Yeah...uh, more likely you were just shouting about the strategy that was already developing.

Truth is, the 'instinct strategy' that develops in decent co-op teams is more often than not entirely sufficient to carry the game provided the players are good enough.  Also, since most people are simply obnoxious with their mic, most people don't lisnte/mute their own mic -- as well as the channel for the speakers -- and only talk to friends.

Unfortunately, I have had way more negative experiences with mics than positive. Sure, in ME3's co-op it would be useful to chat and I've considered it a few times, but there's always that nagging memory of racists, idiots, and drunks. The overwhelming majority of XBox Live players are real ***holes and I want to enjoy my game, even if I get gunned down while trying to revive someone.

Welcome to Xbox live. I've played halo cod and bf and no one talks unless it's a bratty kid attempting to trash talk. Even in a game such as bf3 where teamwork and communication are essential. Xbox live is full of a bunch of no mic lone wolves and it shows in the demo for mass effect 3.

I actually can't get my in-game mic to work, I hold Tab or B but nobody can hear me... Skype works just fine though...

Things are not much different on the PC, hence the 'radio silence' for anyone but 'friends.'

Situational awareness > mic.

Don't need to hear some squeaky voiced mouth breather speaking to be good at a game.

This. I see in the options that the game is detecting my mic, but it's just not working.

The only time I've enjoyed hearing anyone on mic was when two of my squad were about to get stabbed by a phantom. I hear a third screaming "PHANTOM PHANTOM" I was in a convenient location to blast her to death. Next thing I hear from the same dude is "well Bobby's like **** it, I got this ****". That chuckle is about as far as I want to venture into mic work.

The microphone indicator doesn't work properly anyway. For me it always shows green no matter if my microphone is plugged in or not.
I was using simple headphone for a week and it was still showing green.

But i use one now and it was helpful to beat gold. We were just 2 people talking mostly to announce simple things, like a phantom or an atlas.

A lot of input and things I hadn't considered before. Thanks everyone. I guess my initial frustration stemmed mostly from my near total lack of XBL game play experience as the vast majority of my gaming is single-player RPGs (Bioware and Bethesda games mainly) and "sandbox" type games (big Saints Row fan but not for GTA oddly enough). I just assumed that the xbox came with a mic for a reason and that it should be used. The few times I have played online was co-op gaming with good friends in Halo: Reach and Saints Row Third off the top of my head.

Though I did just encounter one of those nightmare players who was mic'ed who I wish wasn't. This kid couldn't have been more than 10 and he was cussing like a Marine and truck driver combined and yelling at the rest of us to play better but when the match was over he was of course last in xp and no medals. We promptly booted him to say the least but we were having some fun with him calling him "cute" and "adorable" and giving him sarcastic and snarky replies to his insults. But still, he had to go. LOL!

My friend and I were playing Gold over the weekend on the PC version. We we're talking to each other using Skype, while being paired with 2 randoms. We managed to make it to wave 10 and the other 2 players were terrible. Constantly dying and used all their medigels before wave 3. Game seems to be fine when paired with silent players or bad ones at that. :P

And now you know OP, why no one uses mics in public MP games.

I barely know anyone that uses mics amongst my friends anyway, except my cousin who raids in WoW and uses it only for that gaming wise.

agreed. I hate playing with people who don't have mics. Not so much a problem on bronze, but for silver and up then yes I think they're needed.

It depends really, Bronze is simple enough, a microphone isn't necessary. Silver really depends on whether you know what to do and have the means to do so, whilst Gold, well...you probably will need one. Although it can get annoying when people don't have one, at the same time I prefer it when people don't.

I don't own a mic/headset for my Xbox because ME is the only game I own with multiplayer. It's kinda pointless to buy one, especially since I won't even be able to use MP after the demo until after I can scrape up the money to upgrade my Live account to Gold.

My laptop has a mic built in, but since it isn't spec'd to run anything more complicated or intensive than Photoshop, I don't play the demo on it much - especially not MP.

There's also the fact that I don't even like picking up the phone to talk to people I know. Using a mic is like picking up a phone and talking to someone I don't even know. It's very uncomfortable for me.

I'm also prone to bursting into song when bored. I don't think anybody wants to hear that between waves.

I have a problem that whenever my mic is on, the other players hear nothing but static or the echo. Even when I'm using headphones. I use push to talk, which works fine, but sometimes I catch myself talking without holding down the button for mic on. I don't have a problem working matches on radio silence, but I do think it's a bit easier when everyone communicates. Does it bother me when we don't? Nah.

I've been in games where both ends of the spectrum have occurred. I've had games with zero communication with players and we still worked very well together. Also I was in a group with three other guys and we all had great fun discussing the game and commenting on our awesome moments and mistakes (in equal measure) as well as providing good tactical communication. All-in-all I'd say it depends on both the difficulty and how the other players seem when I decide whether or not I'm going to communicate much during a match.

Also in response to some people's comments about their accents (either people being spooked by them or not liking them): I don't care where you're from or how you speak, we're all Mass Effect fans here. ;D

Well because of my hours I end up playing MP on US timezones when I'm English, and whenever I use a mic people ask if I'm from Russia or something because I have the strongest Leeds accent and dialect they've ever heard and can't understand me. This ends with them either ignoring me, mocking my accent/dialect or trying to understand me [Bless them] but just not being able to, so I tend not to use one, but hey, if anyone can understand me, feel free to drop a PM to go on Xbox Live with me with your GT and I'd be happy to work with people that don't mind my voice lol.

Trust me, when i call strategies, then it is because people have worse than no clue. Rather they seem to make a sport of who can go into the most retarded places at random times :D

But in 2 hours from now I'll be on the mp (demo) for the last time, cause I still have to do a full "perfect" playthrough in me1 and me2 to import into me3, so I'll try to talk this last time, try to improve my english for the final release.
I've reached the 100 friends limit on origin, so every person that tries to add me will have to wait until EA increase this limit. There is currently 3 people "waiting", it doesn't matter if I "accept", Origin will give an error message and they will stay there as "awaiting acceptance".

If someone wants to add me, feel free, DiegoProgMetal, same as here, but as I said I'm "limited" at the moment.

Ps.: One joke about my accent and I don't talk anymore. And try not to be "bossy". This is a game that is supposed to give us fun, not a real war. Ask for help, give good directions or advices are ok, but one "you retard, I told you to do that, but you didn't" and you're blocked from my list.

Brazilian accents are ****ing boss, who makes fun of them? Royce Gracie sounds cool as ffffu lol.

I sound like Sean Bean but a bit less...Sheffield-twangy.
