I've been through so many matches that have made it to complete extraction without mics
In fact, the vast majority of the time people either don't have mics or have them but don't talk, and we still manage to work pretty damn well as a team.
Pretty much this. I play on Xbox so a lot of the time when I'm pugging, I'm usually in a party with my friends. I still do pretty damn well. Just wish platinum pugs were a lot more smooth though.

On the PC version, it shows you whether someone has a microphone. Nearly everyone does, yet most people will never talk.
My mic icon has been blue since I got the game on release. I got my first mic two months later. I don't know why.
Anyway you can manage to game just fine by sticking around your teammates a bit and watching your own flanks. It's nice if someone coordinates a bit and speaks, but far from necessary I think.

A lot of Creative soundcards will make it look like a person has a mic plugged in when actually they haven't. Mine does this frequently even when my mic is not plugged in.
I use a headset mostly for ME3 MP though and the only time i have it off is if the headset needs to be recharged or if im being retarded and have accidently hit the mute button and not realised (did that yesterday).

Every time a brute was killed he would shout 'SIT DOWN!!!!'
When a banshee screamed he would be like 'OMG SCREEEAMERS!!!'
Then back in the lobby there was a guy with a death guard banner so the overexcited guy was all like 'OMG DUUUUDE THATS ONE BADASS BANNNER U GOT OMG OMG!!!!'
Not sure if it was all genuine or just trolling
I definitely prefer a silent party over people who overuse their mic but then again on silver and up it's extremely useful & a thanks for helping someone is always nice

This is actually a weird occurence I've noticed. I've done plenty of matches in complete silence but the actual number of times I've been in matches where no one had a mic are far fewer. A vast majority of the matches I play through actually do have at least one person with a mic (at least its indicated they have one) but they rarely if ever say anything. Most of the time it's a only a small noise or cough that lets me know they actually have a mic on.Mesina2 wrote...
People are shy.
Actually, in such cases, I think it's more a case of plugging in the headset and then throwing it off to the side so they CAN'T hear what anyone might be saying.
I do this when I don't want my young son exposed to a sudden expetive deleted erupting unexpectedly from the TV. It's also useful for those instances when some fool has their mic turned on without muting their TV--holy feedback batman!!!

Anyway, I've used it once, maybe twice, tops, and have rarely had trouble coordinating with my teammates - with the caveat that I haven't gone for Gold yet, which I hear almost 100% requires mics.
It was only after reading this that I realized this thread is a year old

I'm going to be honest. There's no one I encounter at random on the internet that I want to talk to. Sorry.
I'll stick to listening to my iPod.
this but i am usually in a group of friends, but if i am not my music is blasting mic off. whenever i have my mic on all i hear is cying about kill steals cuz i got the b.e. or reave took my kill blah blah. now if i see an enemy almost dead that someone is working on, i usually stop if the person has it under controll but if it is messing up the team, like a geth prime stunning everyone every 3 secs i will put in shot to kill it so we can move on.

Haven't been in a successful platinum pug yet, but the failure isn't to do with lack of communication.

The TV in the background, the air conditioner in the room, the conversation of your family, the constant loud barking of your dogs, especially the deep resonant baying of your bluetick hound in the backyard - that's all stuff everybody loves to hear as they play.
But if you turn down the sensitivity, all everyone hears is, "thsphmmdmhrm" when you speak, instead of "There's a Phantom down here."
There's no good middle ground, so I usually don't turn on my mic unless the conditions are right.

Oh, it was you who revived this thread.
I play on Xbox but don't use a mic and don't see the necessity for one.
