Quite a few but i'm just gonna say the entire Metal Gear series.

Specifically Snake Eater, gotta admit that it's the only game that has ever made me cry like a little ****.... The story was just wow and The Boss was such an amazing well written character imo.

Oh wow, so many. In no particular order:
  • Planescape: Torment
  • The Metal Gear Series (Snake Eater being the high-point in terms of protagonist characterization)
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic (Sith Inquisitor storyline)
  • Jade Empire
  • Mass Effect
  • Dragon Age: Origins
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum

Planescape: Torment, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and The Witcher have excellent writing for video game standards. Other RPGs as well. Most Troika/Black Isle/Obsidian games, in fact.

PST and The Sith Lords are definitely wayyy up there. The add-on pack for NWN2 is pretty good too. I'd also add in the (original) Deus Ex and I also really liked/enjoyed the writing for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. I'm not convinced about Skyrim.

Metal Gear series
Planescape: Torment
Dragon Age: Origins
Mass Effect series
Baldur's Gate II
Final Fantasy from VII to X (unfortunately series went down after Sakaguchi left)
the Witcher II

I also like some of the SWTOR storylines. Amazing for MMO.

i personally think that mass effect 2 had terrible writting, no actuall plot, no indroduction to the story, no weight ... basically the whole story revolves around the introducion of the individual characters and dealing with fringe threat - every good writter knows that you can't tell a good story while spending 3/4 of its time introducing characters. the original mass effect story was classy, but
imo ... one of the best writtings could be mafia: the city of lost heaven

Don't make it a "top something" then. Just type games you like for their story. :)

It's not the destination, it's the journey. As long as details are great, the major plot can be straight forward.

Couple of games that stand out, but when I think about it some of the best games also have flaws.

Planescape Torment (brilliant descriptions and characterisations)
Jade Empire (very neat plotting)
Witcher 2 (amazingly natural integration of dialogue into the storyline, though noticeably uneven at times, also clearly too ambitious plotting)
Mass effect 2 (tremendously atmospheric character missions)
Mask of the Betrayer (pretty close to perfect)
Baldur's Gate (for 'you must gather your party before moving forward')

Agreed, Legacy of Kain is truly an epitome in video game writing. however, no game has gripped onto me harder than Human Revolution, i was caught so off guard by that one... good lord. i truly haven't found one fault with it's writing. whereas with LoK it could be claimed the writing is very complicated, have you tried explaining someone who hasn't played it what's going on there? Image IPB

Oh geez, you kidding me? Explaining the narrative to someone who's never played it is absolute hell. It's definitely not newbie friendly, especially when Blood Omen 1 is impossible to find anywhere, and later installments (especially SR2 and Defiance) start relying on events there for the narrative. It took me multiple playthroughs and internet forum searching to fully piece together all the different story arcs.

My only problem with HR was that I felt the ending was a copout to what was otherwise a very well laid-out story.

Just from a writing standpoint Planescape:Torment is up there, The story is so deep and involving and you actually are made to care about the characters you travel with. The way the story unfolds is genius and some of the dialogue is just beautiful. I feel it's the closest a game has come for me to being like reading a book and playing a game at the same time. Part of me feels sad that their could never be a game like this again with such deep characters and a great storyline that unfolds so well.

@Moondoggie - totally agreed.PS:T Remains one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had :)

Also, Mask of the Betrayer was superb. Aside from the ridiculously powerful gnolls (!) it was pretty much perfect, and the writing was wonderful.

Playing through VtM: Bloodlines as a Malkavian was enormous fun - the writing for that character path was suitably crazy.

Non CRPG, then Bioshock is up there for me. Some of the audio tapes were just fantastic. Oh, and Grim Fandango, terrific game.

I'll go purely on those that kept me the most involved, immersed and interested in what happened next.

Star Wars: Knights of the OId Republic (My first Bioware game, and one I'll always remember fondly.)
Mass Effect 1: A universe and characters that just made everything that much better. Also managed to create something that most other games usually fail to do for me, a real dislike/hate for the main antagonist (Saren).
Heavy Rain: Fine, the plot had more holes in it than swiss cheese, but I sat there, for one whole day and played the game from start to finish, if that doesn't say something I don't know what do,
I wish I could say Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy as well, but that game just took a wrong turn after 2/3 of the story.

EDIT: Oh, Red Dead Redemption of course, loved that story all the way through.
