Metal Gear. No contest. An epic character driven narrative that spans over 50 in game years, with more plot twists and depth than nearly all of Bioware's titles combined.

Yes, I realize I'm saying this on BSN. No, I don't care.

EDIT: Honourable mentions include Grim Fandango, really, anything touched by Tim Schaffer, certain Final Fantasies, Xenogears, and Mother 3. And how did I forget Shenmue? Thank you Phoenix.

Now that I think about it, the pinnacle of video game writing as far as what I've played is definitely 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. This review describes it pretty well.

It literally reads like a novel and it has six different endings based on decisions you make. The true ending is MINDBLOWING. If you have a Nintendo DS and you aren't adverse to a lot of reading or puzzles, then you have to track down a copy.

Mass effect series
Assassins Creed series
Potal Series
Freespace series
Homeworld series
Crysis 1, Warhead (I will never agree that Crysis 2 was good as a story. Actually I won't agree that it even deserves the title 'Crysis')
Nexus Jupiter Incident
Starcraft series (Not a big fan but I have to agree that its a very good game)
Lego Starwars the full saga was also pretty good

In order. From what I've played:

Metal Gear Solid 2 (Yes. Better than MGS1. I said it. The last codex conversation is completely awesome. Post Modern genius. Too bad most people hate this game simply because they have a man crush for Snake and hate on Raiden just because he isn't scruffy badass. In fact it's downright ironic. SPOILER: The game insults Raiden for trying to be Snake and yet most players want to play as him. Go figure.)

Knights of the Old Republic 2 (It's a shame that to really enjoy it you need the Content Restoration Patch. This game has great and varied characters. Not to mention the plot is very original and well thought out, even if the setting is been there, done that. This game also brings us Kreia, one of the best characters ever written. I'd get into it, but I'd rather not dump a bunch of spoilers everywhere.)

Bioshock (While the plot is simple and mostly in the background it is told masterfully. It also has a bit of Post Modern flavor, just like Metal Gear Solid 2. Gotta love how both games point out a similar theme and deconstruct it to both challenge and insult the player.)

Metal Gear Solid 1 (Not only is it one of the best games in the genre, it is a solid action movie with likeable characters, filled with twists and turns. The ending is kinda sappy though, but that's to be expected in Metal Gear games.)

Honerable Mentions
----------------------------
I'd put Heavy Rain, but that game has a crap load of weird plotholes. You can explain most of them away, but the fact that there are so many is pretty silly. So instead I'll just give it an honorable mention.

Batman Arkham City has balls. The whole last hour of the game is pure bliss. Not only does it do the unexpected, it challenges Batman and his code directly. It asks all the questions that a good superhero movie/game/comic should and it does it well.

I'd also put Planescape Torment, but I haven't finished the game. The clunky interface just won't let me get into it. From what I played though, the writting is top notch.

1) Legacy of Kain series.
2) Planescape: Torment
3) KotOR 2
4) Assassin's Creed
5) Bioshock
6) Heavy Rain

Honorable mentions:

7) Portal 2
8) Red Dead Redemption
9) Skyward Sword
10) Deus Ex: Human Revolution

I've yet to find anything even remotely on the level of quality of the first three, especially LoK. An incredibly brilliant blend of vampires, gothic horror, and time travel. Voice-acting remains top notch unto this day.

Agreed, Legacy of Kain is truly an epitome in video game writing. however, no game has gripped onto me harder than Human Revolution, i was caught so off guard by that one... good lord. i truly haven't found one fault with it's writing. whereas with LoK it could be claimed the writing is very complicated, have you tried explaining someone who hasn't played it what's going on there? Image IPB

Planescape Torment.
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.
Baldurs Gate 1 + 2.
Deus ex.
Alpha Protocol.

Also even though it is sparse the writing in both Freespace games are very good, there just ain't all that much of it.

I'd also list the Legacy of Kain series, but they'd eat up all the five spots.

Well not in any particular order. Remember this isn't neccessarily about the OVERALL arching main plot, but also about dialogue and little things. Also these are the games I played for the story or/and dialogue and couldn't stop playing because they were so good:

The Secret of the Monkey Island

The Curse of the Monkey Island

Metal Gear Solid series

Dragon Age: Origins (and yes DA2 also, FLAME ON!)

Mass Effect series in general

The Darkness (had some really good scenes and dialogue)

Silent Hill 1 & 2 (love the fact that not everything is outright explained to you)

Deus Ex HR.

Gabriel Knight (really a gem of writing)
