Opinions bro, everybody has one xD I find it suprising how FF is mentioned. I love the games but the dialouge is cheesy and really out of place. Still love them though xD

The  one thing you always have to take into account when it comes to  Final Fantasy or any  game that is localized from Japanese to English... is that the langauges and cultures are vastly different. So the effect that has on story telling themes and sentence structure got to be taken in to account.  This is not to be used as excuse for bad  writing.. no. It something that still has to be taken in to account.,   so a line that would make perfect sense in its native  language you translate to  English directly and it sounds completely and utter fools.  This happens  any time you translating from one language to another but even more so when two languages that are as different as those too.

Not an excuse but its something to keep in mind.

But let me ask you guys.

How is this ME3 related?

Considering all the talk of writing quality amongst the various mass effect games and all the talk of how mass effect 3 will or won't live up to certain standards, I'd say it's all very much related.

Not really.  The topic is too broad to be Mass Effect 3 related.

Video game writing is almost universally terrible.  If you like the writing in video games, I suggest watching a movie or better yet, reading a book.  Any of them, really, since your standards are ridiculously low.

I say almost* because a few old RPGs and Adventure games had good writing.  Specifically coming to mind are Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape Torment.

He says video game writing is bad and then suggests watching a movie.

Really? The poor mans's book? You don't watch movie's for their story.

Panzer Dragoon Saga
The Longest Journey

I can't really think of any other games I've played where I found the writing to be "exceptionally" good.

I gave my top five earlier in the thread, but I feel I should give an Honorable Mention to Alpha Protocol. The way the game changes in subtle and not so subtle ways based on your behavior much have been a huge undertaking. Not to mention the colorful cast of characters

In no particular order and off the top of my head, the Legacy of Kain series, Fallout: New Vegas, Deus Ex series, Bioshock, Final Fantasy VI/VII and Half-Life.

How is this topic still here. I've seen topics that are closer to Mass Effect get locked for not being Mass Effect 3 related.

I suppose by "best written" the OP means which ever we think has the most engrossing story. In that case:

KoTOR
FFXIII
ME2
Halo CE-3

Anything Japanese. (There may be alot of JRPG cliche's, but they're still well-written)
Anything Bioware. (Yes, even DA2)

I'll throw Dark Souls out there as well, with its creepy npcs and minimalist story-telling. Honestly, piecing together the events of the story is probably harder than the gameplay.

Best written ever?

Not really a game in and of itself, but Neverwinter Nights II: Mask of the Betrayer was awesomely written.

Maybe Starflight?  Though it's honestly hard for me to say why I loved Starflight so much.

Just for fun:
"Yep, Starflight was a key inspiration for the ME series. It's now older than some ME3 team members!" - Casey Hudson

It was the shock ending. As long as I live, I will never forget that last reveal.

I started playing RPGs in the PS1 era and to this day these are the games that I still hold high in terms of story telling:

Final Fantasy VII, VIII
Xenogears
Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger
Metal Gear Solid 1,2 and 3

In this gen:

Mass Effect 1
Lost Odyssey (this game is so underrated, it's a shame)
The Witcher 1 and 2
Deus Ex: HR
Dragon Age Origins
Bioshock
Uncharted 2
Heavy Rain

I think the Mass Effect series could learn a thing or two from Deus Ex...

Mass Effect and Dragon Age aside-

Bioshock
- "A man chooses, a slave obeys."

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
-"I'm the lay of your life, your salvation and your curse"

Silent Hill 2
- "In my restless dreams, I see that town."

Legend of Dragoon
-...Ok this one had some pretty laughable dialogue, but it was one of the first big fantasy epics of my childhood.

Portal 2
"-Lemons."

Mass Effect as a whole.
Bioshock

Both tugged at heartstrings, plus were pretty awesome

Can't think of anything else...

I forgot to mention Bioschock. That story was brillant. I just couldn't adam and eve what they did to the main character.

Mass Effect of course

Mac Walters - Yeah, it’s a war, yeah it’s got giant robots we get to shoot in the face, but there is a human side to the story.

Not in any order but these are the ones off the top of my head with a small explanation:
  • Kotor 1&2 (Plot-twist in one along with the well written Characters, 2 had a great storyline despite being unfinished, it also gave Revan depth which was removed in the book, Revan.)
  • Planescape Torment (What more can I say other than fantastic)
  • Dragon Age: Origins (Despite dips in certain areas, the finally was one of the most engaging experiences ever).
  • Red Dead Redemption (A dark gritty western with an ending that made my jaw drop off)
  • Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption (Despite suffering from awful controls and being outdated in the RPG sector, the story was fantastic, a tale of love/humanity over an 800 year period).
  • The Darkness (Clumsy FPS, but the writing was top notch with a tearful ending)
  • Fallout Series ( Each one tells a great story).
  • Deus Ex (The original is a classic, the sequel and remake, uh not so much)
  • Baldurs Gate series (Bioware sees me well on this list)
  • Morrowind (Great lead upto and finish)
That's pretty much all I can think of at the moment, but I tend to favour games these days with immersion where I can get lost in ala The Elder Scrolls
