Hi,
My area preview appears blue when I load up an area in the toolset. I can barely see the Start Point.
I've just installed the game on a Windows 7 64bit system. As the install was finishing up, it told me that it wouldn't run on 64bit, but I was able to run the game fine when I located the .exe files. I created a character and started the OC, and the game looks great. But when I load up the toolset I have all this foggy blueness. I realize I'm looking straight down at what should be the ground, and can move the camera to see the skybox. Things are blue even if I bake and run the module from the toolset.
I'm pretty sure I'm using directx 11, and I've read on here that directx 9 is needed. Is this true? Won't my other games suffer if I revert to a previous version of directx?

Yes - the toolset definitely needs Directx 9. Directx 11 is so different to Directx 9 that both will sit quite happily on your computer without comflicting with each other. They are essentially two different installations, rather than one overwriting the other.

This sounds silly but I'm not sure how much experience you have with the toolset -- have you tried zooming the camera in? The toolset has a relatively low draw distance and it puts a blue plane at said distance.
It confused the heck out of me back in 2006!

Maybe you have the FarPlane set too close in the View/Options... Graphics? Mine is at 1000. (Or you could just turn it off.)

Turn off the fog and area far plane, just to be sure. I think DirectX 9.0c installs with the toolset.

Sorry, I should have said I've been playing and tinkering with the toolset since NWN1, but that was on an older desktop, now I'm on a laptop. I worked on a Hunger & Thirst set of scripts with NWN2, but never finished. I just bought the full collection.
My FarPlane is 1000. Zooming has no effect; there are no graphics, besides the skybox, in the preview area. When I bake and run, I appear in a place with no textures. My character appears textured for a sec, but then becomes ghostlike. I see a shadowed version of him.
Remembering that Civ V asks if I want to play in directx9, I fired it up, and man did that make the graphics look like poop. The "fog of war" was replaced by solid black hexagons.
So, it looks like I have directx9, but I still can't see the textures for NWN2 unless I'm actually playing the game. I guess if I can't run the toolset, at least I know that I can run the toolset for NWN1. I was really looking forward to building with this more evolved version of the Aurora though.
I'm using a NVIDIA GeForce 9400. Driver is up to date.
Anyone have any ideas?

Also, I just created an interior area and I can see the graphics when I place the tiles down.

And when I Verify my module now that I have an interior area, it moved the Start Point to that area on its own. Still, I can't see anything in the exterior area I created.

Doesn't win764 have a "run as mode" as in run in win XP mode? The NWN2 toolset was designed to run under win XP.
As a side note I installed win7 under 32 bit and I have had no problems with the newest of games including the olde NWN2 toolset.

@Morbane: Thanks for the response. I'll try "run as mode" this evening, but I still don't understand why I can see textures for the interior tilesets, but no textures for the exterior areas I create. I should have baked and tested the interior area I created too (to see if the "run module" worked), but I was just so frustrated I shut the program down for the night. If this doesn't work, I guess I'll start another threat that has a more specific title that a moderator might look at, rather than the very generic title I picked "Toolset Question".

I'm wondering if this is a driver issue? Does the current driver have NWN2 problems again? Nvidia is renowned for not being compatible at times with certain NWN2 setups (I know I had problems before upgrading to an ATI card recently).
I would run the toolset as an administrator with XP sp2/3 compatibility checked in the launch properties. I would then start unchecking everything from fog to shadows, etc. until it either worked or didn't.
Have you run the DirectX setup off the installation disk (or if you use Steam in the DirectX folder)?
Also, are you seeing a plain blue substitute texture over the terrain instead of the default grass or is it not even rendering/responding to the terrain brush tools?

@Mad.Hatter: I'm not at all experienced in running programs in different modes (admin with XP and checking launch properties), but I'm definitely willing to look into this further. I'm using a disk, so I'll check to see if I can run directx from it.
I'd have to say the blue I'm seeing isn't a substitute texture, but rather a lack of texture at all. There is something there, because I can raise and lower the ground with the toolset, but you can barely tell anything is happening. I'll snap some pics tonight and post them on here, but the best way for me to describe it is like its a lack of any texture, just a muddy blue color (not fog as far as I can tell) where the texture would be. Creatures, when placed on the map appear, but also have no textures. They look like ghosts. Even the PC looks like a ghost if you bake and run the module. I can lay down grass and ground textures, but none of them show up in the area preview when I'm painting.
Interior area have no problem rendering, its just the exterior ones.

@xxlin9xx: I had to go to C Drive > Program Files > Atari... and from there go into the NWN2 folder and locate the Toolset .exe, which I pinned to my Taskbar and Start Menu.

biggislims,
I would do the following two things:
1. "Explore" the disk so you can look at the files on the disk. Find the DirectX folder and run the setup.exe that is inside that folder.
2. Find the nwn2toolset.exe in your installation folder on your hard drive (not a shortcut to it). Right click on that and go to Properties > Compatibility tab and check the boxes that say "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and "Run this program as an administrator".

Thanks for the instructions. 15 min till the work day ends, and I'll check into both of these suggestions.

Okay,
I've managed to change the compatibility of the toolset for both XP2 and XP3,
and run the program in administrator, but it’s still not working.
And I can’t find directx on this NWN disc. There are a bunch
of zip files and I’ve looked in them all and can’t find anything that looks
like it is related to directx. I know, that’s weird.
I tried to check the second disk, but it fails to load. It
tries to load what’s on the disk, but it just clicks and clicks. The bar slowly
fills up with green, but as it reaches the end it slows until you can’t see any
change.
I tried to post some pics of my screen, but I couldn't figure out how to add an image to this post. I could upload them to my tumblr account and provide links if you think its worth seeing.

This may seem dumb, but I just went and turned the SKY off in the toolset and I can see the ground now. I had already turned off fog, but nothing had happened. I didn't think to turn off the SKY because it didn't seem related, but that definitely solved my problem. Now that I went back and turned it back on, it still lets me see the preview window fine. Running the module worked fine too.
Thanks for all the help guys.
Actually, it looks like you have to go in and add a Sky Ring for it to stay visible, otherwise the area just returns to blue ghost mode, in the preview area and in the game after the area is baked and the module is run/tested.

Well, yeah - if you don't have a sky ring then all there is to show is blue (or whatever colour you change that to)....
