I talked a few times but nobody really responds, so I don't bother anymore. There isn't too much to say anyway. The game is face paced enough that the time it takes to relay any message worth relaying, they usually have the info by then anyway (or it is no longer relevant).

After all I can't just say "Phantom behind you" when there are four people in the group, all busy fighting their own battles and probably shanging directions quickly anyway.

TBH most of the people I've played with don't have too much trouble. I haven't had too many groups that've had trouble beating silver. I guess I've just been lucky.

I think its just one of those games where most of the teamwork can go unspoken.

This is actually a problem for PS3 when i do go up with random people. But I only get into matches that i am invited to, quick start never seems to work for me.

I guess I'm just really new to playing on-line and this silence is the norm. Other than playing co-op with one friend on Saints Row Third or playing co-op with a friend or two on Halo: Reach... I have honestly not played online on XBL. I am almost exclusively a single player RPG/sandbox gamer. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Saints Row, etc. Even on Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG I am not mic'ed though I try to chat messages when needed.

A significant portion of players actually may not speak English well enough to feel comfortable with a mic. We're not all American.

The only times I ever wish I'd attached my mic is when some idiot just refuses to get into the LZ 10 seconds before evac without any reason.
Apart from that, Bronze and Silver is doable without. Haven't tried Gold yet.

I guess I hadn't considered that aspect.  I was playing with someone the other day who was quite clearly Australian... and his gamer profile confirmed as much.  heh.

I play on xbox and don't use my mic since I don't like wearing it and tend to not like to talk to others and 9 times out of 10 we make it through the 11 waves without anyone talking at all.

My headset mic is broken, so I'm just using my regular headphones. I don't usually play silver or gold though. Only if there's not a bunch of low levels.

I don't mind people not using their mics. As long as they do what I tell them to do...

On bronze without mic it's easy, on silver if you're new to the silver then mic would be recommended. Asking for some tips from advanced players help in many decisions and the strategies together you can create are pretty awesome. On gold, it's a must. Krogan soldier and salarian infiltrator aim at same enemy on gold. 'Nuff said.

Haven't played Gold yet.  I'll keep that in mind.

Yeah, I regularly finish silver without a mic (as pretty much any class) as long as the group is decent and in the teens (though I've finished silver with three in the teens and a level 1.) Very rarely does anyone talk (half the time when someone does talk it's in a game I get disconnected from before it even starts. I'll have a loading screen, hear someone say hello, then get dropped from the game.) Last game I played I heard a lot of random noise through someone's mic, which was pretty freaking annoying (I imagine people would get annoyed listing to me watch TV while playing, too.)

Most of the time, though, I'm the only one who doesn't have a mic (I don't play multi-player games, generally, and I'm not buying a mic just to play ME. Besides, I hate voice chat.)

I'll probably skip gold, though (partly because I'm not that good, despite having an N7 rank of 108, and partly because I don't have a mic.)

This. I think that for most people, understanding English isn't really a problem. Speaking it, on the other hand... yeah. The one time I actually tried to talk a little, I was made fun of. That's not a very good incentive for using your mic.

By the way, does anyone know how/if we can change servers? I've tried changing the language and locale on my Xbox, but still ended up with US players.

This is the reason most people don't talk.

I have not used a mic yet(not done gold).....I guess its because the only experiences I have had with other players have been bad. Not always the case I guess, but this one dude kept ordering people to do things and the cursing and tutting when they didnt do what he asked......:-|

I went co-op'd with this guy once that played his rap music through his mic the whole entire game. It was annoying. I don't use mics and never will.

mic is not a necessary item in successfully completing the match, it would still be nice not to have an awkward silence and to not get one shotted by that phantom right behind me that my teammate was staring at for the past ten seconds while i was at work.

I have a mic on the 360 but choose not to use it.

Being from Scotland i know foreign people who speak English as a 2nd or 3rd language will struggle to understand me, plus once you understand what is needed for most of the "waves" "missions" in the game you dont really need to tell someone to cover you while you activate a relay or whatever, unless you really are not a team player and just play for yourself.

Also im guessing im older than most who are online playing it so not to interested in talking to someone potentially over half my age.

Thanks

My gaming headphones have no mic. I have a regular headset with a microphone, but its sound quality stinks so I don't usually use it. I guess I could hook up just the microphone from it and use my primary headphones, but I never bothered, thought it wasn't really necessary. I play mostly Bronze btw. Rarely Silver. Based on the responses in this thread, I'll probably consider the mic when I decide to tackle Gold.
