Interesting article on what happens when criticism goes too far.  Figured it should posted here with the tone of some of the posts in the name of criticsm of Mass Effect 3.  Especially since the target of the attack in the article is a Bioware employee.

...because someone asked nicely.

Has nothing to do with entitlement and everything to do with being able to say whatever you want from the behind a screen name.

And it's not limited to people on gaming forums.

There is always a worse fanbase out there. Bioware's probably ranks pretty high up there though.

According to what I was able to garner, part of this rage also came to be because people complained someone was censoring their posts, what, naturally, fueled the fires even more. Is that so?

This is true for everything people can be fans of. Not just video games. I've seen it for movies, TV shows, music, books, and everything else under the sun.

Personally, I think ME3 having 3 choices (action/roleplaying/story) is awesome. It's better to be inclusive. Let everyone play the game how they want to and enjoy it how they want to. I don't think I'll ever use the action or story modes, but I can certainly understand the appeal of those particular modes for people who might only like certain aspects of the game.

I think what gamers had to say about Hepler was terrible. Even worse was the backlash they gave Bioware as a company. Some video game developers simply don't listen to the gamers. Bioware is one of the few video game developers I've seen that cares what their fans think and try to take their ideas into account. How much I do or don't like Bioware is irrelevant. This is fact. They are interacting with us all the time on these forums and you can see from game to game the changes they try to incorporate. As a long time gamer (I've been gaming for 25 years, longer than some people here have been alive) I very much appreciate that they do that.

Plus, honestly, do people even know what Jennifer Hepler worked on in particular story wise? No.

When they(so called gamers) start using profanity, religion, culture and gender in their responses, I just put it down to nutters who have access to the internet.

I love how having expectations is now considered to be "entitlement mentality" How sad is that, were being derided for having basic expectations on things were paying 60+ dollars for.

You take videogames too damn seriously. It's no reason to treat people like s**t because you don't like the demo.

Not responsible. I'm just saying that if thats the sort of work they produce they make it easy for people to take them to task. Honestly comments like wanting to remove the gameplay from games really don't help either. Yes it's taken too far and I don't condone it. But its not a one way street.

You buy the game and get what the developer/ publisher give you. Some of the posts concerning the number of collector edition copies available, DLC, etc have been downright rude. I agree with Aaleel, a lot of it comes from the fact that people can hide behind a screen name but the incident in the Gamespot article is beyond the pale. How can you honestly think anyone has the right to do that.

Criticism is one thing; heck I still think Bioware tossed the Mass Effect fans out chasing Battlefield and Gears of War fans. My point is if you have criticism, make it, support it, and keep it as civil as you would be if you actually faced the person you are criticizing.

That's all I have to say about that.

Nah, I have to agree, the Bioware fanbase is worse than Star Wars and Fallout.

I've seen all too many of these "entitled gamers" pop up here on BSN in the last few weeks, more since the demo was released or have these nut bags always been here? Either way this is disgusting & if one of these trolls post something here I make damn sure that I get to harangue them back!

You can have expectations, but BioWare still own the IP & can make the game how they want. They like to accomodate their base as much as possible but that can't always be the case, a game designed by committee would be atrocious. In the end this does not give people the right to demand a list of changes as long as my..... ahem...!

Learn to deal with it or go away. Simple!

Agreed add in the fact that she has nothing to with the ME games. Unfortunately that's the nature of the internet while Bioware has some of the best fans around for the most part, I'm sure there is some in the population that would fall into the worst fan group.

If she was attacking someone, then you could use an argument like that. But attacking her because she's got ideas you don't like is not okay. It's pretty f**ked up for people to sit behind thier computer screens with the intent of antagonizing a stranger they don't like. If they don't like the demo do what I'm doing and wait until you know more about the game before spending sixty dollars. It's senseless to buy something knowing nothing about it only to be upset that you don't agree with the content.

Just wow.
An her idea isn't bad, certainly would make playing ME 1 & 2 quicker as I could just skip the combat and focus on setting up a character.
