Seriously, do people not know what "co-op" stands for?

I've been through so many matches that are lucky to make it to wave 5 because NO ONE HAS THEIR FREAKIN' MICROPHONE TURNED ON TO FREAKIN' COMMUNICATE and... wait for it... COORDINATE!!!!!!!

God forbid you talk to people and tell them,

"Hey, there's a turret around that corner!"

"Look out for that Phantom behind you!"

"Don't shoot your rocket at that Atlas, I got it!"

"Please help me flank this Guardian!"

"Help me take out this Nemesis sniper!"

"I got the next terminal being hacked, cover me!"

IS IT SO HARD?!?!?!

Seriously, the number of people who are not mic'ed is just....

On the PC version, it shows you whether someone has a microphone. Nearly everyone does, yet most people will never talk.

I've been through so many matches that have made it to complete extraction without mics

In fact, the vast majority of the time people either don't have mics or have them but don't talk, and we still manage to work pretty damn well as a team.

People might not have the money for mics. Or have had consistently bad experiences with voice chat. I won't bore anyone with my own sob story, but I'm extremely hesitant to speak up with my own mic unless the people chatting seem mature enough.

Anyway, I've used it once, maybe twice, tops, and have rarely had trouble coordinating with my teammates - with the caveat that I haven't gone for Gold yet, which I hear almost 100% requires mics.

To be fair, when you hack a terminal your character will usually say cover me.

Anyway, I don't have a mic and most of the people I play with (randoms) don't either. It's never been much of a problem and on Bronze I consistently make it to extraction. I've only played a few times on Silver but I've made it pretty far as long as everyone's leveled and watching each others back. The one time someone talked on a mic consistently he kept badgering everyone to get on a mic while cursing and everyone just decided to drop. :/

I mean, on silver and bronze its not really needed if everyone sticks together. On Gold its probably a prerequisite to have a mic, sure, but I don't play gold yet so...

On Bronze, it doesn't really matter.

On Silver, you can get away with no having a mic if the other players in the lobby are pretty well equipped and experienced.

On gold, fuhgeddaboutit

I've finished gold multiple times on teams where no one used mics.

Sure, I've made it through some matches without saying a word but it just helps IMO. To be honest, there have been those matches where people are chatting up a storm and telling everyone what they're doing and we're lucky to make it to wave 8 but we die not because of poor communication but because of bad luck or poor game play choices. Unless you run into that group that knows exactly what to do in every situation and knows how to play their character to its strengths then you're sort of screwed it seems as far as completing the mission. It's easy to wing it on bronze but on silver or gold you really got to have a group that knows what they're doing be it from talking to each other or being fortunate to have a group that is silent but knows how to play to its strengths.

I use my mic sparsely. I find that in the vast majority of games work fine anyways without voice chat and I rarely find anything that needs to be said in terms of coop and being successful.

I'm only just now about to start doing golds, though. I've tried it once and it ended up being a complete 3 man, and yeah, one other dude was talkative in the match, but still all 3 of us were decent enough that we were working well together regardless. We almost finished it with just the three of us, but got unlucky towards the end of the 10th round.

I don't like to talk to random people on XBL that much. If I were playing with friends or gold then sure.

I'm on PC and I have a mic even though it's not a great one and I tried every button to talk but it wouldn't work. Then I went to options and configured it which no one told me to do so maybe people should be doing that as well. such a small over sight but I got it working now.

It would really help if Bioware would put a little icon so you know it's working when you hit the button to talk during a game.

I'm going to be honest. There's no one I encounter at random on the internet that I want to talk to. Sorry.

I'll stick to listening to my iPod.

It goes in spurts I guess. I can be with a group that has its stuff together and get multiple extractions in a row and then there are those random groups where I can barely make it to wave 6 let alone to extraction and more often than not, it's those groups that are silent ... hence my rant in the OP.

Maybe it's just a trend of bad luck over the past day or so that has me on this rant but it seems that communicating and actually coordinating helps is all.

We won on gold without using it...
It's not necessary if your pals use common sense and don't do stupid things like using a vanguard as the team's sniper.

I've played my fair share of Call of Duty and Halo matches with a mic. I'm not overly anxious to repeat those horrific experiences with a Mass Effect game. I know it's co-op and not competitive, but I don't want to take the risk.

Besides, most teams I've been with in the co-op can coordinate fine without using mics.

I only use my mic during certain situations, cuing in everyone to the positions of dangers and enemies. I don't leave it on at all times because I dislike talking to people. It seems many of whom I play alongside are wishing a conversation or someone to reply to their odd comments. I just like to play as a squad, and gain familiarity to them, rather than buy into, "OH f***ing Atlas.. Y'know I blah blah blah.. This in that and blah blah..."

I don't use mics. I've gotten up to wave 10 on silver with no one communicating.

Knowing how to coordinate without saying a word>having to shout over a headset to get people to do things.

This is actually a weird occurence I've noticed. I've done plenty of matches in complete silence but the actual number of times I've been in matches where no one had a mic are far fewer. A vast majority of the matches I play through actually do have at least one person with a mic (at least its indicated they have one) but they rarely if ever say anything. Most of the time it's a only a small noise or cough that lets me know they actually have a mic on.

Silver can be done without mics.

Gold...would be very, very difficult but not impossible for the very best players.
