But let me ask you guys.
How is this ME3 related?
Considering all the talk of writing quality amongst the various mass effect games and all the talk of how mass effect 3 will or won't live up to certain standards, I'd say it's all very much related.

5) Knights of the Old Republic 2 (yes yes no ending was rushed yadda yadda)
4) Dragon Age: Origins (best Bioware game, best writing if you ask me)
3) Fallout New Vegas (concentrated Fallout goodness)
2) Fallout 1 (the original Fallout goodness)
1) Planescape: Torment (would probably be a literary classic if it wasn't a video game. This was better than the majority of books I read)

Baldur's Gate.
I think it was amazing how they left the plot open to you and kept your character clueless of who the 'end boss' is. I loved how it open it let your character make decisions and thus making it the superior ROLEPLAYING experience. I think the sequel is the better game though.
Sorry I didn't want to answer for him/her just wanted to express my opinion.

Portal
A game that knew how to do short and sweet, trading fluff for polish and using minimalism not as a flaw, but as a strength.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
A game which can still stand on its own despite the dated graphics, OoT was and still is an excellent example of a Heroic Journey all in one go. With a wide and varied cast, a good balance of direction and unexpected turns, and setting the foundation of new advancements in a classic franchise, Zelda OoT is about as good as could be expected, and far better than most.
Half-Life 2
There's something about a silent protagonist who explores a world, and Gordon Freeman opens up City 17 like none other. HL2 has set a standard in merging the story into the gameplay, better than many others who have followed. With a wide world, Valve's distinct way of packing context into the environment, and a plotline which was only predictable in that it's still not predictable, HL2 made a great setting that deserves recognition.
Final Fantasy 7/8
I put these two together because these were the best examples of a type of story that has since been forgotten, even by the Final Fantasy franchise: the bildungsroman, the development novel. While FF is famous for its overly detailed summon sequences and stoic badasses, what many neglect or forget is that the character development of the main protagonists was AWAY from stoicism. The archetypical stoic badasses were, in fact, immature and lonely young men who grew and developed, both despite and because of their flaws, into better and more open people. Though certainly not without flaws or for everyone, both these Final Fantasies not only made entire worlds, but rebelled against the caricatures that many remember them as.
Plus, Aeris.
Persona 4
I have a strong spot for stories in which character development is a primary theme, and no list would be complete without reference to the Persona series. Persona 4 in particular is an impressive feat: a paranormal murder mystery, a psychological thriller, decent comedy, but also a high-school story in which realistic people with realistic flaws deal with realistic problems. Jealousy towards friends, presumptions, sexual identity crisis: a number of issues far deeper than most ever touched by Bioware exist in what is, in effect, a young adult's game. With excellent character and relationship development in a wide, dynamic, and largely sympathetic cast, there's something or someone for everyone to identify with.
Everything but Final Fantasy 7 i'm cool with especially the love for FF 8 but more importantly finallly Persona is getting some love those are really good games and to a social system where you talking to your party and romances alot better than any thing Bioware has done between Mass Effect or Dragon Age.

Opinions bro, everybody has one xD I find it suprising how FF is mentioned. I love the games but the dialouge is cheesy and really out of place. Still love them though xD

It was a great story. I am just judging by story and writing, not if it is a great RPG as such. There are few games that really had an impact on me. I don't want to say 'life changing' but ... you feel like it was imporant. Few games did that as I said, and BG was one of it. I mean both, BG and BG2 of course since they belong together.Phaedon wrote...

Actually I was thinking to mention Fallout as well, but while I had lots of fun playing all Fallout games, old and new, they didn't seem really 'deep'. I mean it is a more or less generic post apocalyptic story. Everything in ruins, gangs everywhere, scavengers and finally building a new civilisation of the ruins of the old. Nothing that really surprised me.
