I don't use a mic and I've only heard one person use it when I just started multiplayer. I don't get that far sometimes, but it's just for fun, right?
Also, i would only use it when/if I ever play with friends. And I really only know 4 other people who have played ME before, and one person is on a different platform. =(

Mics are only needed on higher difficulties. At all other times, players are to be commended for not using their mics, and in doing so, avoiding the potential temptation of using homophobic/racist remarks and swearing like a 12 year old.

The collective sanity of humanity thanks you for your contribution.

Sometimes I wish I had a mic, if only to remind people to get their butts back to the Landing Zone on Wave 11. :P

Yeah, you need to be able to speak to each other to work cooperatively.

/sarcasm off.

At any rate, the fact that there's no text chat is atrocious.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the fact that most people on PS3 aren't using mics. I'd much rather lose matches from imperfect coordination than have a bunch of weirdos shouting obscenities.

I can get through waves without using my mic but it feels better to talk to some one so I know that person will watch for enemies who are trying to flank us. Heck I try to make the mic symbol make the lines appear to see if anyone will realize it and say something.

Besides, I've never even heard any useful sounds from mics. It's always either static or idiocy. Heck, sometimes it's both. Thank the Force for muting players on the XBOX.

I always at least listen for commands over the comm channel. Sadly, it's all cerberus chatter. No one else made it. (Lone Survivor +2500)

My mic is on and configured. It just won't work in ME3 for some reason. -PC

I lost everyone on Firebase Ghost in the LZ. Every cerbie was throwing grenades, I holed up in a building nearby, and made a run for the LZ when I made enough of a hole with 10 seconds on the clock.

Firebase White and everyone got held up by Cerberus in the same spot. I was the only one who made it.

It's really just the grenade happy enemies. They really cause alot of deaths, not counting phantoms/turrets.

A female voice attracts way too much attention (in my experience), so I don't really like talking. I only do when I'm with my friends or forum friends.

This for me.

Too many bad experiences when the guys focus on my gender rather than playing the game. There is only so many innapropriate sexual comments and "shouldn't you be in the kitchen?" jokes I can handle.

My usual response to this is asking if the offender's mother is too busy engaging in a certain activity behind some rank bar to be there/make them sandwiches instead.

Probably not the most mature way to handle it, but it's sure as hell hilarious when they get pissed off.

I play on the 360 and the only mic I have is the crappy kind that originally came with the console. I can't hear jack with that mic. I need to eventually get a better one.

We won on gold without using it...
It's not necessary if your pals use common sense and don't do stupid things like using a vanguard as the team's sniper.

I agree here here I remeber when I finaly got a team working together we made it to wave 10 on gold but then died wa but yeah I enjoy talking on xbl :3

I've had more good views on a mic, than anywhere near bad. Almost every time that i've had a 2+ people, myself included using them, it was an utter steamroll, even on silver. All four, and you just have a synergy that you can't best, yes, some folks die, but you obliterate everything remotely trying to get near. Even those crud awful double and triple landing pad sentry nests. Because you can say and distract the turrets for folks to get in, or the obliterate the phatoms the moment they appear. Mic work just improves the game when you get used to calling targets, where you have flankers, even what got you.

Seriously, do people not know what "co-op" stands for?

I've been through so many matches that are lucky to make it to wave 5 because NO ONE HAS THEIR FREAKIN' MICROPHONE TURNED ON TO FREAKIN' COMMUNICATE and... wait for it... COORDINATE!!!!!!!

God forbid you talk to people and tell them,

"Hey, there's a turret around that corner!"

"Look out for that Phantom behind you!"

"Don't shoot your rocket at that Atlas, I got it!"

"Please help me flank this Guardian!"

"Help me take out this Nemesis sniper!"

"I got the next terminal being hacked, cover me!"

IS IT SO HARD?!?!?!

Seriously, the number of people who are not mic'ed is just....

Last thing I want to do on day one of Mass Effect 3 is listen to the L4D2 microphone screamers rage. I'll wait a week before even considering communicating with anyone in-game.

It goes in spurts I guess. I can be with a group that has its stuff together and get multiple extractions in a row and then there are those random groups where I can barely make it to wave 6 let alone to extraction and more often than not, it's those groups that are silent ... hence my rant in the OP.

Maybe it's just a trend of bad luck over the past day or so that has me on this rant but it seems that communicating and actually coordinating helps is all.

It's that varied even if you only play "voiceless" anyway.

Yes a well coordinated team should do better than a non coordinated one. :) but atleast so far in my bronze and silver games it goes ok if just the team tries to keep aware of what eachother is doing.
