It's hard to imagine it being tied to the ME2 Import Utility, either. I'm not sure if it automatically disappeared or if I accidentally deleted it, but I didn't get my Import Utility file back on my hard drive until I tried to import a ME1 save again and exited the game before saving manually. Since then (a couple hours ago), I haven't received the error message. But, it definitely didn't start for me until the dashboard update.

This is starting to make no sense. How when I only have my Gamertag and my saves from ME1 and ME2 on my USB I have no errors.

Time is ticking...

Does that also work with the cloud save feature?

Or maybe that is the culprit. Just imagine. :pinched:

I have never used the cloud save feature.

Try importing another character, also what are the exact steps you took.

I toyed around with the Cloud Save feature, but used it for other, non ME saves.

Maybe the feature silently copied my GT to it (it would coincede with the dashboard update) and logs this in prior to my HDD account, causing al lthe annoying messages. Plus, since the cloud does not have the DLC's stored, it would be an explaination for the other errors.

Does that even make sense? Can't test this right now, xbox is occupied.

When you can get on your Xbox and try, let us know how you get on.

Well, for some reason I didn't have any Import Utility item on my hard drive (even though I had previously imported four saved games). Every time I had experimented with it (including the first time importing those saves), I would get the sign-in error during import, and then after whenever I started up the game. Today, I used the utility to import one saved game, unsuccessfully, was forced to restart, and tried again. It worked that time, and while Miranda was still talking to the Illusive Man, I quit to the dashboard. I checked my hard drive, and the Import Utility was present with a save of the file I just imported. I loaded up ME2 again, no sign-in error, tried importing a different save, still no sign-in error, and quit out at the same spot. I checked my hard drive again, and there was still only one save file inside the Import Utility, and now it was for the second file I imported. I repeated this two more times with the same results, and haven't had an error message since. Ever since this problem happened, though, every time I restart using the sign-in error window, the message goes away for a few hours (regardless if I turn off my console). So, it might still come back.

EDIT: I definitely got the same error again on both ME2 and the ME3 demo a little while later. So, the functionality of the Import Utility doesn't seem to be a cause anymore.

That isn't really how the cloud stuff works, it wouldn't copy your GT to it, and dlc is stored there. It's mostly just used as another device you can use to save games that you can access from any console. The reason it may be the culprit, though, is that ME2 checks for saved games across all devices, and may not be set up properly to check the cloud storage for saved games, regardless if there are any there.

EDIT: I just got a piece of advice from Xbox twitter support saying to turn off cloud storage and see if that works.

And this?

In this thread they say:
"Cloud Storage for Game Saves and LIVE Profile. Here at Xbox LIVE we
listen to your feedback. We are making it easier for you to sign into
your Xbox LIVE account from any console at any time to access your game
saves and full profile,[...]

"If you look at the login screen on bootup or after pressing the guide
button it gives you the option to download a profile. Surely that has to
be it. But how you upload the profile is a mystery."

I saw in another thread that a guy had his profile on an USB stick, so any secondary save device could confuse the game...?

Unless someone says they are having this error despite never moving their profile/saves from the HDD.

PS: The second xbox account has cloud storage disabled.

That'd match up with the tweet.

Will try it out as soon as I can assume direct control of the xbox.

When a game accesses your profile, it will always be from a local device. The fact that it is in the cloud means you can download your profile to any console and sign into it from any console. If it were being accessed from the cloud, you wouldn't have to download it. You don't have to upload your profile to the cloud because Microsoft already has all your achievement and played game data on their servers. When you download your profile from the cloud, it makes a copy of your profile on that console, the same as recovering your GT before the update. When a game is accessing your profile, it only does so from the device it was downloaded to, and the "cloud" isn't one of those devices; unlike when a game accesses saves, it could read a save from the cloud.

