A significant portion of players actually may not speak English well enough to feel comfortable with a mic. We're not all American.
This. I think that for most people, understanding English isn't really a problem. Speaking it, on the other hand... yeah. The one time I actually tried to talk a little, I was made fun of. That's not a very good incentive for using your mic.
By the way, does anyone know how/if we can change servers? I've tried changing the language and locale on my Xbox, but still ended up with US players.
There is no way to force Xbox LIVE to only connect to local servers unfortunatly. LIVE should be setting you up with rooms that you are having the best connection with so I assume with the relitivly low numbers playing the demo consistantly which would explain why you are getting put into US rooms. Hopefully this will be better for you in the full game.
As for the OP I use my mic when there are others in the room with a mic, if not there is no point and I haven't really had too much trouble even on silver with groups not working together without mics.

OP, looks like you need to team up with some friends, instead of raging at people who might not even have a mic, like me. You know, not everyone is taking this co-op as serious as some kids with cod matches.. Some of us play for fun and still kicking ass.
I used to not have a mic, but then... you know the rest.
Seriously though, there is no reason not to have a mic if you are doing any time sensitive online gaming. You can literally go to a dollar store and buy one that, while may not be the greatest, is still servicable enough to scream PHANTOM into your team mates ears at a decibel level that will likely make that the last thing they ever hear.

I have a mic, but I sure as hell don't speak to randoms. I have no desire for it, if I play with randoms I just play for the pure lols and play the I feel like at that time. When I play with friends, I use mic and focus on working as a team with those people.
+1. I have little to no interest in talking to (or even listening to) randoms. My mic is for gaming with friends.

Would have no rpblem with it. Also most info is not needed. If people look and see you will not need it that often.

This game needs a button for facepalm pictures to show up for people so I can smack it before I leave to try and find something else less absurd.
...that said I've tried that a few times just to see them all die horribly. It can be amusing for a little bit.

I've been through so many matches that have made it to complete extraction without mics
In fact, the vast majority of the time people either don't have mics or have them but don't talk, and we still manage to work pretty damn well as a team.

My 'favorite' thing so far, is searching for games... and constantly finding some low N7 rank, **** with a lvl 1 character, another lvl 5 in the room - no mics, all trying to tackle Gold. Seriously? Gold...You guys want to try gold and you haven't even hit lvl 2 yet? Your still using Avenger I? Gold?

There is a glitch in the matchmaking system. If you search for bronze games you can STILL get dumped in gold/silver games and lobbies. Its happened to me.
Usually I point out they are in a Gold lobby and they leave:lol:

Honestly, I can cooperate fairly well without a mic. As long as most of the remainder of the team are vocal, I can do my part in providing support. However, with the degree of flak coming in from the last wave of Silver and Gold, my silence would be a real issue.
360 though I'm very vocal, and will speak with randoms if they instigate the communication. However, if they are being silent and won't even give a "hey" or whatever in the lobby or when boots touch down, then I'm not going to waste my breath.

Yes a mic helps, but good players also do the trick. When 2 people are on a Guardian you don't need a mic to tell the other one you're going to flank him so that he can be shot in the back, it should be a given to any player. Now I do admit that there were times when I wanted to warn someone that a Phantom was closing on him (but back to my previous point: a good player with good situation awareness also helps).
Lastly the MP part of this game needs a text chat window kinda like a MMO.

On the other hand? I don't want to hear you swearing. My children might be nearby.
I don't want to listen to two people spend all their time chatting instead of playing. You can use a phone for that.
I have no desire to listen to homophobic or racist slurs.

Beyond that, there is clearly a game play advantage at times.Last night a Phantom took me out in front of a turret. I knew my team mate would be running to res me (he did) and I knew he would die, too (he did). I had wanted to warn him. Plus, when you're in spectator mode, with a mic you can work the person you're watching if he's about to get flanked. There are definitely a lot of benefits to a mic

I tried to use my headset, but it's so frickin uncomfortable, I just can't wear it longer than a few minutes.
