I pick the side where you delete this post and put it in the spoilers forum where it belongs. That side always wins.

I didn't trust the girl saying that he was going to become a tranquil. So I went to Irving to ask if this was true, but instead he recruited me to catch them. I never did get a straight answer whether or not Jowan was definitely going to be made a tranquil. I'm assuming it was going to happen, but I would have liked some dialogue from Irving saying so or explaining to me why. Oh well.

I always choose to help Jowan. For some reason, the First Enchanter seems so...evil in this quest. I mean his voice, and the way he talks. If you refuse to help him, he just forces you to do it anyway. For the good of the Circle, huh? Creepy.

If you tell Irving that Lily mentioned it, he kind of half admits to it. I don't remember the exact wording but it's there. The only way picking between Jowan and Irving really affects gameplay is how they treat you at the end of the origin and then maybe when you go back to rescue the Circle. I played a total snitch so they all loved me, except Jowan he hated my guts.Posted Image

*edit*You dont' have to go to Irving btw, you can just go straight to Owain, then go to the Senior Enchanter to get the form signed. She's in the lab, you'll have to kill some spiders but it's an easy way to get some experience on the side. Irving won't find out till the very end.

Circle, because my character was a naive fool who seriously thought that she could somehow talk him out of his foolish idea and somehow show Irving that this reversal somehow warranted Jowan being given a second chance. She's not exactly the brightest crayon in the box sometimes I'll admit. Then again, she was honestly suspicious of anyone asking her to take such risks out of friendship after what happened the night before with Mouse during the Harrowing. Jowan really should have waited a few days before asking honestly.

Granted, the fact that my previous playthrough as a City Elf left me with a rather bad impression of Jowan might have played a small role in my decision.

If you follow the dialog options it seems fairly apparent that he was if not coming right out and saying it (which I think Irving does say when you press it, but been a while since I did mage). At the very least I remember him saying that she should not have told him much less that she should not have know about it.

That's why I never talked to the 1st enchanter about it. He already seemed to know anyway since I DID play both angles. Hmmm... i need to make another mage and be really dastardly.  Posted Image

On my first playthrough, I also didn't talk to him. I didn't even know you could do that. On my second however, I did. And, well, it was creepy. Very creepy. I mean, how the hell did he even know about Jowan and Lily? Is he some kind of crazy stalker or what? Does he have nothing better to do than to spy on his students and their affairs? :P

The Circle. Jowan struck me as a huge crybaby as soon as I was introduced to him, so I had no problems helping the circle catch him.

*SPOILERS* On one runthrough, I went to Irving and he explained it pretty clearly. IIRC, Jowan was suspected of being a blood mage and thus was going to be made tranquil. Since there was a "conspiracy" w/ Lily trying to help him escape, they needed to be caught in the act. (odd that Duncan picks you no matter who you betray). I went w/ Jowan on the next one, as it made me feel a little less dirty.

Wow. And suddenly the tower looks much less secure. Not even the abominations seem all that scary anymore. Irving's got his eyes everywhere.

Add to that the fact that Gregoir also has eyes around every corner and you have one huge Big Brother catastrophe on your hands... I hope they at least were courteous enough not to spy in the washrooms...

I think I'll have to agree on the "crybaby" part. Still, he was kind of cute in his own way, and my character was supposed to have a little crush on him, so I had to help him, no matter what :P

What's scary to me is that they can make people tranquils just because they "think" they are doing something wrong.  Now he was dabbling in it, but still what if he wasn't, they didn't seem to have any proof and were going to tranquil him anyways....creepy! I personally don't think you have to be "evil" to be a blood mage, but then I don't read all the codex stuff so maybe I'm wrong...won't be the first time... or the last. :P

I think there's nothing wrong with blood magic, just as long as you don't use the blood of others. I also highly disliked what they were doing to some of the mages there. You either survive the Harrowing, die, or be made tranquil. Some choices! Irving isn't the only creepy thing about the Circle, it seems. That's just another good reason to help Jowan escape this place.

The first time around I sided with Jowan. But the next time I rolled a mage, I questioned whether or not my character would be willing to give up everything she had worked for to help puppy love along, and I determined that she wouldn't, especially after just completing her Harrowing. With this thought in mind, I never sided with him again.

This is just a really good example of what happens when you let religion control everything...

Were you RPing the crush or was it hinted at in the origins story?  I don't recall ever having dialogue suggesting such, so I'm curious.

Oh, it's actually hinted at. Shortly after Jowan tells the PC about Lily, you get an option to ask him about how he met her. And if you're playing a FemPC, you get to say something like: "Jowan, why didn't the two of us ever...." It actually came as a surprise to me at first. Haha, that's all there is to it.

Ah, I remember that now.  I remember thinking why the hell would this supposed child prodigy have any interest in this dope of a guy, so I ignored it.

I agree. The Chantry has way too much control over the Circle. And, well everything. But that's just my opinion. They're ordering the mages around whenever they can. Somehow I can understand Irving's motivations for ordering the PC to betray Jowan. He wanted to expose Lily as some kind of traitor, to prove to Gregoir that the Chantry isn't always right. Still, the way he did it was just...I don't know. Speaking with this "ominous old man with an evil plan to take over the world!" voice of his just gave me the creeps.

Well Keep in mind that when Irvine purposed the plan it was just going to be they catch the thieves redhanded.  That would have been the extend of the issue.  He could even use the fact Jowan was misled by a Chantry initiate as bargin chip for lessen Jowan's punishment.

Jowan's escape and subsequent status as a malficarum was [possibly] unanticipated.

Ha! I wanted to ignore it as well. My character would certainly never mention such a thing casually, especially not when Jowan's girlfriend is standing right in front of her! Still, it was too tempting. Waaay too tempting.