Sorry, I hope that wasn't too confusing. I still don't know if this could be the problem or not. I know people who have accessed their profiles on different consoles, and have some saves in the cloud, and still not had this problem with ME2. So, I think it might have something to do with the import utility, and maybe its interaction with cloud saves (although I think it only reads files that have been saved to the console once ME1 was completed, and don't show up on the hard drive). But, again, I don't know how that would impact the ME3 demo.

EDIT: I updated my above post, btw. I still recieve the error after fiddling with the Import Utility.

I just tried disabling my cloud storage and I get the same error in both ME2 and the ME3 demo.

I should have mentioned it earlier but I did turn on cloud storage after the update. Didn't occur to me since I basically just turned it on and then off again, never actually used it to save anything and now even though it's turned off I still get the same problem.
So if it is the Cloud business that caused it then turning it off surely doesn't fix it.

Here's what I did:

Deleted save files from 2 games from the cloud. Disabled Cloud Storage.
Restarted Xbox
Bypassed the log-in on the dashboard with B-button

Started the ME 3 demo and Mass Effect 2 afterwards, and to my surprise,  the message no longer pops up - but for this to work, all profiles must be signed out before starting the game. So logging in when the game prompts me to yields positive results. Starting the game while already signed in will produce this error again.

For Mass Effect 2, this also lets me import a ME 1 save file without further voodoo.

I've already had this happen with another game, Defense Grid, the game would freeze the xbox entirely even instead of throwing out an error message. And it happens precisely and consecutively since then, to this day.

EDIT: I mean the dashboard update. It really messed a few games up.

Yeah, being offline before starting the game has worked to avoid this error message and lets people import. But, it's not really a permanent solution. I wish someone from Bioware or EA would step in and give us a little guidance.

DA:O and DA][ do not have this issue (just to narrow down the possibilities) despite accessing the EA account.

Also cleared the xbox cache, same results as in my previous post.

So for me, cloud storage caused it, and is only partially fixable after disabling it. Would love to know what the Microsoft guys have to say about that...

Battlefield 3 does not have the issue, either. The thing is, you can get into ME2 and the ME3 demo with cloud storage enabled as long as you're not connected to the internet. It must have something to do with communication to EA servers for ME2 and 3, because I never did and still do not have the issue with ME1.

Hi i have also had this problem but i have had it since day one of getting my mass effect 2 which was way before the new dashboard. I have tried everything on this thread and more but still the same error. Something i have noticed is that EA havent been all that good with servers in the first place so i've got a strong feeling the problem is on their end whether they like to admit it or not.

When I talked with EA support multiple times, they said there weren't any problems with my EA account, but at this point I have no idea what could keep causing the message to show up every time.

The only way this can be a hardware issue is if you try get a new hard drive (Or re-format a hard drive) and then see if the error still occurs when you start-up and import characters. If the error does not occur it would mean that its the only file no one can do anything with. The "invisible file".

I have some questions:

1) When the error asks you to restart does it sometimes ask you to Log into your EA Account?

2) Why would not being able to connect to a server prevent you from importing your character?

3) Does anyone know how to access the "invisible file"?

4) What type of Xbox are you playing on Slim, Elite etc?

1) Yes, especially when moving my saves to and from a USB. But, only sometimes.
2) No idea. Doesn't seem likely, unless EA tracks your imports.
3) Unless you were to format the hard drive, I'm not sure how you'd manipulate that type of file.
4) I have been playing on a Slim.

Intresting, I am also playing on a Slim. Also I decided to go along with error messages when starting the game and importing a character. When asked me to restart I kept restarting and then twice it let me import my save.

UPDATE: Just imported my character again successfully.

Sudden thought when I deleted the game from my hard drive with the downloadable content and moved both ME1 and ME2 saves to a USB Stick along with the ME2 Importer. I still got the error. However the only file I could not delete was the hidden file.

So maybe just maybe the hidden file is corrupted.

Also just imported another save successfully, however I am still getting the error at start-up, sometimes is asks me to log in to my EA account aswell.

I have just had success again.
