Proof that you can't win with some people:  Jennifer Hepler gets mud slinged at her for saying games need more narrative focus, while David Jaffe gets mud slinged at him for saying games need less of it.

You assume it is the same people who are mud slinging on both occasions.

Narritive is good but that does not mean game play should be sacrificed. A good story keeps me engaged and good gameplay holds it all together.

Exactly! Mass Effect is about the combination of 3 key elements: Combat, RPG, and Story. In ME1 the story was good, as were the RPG elements, but the combat left alot to be desired. In ME2, the combat was improved, the story (In my opinion) was about on par with ME1, but the RPG elements were sacrificed.

In ME3, so far the combat and RPG are good. It's up to Bioware to fill the most important part now, the story. I have faith in Bioware for this, but it remains to be seen if it matches (And hopefully exceeds, it is the finale of Shepard's story) the bar of quality set by the two games before.

Bioware made it who else would you blame?

Try parodying this in the same way.

Forget what I said, I wasn't paying attention.

No problem.

I think people like you need a lesson manners.  Just because you don't like how a game turns out doesn't mean you can insult people over it.

And did you know that the DA2 writing team is the SAME team as the DAO team?

And the head of the DAO team was responsible for writing one of Bioware's most  beloved characters?

Guess they don't need writing lessons...

I thought the guy in charge of DAO left because he could not accept what they wanted to do in the sequel.

You can read vituperative attacks on public figures anywhere on the Internet, but it's strange that she's become known and singled out like this. Game developers are a pretty anonymous lot. Sure Laidlaw and Gaider were attacked, but it was never in such personal terms and was instead usually a critique of their work, any ad hominem comments tended to be childish and anodyne. Seems to me that there's undeniable misogyny at play here

Hah! you think Bioware fanbase is bad? Go to the World of warcraft forums, Majority of the threads are verbal attacks on other players or Blizzard employees or rather blizzard itself. Though many of them get shut down before they even get started, no matter what page or sub forum you go to theres ALWAYS a thread attacking someone or the company for some stupid reason.

But with that aside I can't believe that person would go off the deep end just because of what she said, they must have serious mental issues. She doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. That tool should be banned from the internet.

I don't think it's just a problem with gamers, I think it's a problem with society in general.

This video sums it up quite nicely.

He was a gameplay designer, and that's not why he left.

So no, the -writing- team was the same.  Hepler herself wrote Orzammar and the Deep Roads, Hespith and the Broodmother and the Anvil of the Void etc.

A good sequence too, if a little long. Probably an example where a skip combat button might have had appeal. Image IPB

That was the lead designer, NOT the senior writer.  David Gaider has been lead in both games and was heavily influential for the narrative for both.

A lot of the people commenting on the Gamespot article support the torrent of abuse she received. It's sickening.

Has there been one single post in this thread that has ANY relevance to Mass Effect 3...it is an interesting topic but when threads that actually pertain to ME3 get closed it makes you wonder what "end of line, not ME3 related" actually means?

I mean, have you guys seen the kpop fandoms? beyond name calling, the 'trolls' have literally tried to kill some of these singers and performers, started petitions to get people to kill themselves. its pretty bad.

I have to agree, when it comes to fanbases -nothing- tops K-Pop fans for sheer entitlement and crazy. Korean celebrities can't date because it gives their delusional fans the impression that they might not be able to have them all to themselves. They pretty much live in a prison with their lives dictated by their fanbase. Scary stuff.

right? whats worse is that the Music Agencies feed the entitlement more than any other company I've ever seen, even Bioware with their constant comments on this forum, trying to do all they can for the fans.
so I guess, the more they give, the more they take?

Hepler showed her throat to gain some sympathy and this is what happens. The people attacking her may be douchebags, but she's handled it poorly.

And you're a douche for suggesting that someone is deliberatly being advantageous about being mistreated

That is because they think they are internet tough guys but they would run away crying if they were ever confronted physically.

Hepler also wrote Anders (and I love how he is made intentionally annoying), Sebastian, BETHANY, Leandra, and wrote the storyline for the Legacy DLC.

She is actually one of Bioware's BETTER writers. In fact, I love how subtle she made Bethany.

Although the best writer for DAII was Mary Kirby, responsible for Varric and Merrill.

Personally, I think she didn't need to play into the the whole thing. A visit to any forum would make me lose faith in humanity if I didn't consider the context.

Just wow.
An her idea isn't bad, certainly would make playing ME 1 & 2 quicker as I could just skip the combat and focus on setting up a character.

This is a brilliant idea.  I completely agree with this.  I guess we have Genesis (Mass Effect 2 comic) for that but I would like to be able to just go through the conversations.

On the whole subject of entitlement, I don't think its entitled to want what you payed for. If I want to play Mass Effect 3 in its entirety, I have to preorder the game from multiple sources and buy action figures as well as gaming peripherals. All this announced DLC before the game is even out really rubs me the wrong way. The statement from David Silverman about how newcomers to to Mass Effect 3 will be a great place to start worries me as well. Why should the third game in a series have to accommodate newbies when the whole point of Mass Effect in the first place was keeping your save's and seeing choices you made pan out.
I've been a fan for almost 10 yrs. I feel betrayed more than anything.

But what if you just want to play ME2 or ME3? Being able to do just conversations, you can speed through playthroughs and import saves into the next game. It's a good idea for games that transfer saves into the next game like BW capitalized on. It actually would've been helpful it they added this in ME1 or DAO and would've increased replayability in ME2 and DA2.

Varric and Merrill had the same writer? Explains why they were by far my two favourites.

Actually, most of my favourite characters in ME were also all worked on by the same writer. Obviously I have a tendency to greatly prefer characters written by some writers than others.

Yeah, I hate the Mako sequences.
