
- Planescape: Torment (easily)
- Mass Effect
- Red Dead: Redemption
- SW: KotOR
- Deus Ex (original and Human Revolution)
- Assassin's Creed and AC: Brotherhood (the first one had a fantastic air mystery and conspiracy throughout, which diminished as the series continued, sadly; Brotherhood still has my favor as one of the best "WTF" cliffhangers ever)
